What they liked

  • Lightweight, non-sticky texture
  • Reduces redness and smooths texture
  • Absorbs quickly without a film

What they flagged

  • Not hydrating enough on its own in winter

What the gurus are saying

This emulsion earns consistent praise for delivering real hydration in a texture that feels weightless and spreads easily, making it especially valuable for anyone who wants ectoin's barrier-support benefits without a thick cream. Gurus found it calms redness, smooths texture, and suits oily and acne-prone skin well. The main caveat is seasonality: it shines as a standalone moisturizer in warmer months, but many may want to layer a richer cream on top come winter to lock in enough moisture for colder weather.

"They consider this an ultra lightweight moisturizer, and I have to agree, this actually performs very well as a moisturizer. I've been using this a lot in my morning routine this summer because it's been so hot and humid and I really haven't been wanting to put too much on my skin because I worry about breaking out. This has been one of my go-tos in replacement of a traditional cream moisturizer, and it's been performing really nicely. It's not heavy, doesn't make your skin greasy or shiny, and sits well underneath sunscreen, tinted sunscreen, as well as foundation and makeup. No peeling. This is also great for reducing the look of facial redness, it helps to calm and soothe the skin, it hydrates the skin as well, and it maintains that healthy skin barrier with the ectoin, the rice lipids, and the moisturizing factors. There's also jojoba oil in here. Not greasy, oily, and it's not heavy at all. Perfect for all skin types. You can use this as your moisturizer replacement or if you need more moisture, use this after your serums but before your traditional moisturizer. This performs really well if you need that extra moisture. It's fabulous, fragrance-free, and very thin. This is probably one of my top favorites and one of the best products that the brand has launched yet."
Top Pick: lightweight moisturizer

THE ORDINARY & NIOD APRIL SALE 2026 | TOP 18 ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS + THE PRODUCTS THAT ALWAYS SELL OUT
"I really like how lightweight it is and it actually sits really nicely underneath sunscreen and makeup. It actually shines through your makeup, giving a little bit more of that youthful glow, but again, not greasy and not super shiny. It just gives that perfect healthy glow to the skin. If you're looking for something that is really lightweight but rich, this is one to look into for sure. Right now with it still being cold outside, this isn't enough moisture for me personally to replace my moisturizer with. But come late spring and then summer, this actually might be a great replacement for me for moisturizer because I'm acne prone and I don't like using things that are too heavy on the skin come the summer."
10 NEW ORDINARY PRODUCTS RANKED - SOME ACTUALLY SURPRISED ME | NEWEST LAUNCHES EXPLAINED & REVIEWED
"I've been using this after my serums, but before the application of a thicker moisturizer, and my skin has been loving it. It really helps to repair the skin. It deeply hydrates the skin. It helps with texture. It really helps to reduce the look of facial redness. This is amazing. [...] It's very lightweight. It's not sticky. This doesn't break me out. [...] This is good for acne prone skin as well, oily skin. [...] If you're using serums and products beforehand, you need less drops of this because it just spreads across the skin a little bit better. But if you're just using this on its own right after cleansing, you might need to be more generous with the amount that you apply. This is exceptional. This is 10 out of 10."
THE ORDINARY RICE LIPIDS + ECTOIN REVIEW | I TESTED THIS FOR 3 WEEKS AND HERE'S THE TRUTH!
"This on its own actually was quite nice, but it's not enough for me, especially during the winter months. I could see this being suited best used on its own come spring and definitely summer. But I wouldn't just use this on its own. [...] This actually might be a great product to resort to for that lightweight moisturizer during the summer months, but for the winter, in my opinion, it's just not enough. [...] I would rather put a thicker moisturizer on top of this to lock in the moisture from this, provide my skin with more moisture, and when I do that, my skin just feels so much better. [...] Rice lipids helps to retain skin hydration. It really helps to prevent transepidermal water loss. So it helps to keep that skin nice and plump in those deeper layers. Ectoin helps to smooth out the skin. So if you have any type of texture, I feel like ectoin can do a really good job to wipe that out, giving that softer, smoother look and feel to the skin. Jojoba oil is going to nourish the skin and the natural moisturizing factors in here will help to maintain skin hydration."

"This is the perfect moisturizer option for people that have very oily skin. If you have oily skin like me, this is your moisturizer and you won't need anything else. If you have a more dryness prone skin type, you can use this almost like as a prehydrator. Put this on before your other moisturizer to just get some additional benefit. This is really lightweight and I think if you don't need a real depth of hydration, this is a phenomenal one to go for because it's actually in serum form. It actually delivers a meaningful level of hydration without weighing the skin down. This is going to be my summer go-to because it's so lightweight, breathable. Your skin can breathe through this, which is really important in those warmer months. The rice lipids are fantastic for the hydration. The ectoin is going to boost the barrier function of the skin, help heal the skin. If you maybe have had a little too much sun or maybe you've overdone it with an active, that's going to help with that heal process. Just a really, really nice moisturizer. And again, super inexpensive and affordable."

2026 BEST SKINCARE - 5 Game Changing Serums Everyone Should Try
"This is The Ordinary Rice Lipids + Ectoin Micro Emulsion. When they announced this as a launch, I was prepared to be underwhelmed because I thought, what are we really trying to achieve here? They badge it as a moisturizer in serum form, and I've been duped by promises made by brands of these hydrating serums that never really deliver. This one does. Genuinely as powerful as a moisturizer in the most impossibly lightweight formula that just delivers you that boost to hydration that we need, but also helps restore the skin barrier function. Ectoin is one of the hottest ingredients in skincare right now and lots of the time you have to pay upwards of $70 to be able to access it. Not with this. You get a good amount of product at a really affordable price and ectoin is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in this. The reason I say this is a game changer is as an oily skinned person I never felt there was a moisturizer out there that actually catered for what I needed: hydration, invisibility and weightless finish on the skin. It just didn't exist until this came into the market. Now, if you're somebody that has more dryness prone skin type, maybe this isn't going to be for you. If you're oily and you just need that hydration with no weight, this is what I mean by game changing. This has completely transformed the way that I view moisturizing, how I do so in my own skincare routine, all down to this product. You get 60ml and I think I paid about something like £13 for it. They actually have a sale on at the moment: 23% off this and everything else in the collection."
GREATEST SKINCARE PRODUCTS 2026 - Skincare Awards 2026 (Summer Edition)
"This is The Ordinary Rice Lipids + Ectoin Micro Emulsion. I just love this. This is my summer go-to moisturizer because I am very oily and I'm acne prone. And in summer, I need hydration, but I don't want weight. Most moisturizers just weigh me down. Do you ever get that sensation that you just can't sweat through your moisturizer? It's almost like blocking everything. I hate that. This is breathable, lightweight, but actually delivers a gorgeous dose of hydration. It's actually a serum moisturizer hybrid. You put it on the skin and you think, 'I'm not sure that it's almost too light to really be doing anything.' And then you realize, no, my skin is plump, it's hydrated, it doesn't feel tight or dry, but I can't feel anything on it. That's why this is a must-have for any oily skinned folk in summer. If you have a more dryness-prone skin type, still use this, but put a moisturizer on top of it if that makes sense. Because the ectoin in here is going to boost the barrier function of the skin, help protect the skin all day long. I love ectoin. It's one of my absolute favorite ingredients, but you usually have to pay quite top dollar to access it. Not with The Ordinary. Super inexpensive. It's your moisturizer and calming and soothing serum in one, which is perfection, and definitely deserves a place in this top 10 of 2026."
The Truth About Ectoin - THE ORDINARY RICE LIPIDS + ECTOIN Exposed
"You've got your ectoin where you need it. You've got your rice lipids for hydration. And this is a really nice option for people that are looking for a lightweight finish. Lots of ectoin products come in rich creams, which are going to be great if you've got dry skin, but for a lot of other people, we don't want a thick, heavy moisturizer. We want something super lightweight. This way, you can get your ectoin in a gorgeous, beautiful emulsion that disappears without a trace, works as a moisturizer and a hydrating serum all in one and yeah is just stunning. This I think is a great option if you want a super affordable ectoin product to put in your skincare routine and if you want something that isn't in a cream, you want something lightweight, this is the one that I would go for."
BEST FACIAL MOISTURIZERS 2026 - Maximum Skin Firming and Plumping
"This is the ordinary rice lipids and ectoin micro emulsion. It's a serum that badges itself as being a moisturizer. And this, I'd say, is pretty special. Now, the reason I say this is it is super lightweight. It's a beautiful emulsion which if you can see how this actually applies very lightweight but gives a meaningful level of hydration like you would get from a moisturizer. So if you're somebody that wants just super lightweight hydration this is the one I'd go for. You can use it at the end of your routine like you would a moisturizer or you can use it amongst your serums. It's really up to you. But that ectoin is wonderful for boosting the barrier function of the skin for hydrating and nourishing. And I just find that even if you have super super oily skin, give it a little TLC. Give it a little hydration. Just something super lightweight and it'll make such a difference. The Ordinary is the cheapest that does this style of product, which is why I think most people go for it."
What Just Happened - THE END OF HYALURONIC ACID
"This launched a couple of days ago and has already taken the skincare world by storm. You see a lot of people praising it for its ability to deliver real deep level hydration but with a super lightweight finish. It delivers everything we kind of wanted hyaluronic acid to do but in this case actually works. Impossibly lightweight, beautifully hydrating and also comes with a blend of other amazing ingredients. This is almost like two, three, four steps up from a hyaluronic acid serum in terms of the results it's going to deliver. And I think this is going to be a bit of an industry disruptor and gamechanger. In a lot of cases, this is a lot cheaper than say that Laroche Posay one. So you can make the switch. Greater benefits, fewer risks, side effects, and irritation. This I love because it contains a key ingredient called ectoin."
Official: MOISTURIZERS JUST LEVELED UP - Best Moisturizer 2026
"What makes this different is the texture. Super lightweight, super easy to apply. It almost has that emulsion-like quality that we're starting to see in a lot of products. This is the first time I've seen it done in a moisturizer. Taking those quality hydrating ingredients and leaving them in a beautifully light emulsion feel. That's where I think this product is really groundbreaking. You've got the rice lipids, which are fantastic at doing a nice balancing act with the skin. Our skin has a very delicate lipid balance and using these really help to enhance that rather than detract from it. It'll support with barrier function in the skin and just locking in all that hydration. You've also in here got ectoin which is hands down the best barrier supporting ingredient around."

"I went through it very quickly. This is one that I hate to say it, I probably at some point will repurchase again. It's not as rich and luxe and wow factor as some alternatives, but ectoin is great. It's an extremely light antioxidant. It's hydrating. That remains like one of the top ectoin products that I have used."

*NEW* The Ordinary Rice Lipids + Ectoin Microemulsion Review
"This is actually one of the better products from The Ordinary over the past few years. It's a solid budget friendly option for people who are curious about ectoin. Maybe have sensitive skin. You're looking for a little lightweight hydration, soothing, and you like me prefer fragrance-free stuff for your face. You don't get along with niacinamide. Well, this is an option for you. It's definitely worth checking out. Is it a holy grail for me? No. But I will gladly use it up."

"It's a lot more lightweight. It's more watery, but it is pretty emollient. I used it this morning and I've continued to use it since my review. I really, really like it though. It is just not as rich as the Paula's Choice one. I do think it can aid in dry skin, mature skin, where you have somewhat of a delay, a slowing down of epidermal maturation leading to a buildup of dry, rough skin texture coupled with a decline in water retaining abilities of the stratum corneum and a thinning of the stratum corneum. The thing I like about The Ordinary serum is that it also has urea, which is one of my favorite humectants because it is part of skin's natural moisturizing factors. It's typically pretty well tolerated and depending on the overall formulation, may even help to gently exfoliate the skin. I love the price point and like I said, I've continued to use it. I don't love it as much as the Paula's Choice one, but I love the price point a lot more and it's been great. I've been layering it underneath my sunscreen this morning. No problem."

"It's their rice lipids and ectoine microemulsion which will be 10 bucks. It's really nice water-based serum. It's supposed to help with redness and dehydrated skin as well. It contains rice extract which is really great hydrating ingredient and contains jojoba seed oil which is a really nice oil which is also kind of more friendly for acne-prone skin. Contains ectoine, urea and then several amino acids which are great for barrier repair and hydrating skin. It's got a really nice lightweight texture and soaks in really nicely and feels nice and hydrating on dry skin."

The Ordinary 🆕 New! Rice Lipids + Ectoin Microemulsion Moisturizer for Soothing Hydration & Redness
"It feels pretty nice. A little tacky, but not going to be a big deal since you're odds are going to apply something over it. So let's talk about the ingredients list. We've got rice lipids which are great for soothing. We've got ectoine. Ectoin is really nice antioxidant soothing ingredient. We've got urea. Really great, soothing ingredient, hydrating ingredient. Urea is really barrier repairing. It's great for all of that. Sodium hyaluronate. And then we've got several amino acids, which I like to see. Glycine, alanine, arginine, all of those amino acids are great for your skin. They're great for barrier repairing and wound healing."

"This new rice lipids in ectoine micro emulsion, which for some people this might be all the moisturizer you need. For me my skin's super dry. I'm in Minnesota where it's very dry. It's also very cold and the furnace is going non-stop. So I need all the moisture I can get. So I will layer the moisture on. Some people might just be able to get away with just using this and that's it. It's got a milky kind of texture. Couple of drops are usually enough. Feels nice and moisturized."

Best Fluid Lightweight Moisturizers - There's One for Every Skin Type
"The Ordinary Rice Lipids and Ectoin Micro Emulsion Moisturizer. This is my budget friendly pick. It's 2 oz for 13 bucks or you can get 4 ounces for I think it's 20 bucks, 21 bucks. So if you're on a budget, it's really nice. A little bit more affordable alternative. And it's still got the ectoine in there. It's got haba seed oil. It's got urea. It's got amino acids. It's got vitamin E. It's got it all going on. And it's got a really nice lotiony texture to it. I think a lot of people will probably be able to get away with this one on its own as a moisturizer, especially like in the spring or summer. It just feels really nicely hydrating."

"Ectoin is a perfectly nice ingredient. It's very nice. This is used for barrier support and hydration, but it's also one of those ingredients that has suddenly become very trendy. And it's a great ingredient to become trendy. Again, been around for a long time. Not a new groundbreaking ingredient that's going to revolutionize your routine, but it's nice. Then there's volufalene. This ingredient has been doing the rounds again recently, particularly in like lip and eye products with claims around plumping or volumizing. The issue is that the actual independent research behind volufalene is very limited. Most of what exists comes from the manufacturer data."

"I was having some issues with my barrier earlier in January. It did address those. I got my skin back on track. Using this product, it kind of helped to keep that progress going. It kept my skin progress up. So, I was really impressed with performance, with the feel, with the texture. I really enjoy using it. I just found that I had less dehydration in my skin overall. It's maybe 5% less hydrating overall than [Paula's Choice], but it's also a fraction of the cost."

"It's light but mighty. It does have a creamy emulsion hydrating moisturizing texture. While it's maybe not a one for one total replacement for [Paula's Choice] Actin Booster, it's pretty darn close. For saving that much cash, I could get a whole another skincare product for that savings. [...] It's actually a really good option. It's definitely helped my skin hold up in some of this more chilly weather. I've [...] been surprised at how hydrating, long lasting, dehydration busting this particular product has been. [...] That's really what it aims to do and that's what it does. [...] It really is just about hydrating and balancing the skin. That's exactly what it does."

"This light moisturizer is really runny, super runny. I wonder if this would just do better as a toning step. Not necessarily a traditional toner, but just to kind of start off my skin care."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
