What the gurus are saying

This balm earns consistent praise for its rich hydration and versatility across multiple applications: moisturiser, sleeping mask, or rinse-off mask. Gurus highlight the well-researched ingredient mix (colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, and Centella asiatica) as particularly effective for eczema and severely dry skin, with one noting that a little goes a long way and it shines best in nighttime routines. The main trade-off is the price point, though one reviewer noted the formula was better before the addition of fragrance.

Best Healing, Nourishing, Repairing & Soothing Skincare Products for Irritated, Damaged, or Dry Skin
"It's meant to be a moisturizer but you can use it as a sleeping mask or rinse off mask or moisturizer. It's really got some good ingredients in here. It's pretty affordable. We've got H squalane, we've got shea butter, green tea, turmeric, ceramides, and then several amino acids that are nicely hydrating. I typically use this one either as a sleeping mask or as a rinse off mask. I don't really use it as a moisturizer. I did a little bit last winter, I'll say that, so it's been a while since I've used it as a moisturizer, but as a sleeping mask or anything like that it's really nice. So it's worth checking out."

"I love the Topicals Like Butter. Really nice multi-functional product, you can use as a mask, a moisturizer, a sleeping cream, last step product. Very nice hydrating, calming, very nice on skin."
Best Thick Moisturizers & Night Time Sleeping Masks - Favorite Overnight Facial Creams
"I've got the Topicals Like Butter. It's got green tea, metal cassia, turmeric, rhubarb, and ginseng. I use it in a variety of different ways. Some nights I'll use it as a leave-on mask at the end of my routine, I'll apply this and rinse it off the next morning. Sometimes I will apply it like a moisturizer when my skin's feeling dry or super sensitive. And sometimes I apply it like a traditional mask and then rinse it off in the shower after it sits on my skin for 20 or 30 minutes, or sometimes you can just use it as a mask and then blot it off. This stuff is really lovely. It does get very hydrating, so I don't necessarily find it's great during the daytime per se, but in the nighttime it has so many great benefits for your skin and it's really lovely. A little bit of it goes a very, very long way."

Top 50 Best Skincare Products of 2023 💖✔ Part Two - My Favorite Skincare Products of the Year!
"I really like they're faded until they change the formula and added fragrance to it. I really loved it before then but I didn't love it otherwise. If they hadn't changed it probably would still be on this list. But that being said, Topicals Like Butter is wonderful. You can use it as a moisturizer, a rinse off mask, or a sleeping mask. It's got green tea, metal case side, turmeric, rhubarb, ginseng. It's amazing, it's pretty affordable, and I love the fact that it's got multiple uses so it makes it a winner instantly because I like things that you can use for different purposes or different ways or things like that."

"It's the Topicals Like Butter. They claim that this product is either a mask or a moisturizer, but I would definitely say it's going to give you a lot more benefit to use it as a daily moisturizer. It's also one of the highest rated products that I've ever seen on Sephora. People love this and I fully understand why. It's an amazing rich moisturizer that helps to treat eczema and severely dry skin using a combination of really well-researched ingredients for eczema like colloidal oatmeal and ceramides, but it also has great natural extracts like ginseng extract, green tea, shea butter, and Centella asiatica, one of the best ingredients for reducing redness and helping to heal the skin. Even before I bought it, when I looked at the ingredient list I was like, ooh, I know I'm going to love this one. There's a reason behind the hype; this one is a great product. The only downside is that it is on the pricier side, so if that is a factor for you, I would say other products are definitely going to be a better match. However, the formula and experience of this product are really, really impressive."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.
