What the gurus are saying

This balm stands out for rinsing cleaner than most with less tugging, and unusually contains lactic and azelaic acids at this price point. The scent earns praise and it pairs well with retinoids. However, reactions are mixed: one early enthusiast later declined to repurchase, and another cautions that ginger may irritate sensitive skin, so those concerned may want to patch-test or stick with turmeric alone.

"This is their ginger and turmeric cleansing balm. This one will not be a repurchase for me. The amount of essential oils in this is a little bit too much and it doesn't quite emulsify enough for my particular..."

"Their Ginger Turmeric Cleansing Balm smells absolutely divine. It melts away all your makeup. [...] This one rinses a little bit more cleanly than other cleansing balms I've tried. I like this one a lot better. I don't have to do quite so much tugging in the evening to get this off. It just kind of rinses clean and gives me a little bit of hydration so that I can move in with my retinoid product and continue on with my skincare."

"My evening skincare routine includes a new brand that I've just discovered, True Botanicals. I've tried multiple of their products but my two favorites are their Ginger Turmeric Cleansing Balm, which smells absolutely divine. It melts away all your makeup. It reminds me of the Eve Lom, that's one of Wayne Goss's favorite cleansing balm, but this one rinses a little bit more cleanly. I like this one a lot better. I don't have to do quite so much tugging in the evening to get this off. It just kind of rinses clean, gives me a little bit of hydration so that I can move in with my retinoid product and continue on with my skincare."

"I absolutely adore pretty much everything that these guys create and this balm is no exception but she's pricey. It's just so slippery and it smells divine and it's experiential. This is like a moment. I love cleaning my face with this product and your skin is so so soft even after the first cleanse. This stuff is like butter. I haven't repurchased it because it's hard for me to get in Europe. It's one of the things that I need to get when I'm back in the US because I have to import it and it's just so expensive but I love it."

"Their Ginger and turmeric cleansing balm, I think it's called."

"This is a nice oil cleanser for 48 dollars. I would normally say get a cheaper oil cleanser for the same amount of money, but this does have lactic and azelaic which you couldn't really get in a lot of others, so I do feel like this is unique. It does have a base of sunflower seed oil and vegetable oil, avocado, jojoba. However, I would be worried for people who are super sensitive because ginger can be irritating to the skin. I would personally just stick with the turmeric. The brand does do this clean beauty marketing that I don't love, but the products themselves I don't hate."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid has clinical evidence for both acne and rosacea, and it is one of the gentler options for calming redness while also working on marks left behind.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
