What they liked

  • Cold-pressed formula
  • Gentle enough for sensitive skin
  • Works as an occlusive layer

What they flagged

  • Too heavy for combination or acne-prone skin
  • Best used at night, not daytime

What the gurus are saying

A fraction of Drunk Elephant's price, this cold-pressed marula oil delivers the identical product in a recyclable bottle. For dry and sensitive skin, it works beautifully as a gentle moisturizing occlusive to seal in hydration; it also nourishes hair, nails, and body. Those with acne-prone or combination skin, however, should skip facial oils like this; they aren't recommended for managing breakouts.

"Brandon went out and with his company the Ordinary literally packaged the exact same marula oil from the exact same manufacturer into the Ordinary bottle and sells it for $10 in a recyclable bottle. This is the exact same oil literally from the same manufacturer and it works extremely extremely well. If you wanted to get the marula oil for literally a seventh of the price, the Ordinary would be the way to go. It's a nice lightweight oil and I really love it for the hair and for the nails or even for the bath and for the body."
How To Get “That Girl” Skincare Routine… On A Budget.
"Do you know what The Ordinary has? Literally straight up virgin coldpressed marula oil for 10. The Ordinary's original founder, Brandon Truax, rest in peace, he actually got into fights with Drunk Elephant about the price of their marula oil, which is why he made his for $10. But The Ordinary's marula oil is fantastic and coldpressed and you are literally saving yourself six times the amount of money. Even formulation wise, it looks, it feels, and it absorbs as if it's the exact same thing."

"Next up is marula oil. Now this is a heavier oil. This is actually made a lot of, um, hair products have marula oil in them and they're used to coat the hair shaft, treat the hair shaft by coating the hair shaft, locking down the cuticle so that the hair doesn't experience damage. You can use the combination of the squalane and the marula to make your own pre-treat hair oil. I've been really into pre-treating my hair with oil before I've been shampooing lately to reduce the frizz, has increased the shine and manageability, and actually has been giving me a lot more body because I'm really protecting that hair before I go into the shower. If you have really fine hair you want to do maybe a few more drops of the squalane and maybe one of the marula. If you have thick hair that's really damaged, go for the marula oil, put some in a little bit of it before you wash your hair and your hair will come out so much softer and more manageable. I think keeping these around in your cabinet is great because they're great for skin care, hair care, and nail care."
