What the gurus are saying

This vitamin C serum with sodium ascorbyl phosphate earns praise for being gentle enough for acne-prone and oily skin. Gurus love how well it absorbs without irritation, and at around twenty dollars it's become one of Amazon's most-reviewed products. The catch is that it oxidizes readily, so you may want to replace it sooner to keep the serum potent.

"This is the bestselling vitamin C serum on Amazon and it's going to run you somewhere between 20 and 30 dollars, so another very budget friendly option. The form of vitamin C in here is sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is essentially a modified form of L-ascorbic acid. It may be less irritating for some people and it's been shown to have anti-acne effects. So if you're someone who breaks out with vitamin C, this derivative may be worth looking into. In addition to the vitamin C derivative, this also has some botanical ingredients, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. I actually liked using this product more than I expected to. I feel like this loses a point because it's in that dropper bottle, but because it's more affordable, I'm not as worried about knocking it into my sink. I think this is a really nice option for people who want a vitamin C that's not going to be too irritating. If they also understand that maybe it's not a vitamin C powerhouse, and I also think it's worth trying if you are acne prone or L-ascorbic acid formulations of vitamin C have broken you out in the past and you want to try an alternative."

"It's one of the most famous if not the most famous skincare product on Amazon. Super popular with amazing reviews and after using it myself I have to agree. I think it's just a good basic stellar vitamin C serum that you can use every day that will work great for helping to prevent those issues you're experiencing. This one primarily uses sodium ascorbyl phosphate but if you look at the reviews and see the before and afters and just the overall customer experience, it has a cult following, it's super popular and very effective. I think a great product that you can introduce into your daily skincare routine. Is it as elegant as the Beauty of Joseon serum? No. But it gets the job done and I would say the vitamin C in it is a little bit more powerful than what you would find in the Beauty of Joseon one."

"This TruSkin Vitamin C serum has ascorbic acid in it and hyaluronic acid. It was okay, it did oxidize pretty readily, and it's also got an ingredient that can help with healing and barrier recovery."
Yay
"I love this serum. It has sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is the best form of vitamin C for acne. Regular vitamin C can have magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or ascorbic acid, and those are great and very potent, but sodium ascorbyl phosphate is super stable and excellent for acne and oily-prone skin."

"The TruSkin Vitamin C serum, this has to have the most reviews I think I've ever seen on an Amazon product, look at this 108,000 reviews. This is so good for acne prone skin. I have used this for years. It has a specific form of vitamin C that is amazing for acne prone and oily skin. It has jojoba oil, it has hyaluronic acid, it has vitamin E. Amazing if you are oily and acne prone. One of the best and least expensive hyaluronic acid products. I can also buy it at Target but I spend like $30 at Target, it is $19.99 here. I'm restocking. I already know I love this one."
5 Best PIP/PIH Ingredients For Acne Hyperpigmentation & How They Work
"Vitamin C is wonderful for any dark marks that can be left behind on skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant meaning it fights against the free radical damage that comes at us from the sun and from the inflammation in our skin, but it also works against tyrosinase, the enzyme that tells our skin how much of the melanin, how much of the dark pigment to produce, and vitamin C can really help with this as well as boost up your sunscreen. Vitamin C is fantastic because it literally stops the skin from being able to create that pigment in the first place and is known to be very, very brightening."

"One of my favorites that I can't show you right now because my skincare routine was stolen when my car window was smashed is the True Skin vitamin C serum. It's about 20 dollars at Target and it's so good. It has vitamin C and antioxidants, and it also has hyaluronic acid. It's perfect for those who have oily-prone skin, really inexpensive and really effective."

"This is wonderful. This is from True Skin and has vitamin C in the form of sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is better for those who are breakout prone, and it's also got vitamin E and hyaluronic acid. So this has that combination of C and E in it. This is inexpensive—it's like twenty bucks at Target. I get it on Amazon and it has over a hundred thousand reviews. While I think this one is great for anybody who is breakout prone, it is super easy to use, it's non-irritating, and it absorbs really well into skin."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
