What the gurus are saying

Gurus split on whether this creates visible plumping: some report it helps with under-eye hollowness and fine lines, while others saw no change after weeks of use. The clinical trials backing the active ingredient aren't particularly strong, though the very affordable price makes it low-risk to try. Some gurus experienced warmth and irritation that built with extended use, so patch-test first.

"I have reviewed the volume filling serum from The Ordinary, and it's not going to bring back lost volume in the face. The study behind it was bogus, done on women's breasts showing an increase in size, so they never actually showed any kind of fat restoration at all. Topicals just aren't going to correct that kind of volume loss."

Facial Volume Loss: Can The Ordinary Volufiline Really Help?
"Volufiline is an interesting ingredient with some intriguing preliminary studies behind it, but very limited to questionable clinical evidence that it does anything, especially for facial use. I remain skeptical that this product penetrates deep enough, safely stimulates fat cell differentiation or provides any sort of lasting volume restoration. If you enjoy the temporary plumping sensation and tolerate the discomfort, the warmth, and it doesn't irritate your skin, then it might be fine for you to use. Personally, I really wish that they would get rid of the volufiline, which I assume is what leads to the warmth, the swelling, the sensation, and just put in maybe the pal-isoleucine making it this emollient moisturizer because it's almost like mineral oil for the skin but a different substance and I really like that because it is moisturizing. I would prefer this product if it felt and looked exactly the same but did not generate the warmth, the swelling."

"I did a video sharing how I was prepping my under eye for concealer using Volufiline. This is by The Ordinary. It is supposed to be a plumping product, but I gave it a try as an under eye concealer prep, and I have been able to use all the concealers that typically crease in my under eye, and they last throughout the day with minimal to no creasing. You don't need a lot of this. The applicator is slightly tricky and definitely dispenses too much product, so give it a half pump. I put it on the back of my hand, just a half pump, and apply a very small amount in the outside and inside corner, and then I tap tap tap it in. If I warm this up with my finger and apply the Volufiline before the concealer, it brightens and it doesn't crease. This tip has actually turned this into one of my favorite concealers."

"The Ordinary launched this product called Volufiline 92% and Pal-Isoleucine 1%, and this is the name that shows up on the bottle. There is data, but very limited and questionable. The best one we have is from the actual manufacturer. They looked at this product specifically, it's a 5% Volufiline cream on 28-year-old women applying it to breast tissue. They used it for about 50 plus days and the average result was a 2.2% increase in breast volume with some good responders seeing maybe 8%. Again, very small. It was not a peer-reviewed study. When it's made by the manufacturer, you don't really often have access to how the study was set up, did these patients do anything else like actual breast surgery during the study, did they use anything else. We don't know, but they applied this cream and there was this improvement."

"The Ordinary Volufiline is well studied and there's lots of data to show it can help increase density and volume in the skin over time. Not groundbreaking. These studies showed roughly a 2.7% increase, but that's something. And it will instantly hydrate and nourish the skin, too. So you get that instant hydration, that nice plumping effect the second you use it. And in the long term, you are going to get some marginal improvements in terms of volume and density in the skin. I really do love it, but I think how you use it is key."

$40 ANTI AGING MIRACLE TRIO - 4x Firmer Skin (The Ordinary Anti Aging)
"You can use it in the hollows of the cheeks to help boost some fullness into the skin, and under the eyes to smooth things out and take away some of the crepiness. You're not going to get filler-like results, but over a period of 6 to 8 weeks you'll definitely see some of that fullness return, some of that plumpness, that juiciness that we can lose as we age. I've been using it ahead of the launch and I've been really impressed. I think it gives immediate hydration. It definitely plumps and I'm really confident that in the long term I'm going to start seeing some results when it comes to maintaining that fullness in the skin."
The FUTURE OF ANTI AGING - Ultimate Skincare Routine 2025
"This is the Ordinary Volufiline 92%. A lot of people refer to this as filler in a bottle, which I don't think technically it is, but it is a great option when it comes to plumping and increasing volume in the skin."
$20 BOTOX IN A BOTTLE DUO - 3X Better Anti Aging
"The volume feline actually targets lost fat deposits in the skin. As we age, the volume, the fat retention in the skin does diminish and volume feline can help correct and reverse some of that. It instantly plumps and hydrates, but in the long term, it has some really great benefits for promoting fat restoration, which will just give us that long-term voluminous, fresh, plump skin that we all secretly crave."
I Stopped Tretinoin - The Results Blew Me Away ( BEST ANTI AGING SERUMS )
"This launched about a year ago and took the world by storm. It is a tricky product to use. Everyone went mad for it when it launched and then realized actually it's really tricky to incorporate. How I actually use this is on the lip. I love this. I put a little bit on the lips, plumps out, reduces those fine lines and wrinkles. In the long term, it'll definitely help restore loss volume in that area, but in the short term, it also plumps out. Put a lip balm on top of it. Done. Easy, quick win. You can use this all over the face. You can use it strategically where you want extra volume and plumpness. It's up to you. But as a bare minimum, just slap some of this on the lips and it'll get your pout on point. It's really inexpensive. It works. I find it a little bit too faffy and difficult to incorporate to really want to use it all over the face anymore."
Truth About THE ORDINARY VOLUFILINE SERUM - Filler In A Bottle Scam
"Over three and a half months, I've definitely seen more consistent plumping. It's not just an instant fix, but something that in the long term has delivered some benefits. I found that where I had some hollowness in skin under the eye and in the contours of the cheeks, that is less noticeable than it used to be. It's not groundbreaking. I've heard people refer to this as filler in a bottle, but I think that's very misleading. You're not going to get filler-like results, but it is noticeable to the naked eye. I like the instant hydration and the instant plumping. After that three and a half month point, I've definitely seen some long-term results, which makes me want to continue to use it. I haven't been wowed or blown away with the outcomes, but I've been impressed enough to want to continue to invest my own coin and buy it time and time again. The couple of things I will call out: it can be a little tricky in terms of application. It does have a slightly oily, greasy feel to it, which if you use it just neat on the skin, can almost leave behind a little greasiness, which wasn't the nicest feel. What I've taken to doing is mixing a few drops of it in with my favorite moisturizer, then applying it where I want it to be. This gives the best application, helps it to absorb a bit quicker, and you don't get that greasy after effect."
Miracle $15 Skin Plumping Serum - THE FUTURE OF ANTI AGING
"Lots of people have been able to try this product out prior to the launch and are reporting that it's delivering some really great results in terms of plumping, in terms of smoothing. If you go on to the Ordinary website, they also do have some self-uploaded before and after pictures of people that have been trying this out and you can definitely notice a difference. I used it and I definitely saw some immediate plumping and some immediate hydration. I haven't used it long enough to say whether it has long-term benefits, but if you look at other people's experiences, it definitely seems to be delivering something. There are a few studies into Volufiline, which are worth looking at. One actually looked at the application into breast tissue. So, over a period of two months, someone applied Volufiline to one breast and not to the other. They then measured fat density after that two-month period and found that there was a 2.5% increase in fat density in the area that had been treated. Now, that's not groundbreaking. 2.5% isn't like transformative, but it is kind of significant. And I think this is what we're saying is whilst there isn't a whole suite of evidence, there's definitely something there to say this is doing more than just a placebo. It's worth bearing in mind that obviously that is one study. It's done to breast tissue rather than facial tissue. It's not exactly a like for like crossover, but there's definitely some proof that this ingredient does lead to lipid retention and a boost to fat deposits in the areas you treat it. And so it could genuinely be beneficial. And it's not invasive. You know, it's not expensive. It's not invasive."

Major Update: THE ORDINARY VOLUFILINE ( Why I Quit Filler In A Bottle )
"I tried it literally on day one of that launch and I think it's fair to say I fell in love from day one. This is a product that gives some really great instant results in terms of plumping and hydration. You see that from the first application. After about 3 months, I started to notice that my skin was just that little bit plumper naturally before I'd even actually applied this product. And I think that's really important because quick wins are amazing, but long-term payoff is what we're really in for when it comes to skin care. And this definitely did have a long-term plumping benefit. Particularly if you apply strategically, say like the hollows of the cheeks and areas where you do have some loss of volume. I think this does make a noticeable difference. Is it the same as filler in a bottle? Absolutely not. Some nice plumping action, absolutely. Hydration comes through in bucket loads. But I think a product topically applied like this is never going to match injectable treatments like filler. It's just a different category of product. We should set our expectations accordingly. And we're at the six month point. I just wanted to kind of come full circle and say that whilst I still think this is an absolute phenomenal product, there are some things which mean I reach for it less frequently than maybe I expected to at this point."

"I don't think volume is the end all be all ingredient that some people think it is, but for some people maybe it's me. Had some really amazing results, but for me now, this is my third volume product and out of all three of them, none of them have been overly impressive to me. Nothing has revealed like amazing results that you hear about. Some people get amazing results. Some people, like me, don't notice much either way. But I haven't I don't think I've done a full review of it yet. Still need to keep testing it out."

"It helps with plumping skin and encourages fat cells to store more lipids, which leads to a temporary increase in subcutaneous volume. I will say if you look at Reddit, it is littered with photos of people saying, 'Wow, this is amazing.' They're applying it directly to their skin and getting amazing results. This is my third product now with Volifaline, and I have yet to be knocked over by it. I just haven't found it to be impressive. I just found it to be nice and hydrating, I guess."
Volufiline - The Ordinary New Volufiline Serum - Is It A Skin Plumping Miracle Worker & Worth Trying
"I will say I've tested this. I personally didn't have any positive results. I didn't have any negative results either, but I didn't notice any effect after testing this for a couple of months in very small amounts around my mouth area. I didn't notice any benefits. Some people say they notice the most amazing benefits and so this was studied. It's a controversial ingredient, a combination of hydrogenated polyisobutene and a plant extract founded by a French company called Restorsea. It's got a plant-based extract and it helps when you apply it with the formation of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Some people will say, look at these pictures, I used it around my mouth area and in a couple days my mouth area already looks much more plump, and things like that. I'm very wary of anything that says within a couple days you can get noticeable results, especially when with this product you would think using it you'd get noticeable results perhaps in a couple of months. Most topical products cannot give you dramatic results in two days."
New Skincare 🆕The Ordinary Volufiline, Good Molecules Azelaic Acid & Moisturizer - First Impressions
"Some people are big believers in volufiline. It's kind of a patented ingredient. Some people will apply this and they will say the next day, 'Wow, I got so much volume.' I tested one out for months and I never noticed anything after months and some people use it for like a day and be like, 'Wow.' But the texture of it is actually better than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be really greasy and oily and it really just absorbed quickly. The texture was a lot less greasy than I thought. I'm not super impressed. I will be amazed if it delivers results, but I'm not expecting anything, but you never know."

"The ordinary just released their volualign serum."

"I want to give a little shout out here to Volufiline. The Ordinary just came out with a Volufiline product, which is essentially a molecule that has been shown to increase fat cell growth in the skin. If you have hollow under eyes or the fat pads under your eyes are shrinking down, doing anything to add fat or volume back to that area would be amazing. Now the clinical trials around Volufiline are not super impressive, but it's a very affordable product. I think there's very little harm in trying it, and I would probably use something like this for at least six to nine months before I really had a good understanding of whether it was benefiting me. This is a very concentrated serum, so you don't put it directly on dry skin. You can either mix it with your moisturizer or apply it on top of your moisturizer. The way I would recommend using it if you're Volufiline curious is to apply your normal eye cream and then put a little drop of Volufiline right on top."

"This is a product that you spot treat in those areas where you need more volume. They say this is filler in a bottle. It's not filler in a bottle. It does not work like filler, but eventually it can help to plump up the skin, I suppose, in those areas. I really didn't have a good experience with this. [...] I am no longer using this underneath my eyes, which was the area that I was using this consistently. [...] For my under eyes, it was a no-go. I really did not like my experience, especially towards the end of the 14th week. I don't know how to rate this to be honest with you. I need to almost use this again on my lips to give a better rating. For right now, I'm going to say this is a 6 out of 10. I might change my mind once I try this more with my lips, but for now, 6 out of 10."

I USED THE ORDINARY VOLUFILINE 92% + PAL-ISOLEUCINE 1% FOR 16 WEEKS - HONEST REVIEW & NOT SPONSORED!
"After 16 weeks of use, I took two weeks off and my under eyes went back to normal. They're no longer puffy or inflamed. I didn't like the way my skin looked or felt using this, so I'm not going to continue with it. [...] I wouldn't hate the product. I think it can be possibly beneficial for someone. It really is hydrating, and I really love the texture of it. But I honestly didn't think that after 14 weeks of using this I was going to experience some type of irritation."
THE ORDINARY'S MOST UNEXPECTED LAUNCH YET! THE ORDINARY VOLUFILINE 92% + PAL-ISOLEUCINE 1% REVIEW
"Isolucine is an ingredient that can help with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and skin elasticity. [...] I like this product. I feel like it has potential. [...] It's going to be a serum that is going to perform differently on everybody. For me personally, I don't have a lot of hollowness with my skin. [...] I am 38 years old, so in fairness, this probably isn't something that would benefit me fully for that full volume plumping effect. But I think it's a really nice product to try to see if it would be something that could give you some more fullness in time. [...] I do have a little bit of volume loss in the under-eye area. Is it something that I'm really going to benefit from? Probably not right now. I think it's a good product to possibly use as a preventative to build up the volume, but if you really don't have a lot of volume loss right now, I just don't know if this is something that would be necessary to have."
I USED THE ORDINARY VOLUFILINE 92% + PAL ISOLEUCINE 1% ON MY LIPS FOR 4 MONTHS - BEFORE & AFTER'S
"I've been using this on my lips for over four months. When I first started I used it on clean dry lips with no lip balm underneath, and it was hydrating, kept my lips comfortable, and did not dry them out. I didn't feel any tingling or warming sensation on my lips at all, even after two to three weeks, unlike my experience using this underneath my eyes. Later I started applying it on top of lip balm and it layered nicely with no different sensation, so it works well with or without balm underneath. Over the four months it has plumped my lips and increased volume. It's not crazy volume, but I feel like if I keep using it longer it might plump my lips more, and the results last, they're not temporary like an initial hydration plump. Comparing my before and after photos, there is a slight difference in fullness and plumpness, which is small but gives me hope to continue. It did take time, and I didn't really notice the result until closer to the four month mark. It's a 15 mil size that retails around $30 Canadian, and I've barely put a dent in it after four months of use on my lips, so it could last twelve months or longer since you don't need much and it spreads thin. I will admit I was pretty skeptical before, especially after my under eye experience, but for my lips this is working pretty good and I would love to have fuller, more volume, plumper lips, so I'm going to continue using it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
