"The Ordinary actually ran a clinical study to test the dry versus damp skin thing. They tested their 2% hyaluronic acid and B5 serum on dry and damp skin, and it worked around the same on both. Plus, it's not drier after using hyaluronic acid, but unsurprisingly, it works better if you also have a moisturizer on top, but also there's no difference there between wet and dry skin. The amounts of hyaluronic acid are going to be pretty low. If you have hyaluronic acid and thickeners in a product, they can form a film on your skin. And as that film dries, it can contract a little bit. It's sort of like the skin on soup. So that tightening feeling could feel like your skin is dry. But it's not like damp skin is bad. If you prefer using it on damp skin, that is fine. I think it does have a benefit in that when you have extra water, then you're increasing the amount of stuff that you have on your skin to spread. So it can be easier to spread it out."

"The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant moisturizer that grabs onto water and keeps your skin hydrated by trapping water and keeping it on your skin. I don't think most people need a separate hyaluronic acid product. The main complaint that people have about it that I agree with is that it's just a bit boring as a humectant. There are so many other ingredients that can do more. Glycerin is in so many things and it's a really good humectant already. There's snail secretions which is just a heavy hitter. This is just a bit meh. I don't hate it but I probably wouldn't recommend it, but if you're using it I'm not going to knock it out of your hand."

"Whether it's Vichy Mineral 89 or if you have The Ordinary or the Inkey List hyaluronic acid or even CeraVe, you want to apply that to damp skin. The reason behind that is that hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate, it's a sugar that's naturally found in our skin and after age 25 we start losing the production, we start having less production of hyaluronic acid and less stores of hyaluronic acid, and so our skin becomes more dull, a little bit more crepey, dehydrated look to it, more wrinkles. So we want to add more hyaluronic acid to the skin. We want to apply it to damp skin, meaning after a cleanse or if you have one of those thermal sprays. You get that temporary plumping and then follow up with a moisturizer over it. A lot of patients aren't following up with the moisturizer as well, so if you just have your hyaluronic acid on your skin, yes the sugar is soaking up all the moisture in your skin but it's not going to retain it. You need an emollient to seal it all in and that's where a moisturizer comes in."

"This has recently been reformulated so the formulation isn't as sticky and as tacky as the original formula, but they've also added ceramides to the ingredient list which helps to repair and strengthen the skin barrier. Ceramides also help to prevent transepidermal water loss, so this serum is honestly really nice. I haven't experienced peeling with this one, which was one of my main reasons why I really didn't like the original hyaluronic acid from The Ordinary. I always had peeling with it, but I haven't experienced peeling with this yet, so I really like this one."

"The Ordinary just recently reformulated their cult favorite hyaluronic acid serum. There were a lot of complaints that people were saying the formulation was just too sticky and too tacky, and I found that to be the same, but I also felt like this pilled a lot with my skincare products. Now the formulation isn't as sticky and tacky, it's more lightweight, and it also does not pill anymore, which is amazing because if you've ever experienced skincare pilling it's awful. They have added ceramides to the formulation, and ceramides are great to have in skincare because they really help to strengthen and repair the skin barrier. That's especially important when you are using actives like tretinoin or retinol as it really does help to prevent transepidermal water loss. With hyaluronic acid, as you know, it's very hydrating and it can plump up the skin as well. "This is more of a first generation kind of vibe, a hyaluronic acid product, and it's just very sticky. I do think that both of these brands have done a very good job with it. I wouldn't say that they're like super luxurious or like the most amazing textural experiences I've ever had in skincare, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised. They broke some of those biases that I have about thick feeling, nonabsorbing, sticky hyaluronic acid. I think both of these actually come out ahead of some of the competitors that have similar formulas. One of my bigger concerns comes with the hydrating or non-hydrating factor of these types of formulations where hyaluronic acid is the star ingredient and one of the few ingredients in the formula, because hyaluronic acid, it always comes back to the size of that molecule. It's very, very big and it doesn't penetrate too deeply into the skin, so it's going to sit pretty close to the surface. Even when we chop up that molecule, chopping it up still creates a large type of molecule. It's smaller than the original, but it's still pretty big and they do dive into the skin at different levels, but they're not really getting super deep, diving incredibly deep."

This has three different weights of hyaluronic acid it has low, medium, and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid which means they're basically different sizes that can get into the skin and provide hydration. Hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid so no need to worry about exfoliating the skin with this, non-exfoliating, just purely hydrating, and it's also got that B5 in."

The real reason I'm making this video is the hyaluronic acid serum from the ordinary is eight dollars for a 30 milliliter bottle, while vegetable glycerin is three dollars for 118 milliliters, so you're paying too much for that."

"I've definitely noticed from the first application the skin is plumper, it's juicier, you get that extra hydration that I never got from the original hyaluronic acid from The Ordinary. They've actually altered the base formulation and because they've carefully balanced the ratios of the different forms of hyaluronic acid, this is so much more lightweight than the original serum. It's like chalk and cheese when you think of texture. If you find the original really tacky, sticky, thick and gloopy, you won't get that experience at all from this. It actually runs whereas the other one never would, and when you work it into the skin it disappears without a trace, no stickiness, no tackiness, and it just feels amazing. From someone who definitely was not a fan of the original, this has kind of won me round a little bit. Beyond just the addition of the different weights of hyaluronic acid and the different forms, you also have the addition of ceramides in here. Ceramides are a core component in our skin and if we have the right amount of ceramides it can actually help support with the hydration levels. It also contains vitamin E, which is a fantastic antioxidant and hydration powerhouse ingredient. When you take this all together, this is why I'm always tempted to refer to this as a new product launch rather than a reformulation."

So if you want to do anti-aging on a budget and plumpness is your key goal, get this. This is so good. I actually love it so much I covered it in a separate video. I think it's one of the most exciting new anti-aging launches of this year and it comes at that beautiful ordinary price point. So you're not overpaying, but you're definitely getting a little boost to skin density and plumpness. "I have hated this serum for the longest time. I thought it was unnecessary, I thought it was badly formulated, I never understood the hype. They've reformulated and honestly I think it's good enough to sneak into this top 10 now. The reformulation is key here. Previously it was a bit of a lazy formulation that just had hyaluronic acid and a calming and soothing B vitamin, that was it. My argument was always you get enough hyaluronic acid in the rest of your routine, you don't need a separate step. I stand by that, but I also think with the reformulation, which now includes ceramides, it's got multiple weights of hyaluronic acid to give a more just a greater depth of hydration. I think this genuinely stands out, particularly because they've added so much more into the formulation, but it cost $1 more so it's super affordable still. I think it's a good option. For me, I don't need this on the face. I get hyaluronic acid in the rest of my skin care, but I use this on the body. I'll get out of the shower, I'll lather this on, put a moisturizer over it, and I think this does help take my body hydration to the next level. If you like hyaluronic acid and you want to use it on the face, you absolutely can. This I think is a next level reformulation that is just good enough."
