What they liked

  • Strong grip to lock makeup in place

What they flagged

  • Balls up and peels on skin
  • Pilled with skincare products underneath
  • High silicone content clogged pores for some

What the gurus are saying

This primer tends to pill and peel on skin, especially over a full skincare routine, and both reviewers found it broke them out despite the grip it does provide for makeup wear. The high silicone content caused enough irritation that neither felt it was worth the trouble of scaling back their skincare to make it work.

"I tried these probably three or four years ago [...] and I was completely unimpressed. I don't think I used either of them more than a couple of times because they just didn't work that well. They tend to peel on the skin, they balled up. They did have a certain grip and tackiness to them so great for making sure your makeup really sticks, but beyond that they just weren't that easy to use. I also found that because both of them have quite a lot of dimethicone and silicones in them, they broke me out. That's not something that I always experience with silicones, but with these for some reason they definitely clogged the pores and definitely broke me out."

"I never liked this product. [...] It always pilled with my skincare products and sometimes it did peel with certain makeup formulations that I applied on top of it. [...] Once I applied all of my skincare products and then I applied that primer before my makeup, peeling everything just started balling off my skin because it has that silicone base. I am somebody that is not willing to eliminate a skincare routine just to use a makeup primer. [...] This product just always pilled, it was very inconsistent, and I had to eliminate my skincare routine for this to work with my makeup, which I wasn't willing to do."

"The Silicon primer, the Ordinary, it spreads like nothing you've ever spread before. Silicon in terms of FDA and research they say it really is not noncomedogenic but it does sometimes block pores. I'm not a fan of silicone. I know it spreads things really nicely and it makes products feel amazing but A it's bad for the environment, so it's not bad it's terrible for the environment. B it can block pores for people that are acne prone so I'd avoid using it for that, and C sometimes there are some case reports of some sensitivities which you have to be careful of. This is a great short-term thing like after you've done your exfoliation, if you put the silicone primer on it's actually quite good. After you've done the exfoliation and then you put the hydration then you put the primer on, this will look amazing if you're going to be doing something on like TikTok or Instagram and you want to look incredible. You will achieve this short-term glass look when you're putting the silicone on."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
