    What the gurus are saying

This pure squalane earns consistent praise for trapping water in the skin and creating a protective layer that feels more hydrated the next day, making it especially valued during winter or by those with dry and compromised skin. The texture is rich and nourishing yet applies with enough slip to blend smoothly when mixed in the palm, and gurus suggest using just two to three drops to keep it breathable. Those already using hydrating actives like hyaluronic acid find squalane layers beautifully on top and works best when mixed rather than applied in separate layers.

"Squalane is skin identical, lightweight, non-occlusive, non-comedogenic. It's one of the safest moisturizing options during a perioral dermatitis flare. The Ordinary makes excellent squalane products at different price points."

"I absolutely love it. It's in my opinion like the best natural oil that you can find for really deeply nourishing the skin. It's why I use the ingredient in my own products in my skincare brand. There are so many different benefits for reducing flakiness, dehydration, preventing transepidermal water loss. Like it is such an incredible ingredient and very rarely am I a person to recommend like a 100% ingredient because I do feel like the majority of skincare products can really benefit from the blend rather than a single ingredient. But squalane is one of those, especially if you have more dry skin, that can totally be beneficial. And you can't beat the price point that The Ordinary provides. So, I think it's a great addition to the routine. Does it necessarily substitute a moisturizer? No. However, great addition. It doesn't like come off on clothes. It soaks in so well. It's so slick. It's so hydrating."

"The Ordinary Squalane, which is fragrance-free. I like it as a pre-wash oil. You need a light, scalp safe, fragrance-free oil that prevents the water from overswelling the strand. Apply this for about 10 minutes before your wash."

"Squalane or marula oil, both of which you can buy from The Ordinary, they're not that expensive and it's just a great last step your skin will thank you the following day."

"100% squalane to use on top at night is also going to help to trap fats so basically almost create a second layer of skin and trap water in the skin and allow the skin to feel more hydrated the next day."

"I actually find some of the derivatives kind of work better with acne in my experience than ascorbic acid and they definitely won't make your skin dull. So I use the Squalane Tetraisopalmitate solution from The Ordinary which is one of my absolute favorites that works amazingly with acne because it kind of hydrates with a bit of an oil base but won't clog the pores or exacerbate your acne."

"The Ordinary makes a really inexpensive squalane oil. A couple drops of that, a couple drops of your castor oil, and then put it on your rough and bumpy bits."

Should You Change Your FALL & WINTER ANTI-AGING SKINCARE ROUTINE?
"My budget pick is the Squalane, 100% squalane from The Ordinary. It seals in the deal, very lightweight but great for either oily skin types if you put a very small amount on and all the way to super dry skin. If you have normal to oily skin you may want to skip the facial oil step but I honestly argue that a light facial oil can't hurt every skin type especially in the cooler months."

"Squalane is great for skin hair and nails. I have been using this for my cuticles helping repair dry skin around my cuticles. A few drops in the evening for a really really affordable facial oil. Facial oils can be very expensive but honestly a little squalane at the end of your evening skincare routine is perfect. I'm going to start wearing this over my sunscreen because it's been very windy and cold here and I feel like I was going to put Vaseline on my skin but I thought, you know what, I'm just going to use a facial oil and put a little bit of this over my sunscreen when I go out in the morning to kind of prevent that wind burn that I've been getting."

"This has never been out of my skincare routine. [...] I tried to not buy it, I tried to use something else in its place, and [...] it only lasted about three days and I put my order in. The Ordinary Squalane is quickly becoming a top favorite, like holy grail type of product for me. I've been using this oil over the last couple of years [...] and this is my favorite blend especially for winter time. It's very nourishing, it is comforting, it's soothing, it is skin barrier strengthening and super duper affordable."

"I have mad respect for this product. It's probably one of my favorite products from Deciem because I do find their products to be on the gentler side, but there is something about this one that is very robust, very effective, and works very fast. I've been using this since 2018. There's not much I can say. It's definitely an 11 out of 10."

"I like the Squalane from The Ordinary. I find it's a great cleanser and it doesn't overly dry the skin. Essentially I see it as an oil-based cleanser and it achieves everything it sets out to achieve without overly drying the skin. It's a great one for the nighttime particularly if you're doing things like slugging or doing our gloss skin protocol."

"I like to use a squalane product which essentially is the emollient and why do I use squalane because it is probably the best emollient available. It replicates our natural emollient produced by the oil in the body. [...] I put that on top of the hyaluronic acid and I found that it's an excellent hydration and very consistently so as well. [...] The Ordinary actually have a great product, the squalane cleanser which is great for compromised skin, so if you [...] have really dehydrated skin, maybe like psoriasis eczema, squalane cleanser is actually quite a good product."

"The B oil is also really good. The Ordinary's B oil is fantastic. I am stocking up on it. If you're looking for a great oil that actually supports skin, that nourishes and really invigorates, as well as smoothing over those dead keratinocytes, the B oil is the babe. If you're doing the retinoid oil at night and the B oil during the day, especially for winter for those of us who are getting little dry patches, if you're not extremely oily, this one's a winner."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
