What the gurus are saying

This concealer earns praise for its creamy, malleable texture that blends beautifully and works particularly well on mature skin when applied with the right technique and skin prep. Its staying power over powder makes it a standout for bridal work. One thing to keep in mind: the formula can feel dry or settle into lines if you use too much or skip proper hydration underneath, so starting with less and building coverage tends to work better than loading it on at first application.

"Too Faced has a good concealer. It is the radiant one. What is it called? The Too Faced Born This Way Concealer. I think there's only one formulation and there might be two formulations in the foundation."

"It's too light. Because you put something too light on top of something too dark, it's going to turn gray. So now we have a grayness around the eye and the grayness around the lip. What I would do in this situation is use the color corrector also, but just get a concealer that is your skin tone or even a tiny bit of foundation. And then that lightening concealer. Tap a tiny bit here and a tiny bit here. Not over the whole face because you're going to get ashy."

"One thing that is really nice about that concealer is that not only is it higher coverage, but you also get a lot of product in that container, so that's another one of those possibly more budget friendly options."

"Born This Way Concealer from Too Faced because it is so malleable you can shear it out beautifully when you mix in your own like other emollients. It's honestly great on mature skin if you're [...] in the right hands with the right touch, mature skin loves it. It's one of the only products on the market that you can apply over a powdered face and do touch-ups, so for bridal it's truly iconic."

"I'm using my Too Faced Born This Way Concealer in butterscotch and basically you just want to mimic or recreate what your face looks like when light is hitting it head on. So your forehead, underneath your eyes, your chin, these are areas that are naturally lighter on the face, so you use a concealer that is one shade lighter at this stage to highlight."

"It feels really nice and creamy and hydrating, which I feel like a lot of people love for their under eye concealer. [...] It seems like a bottle that you'll never finish, which is good and bad. [...] It's really really popular, not just amongst like Ulta shoppers but just people in general. [...] To me it kind of reminds me of like a more hydrating Shape Tape."

"The first time I used it in my late 20s, I [...] thought this is really dry, like this doesn't feel good, this does accentuate my lines. [...] It wasn't until later on, because I would continue buying it, that [...] at some point it clicked for me. It was one of those products where I had to use it [...] several times over the span of a couple of years for it to click for me. [...] I think it's because [...] you have to use the right amount and you have to have the right skin prep, and if you do, it is the best concealer to work with as a non-pro and probably for a pro. It's one of my favorites. It gives a proper amount of coverage, I don't need a lot of it, and it never looks dry and creasy on me."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
