What the gurus are saying

Gurus praise the product's efficacy for hyperpigmentation, acne marks, and rosacea at a budget price, and consistently highlight its compatibility with other actives. A recent reformulation appears to have resolved the historic texture complaint of grittiness and pilling that deterred past users. The main divide is texture tolerance: some find it grainy or sandpapery, while others report it now glides on smoothly. Overall sentiment is strongly positive, with repeated endorsements for sensitive skin and as a versatile treatment option.

"The Ordinary 10% has a texture like thick PVA glue and this is because azelaic acid is hard to formulate with. It isn't very soluble, so it's usually in a suspension. And I mean, you need a pretty high amount. Things that are lightweight are usually dissolved, so think sugar and water versus flour and water. So I kept giving up on using azelaic acid. And eventually, I just put it to the side."

"For azelaic acid, the one that I'm using at the moment is The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%. It works really well. Nice mid strength, so it's not too potent, but it's also going to deliver results. Just a really great option."

Perfect THE ORDINARY SKINCARE ROUTINE - Anti Aging On A Budget
"This is The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension, which is a beautiful beautiful product. I put two drops of this in the palm of my hand and then I target this where I have the dynamic fine lines and wrinkles, so for me that's around the eye, the crow feet, the 11s here and the laughter lines too. I also put a little here because this can actually help slim down the jawline. I heard it's marginal but it helps it, like every little bit that I can do to help I'll take advantage of. I then make my own concoction of another couple of drops of the azelaic acid and then I'll open up The Ordinary Matrixyl and I will put a couple of drops of that in the palm of my hand too, so I now have two drops of azelaic acid and two drops of Matrixyl and then I'll put that over the rest of the skin. The reason I do this is it means you're getting that targeted dose of azelaic acid on those areas that you need it."
WORLDS GREATEST SKINCARE BRAND 2025 - Theramid Skincare Review
"If you've ever used The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension, for example, it feels like you're rubbing sand on the skin. Not nice. And also, because that azelaic acid isn't evenly distributed through the product, it can create sensitivity issues on certain areas."
THE ORDINARY ARE BACK - Full New Products Review ( The Ordinary Review 2024 )
"I think there's been a cheeky reformulation. Having tried and used this many times over my skincare journey, it's always been like almost a bit grainy, it's pilled, it's balled up, it's not worked. Let me tell you this now works like a dream. I don't know what they've done but it's worked miracles. It's not a new launch but it's a product that you might have tried in the past, not particularly liked, and let me tell you is worth a second chance. When you put an amount on, it is so gorgeous on the application. It just glides on and it disappears without a trace. Before it used to leave a film, a mask, it was really weird. It also smells slightly different, again fragrance free like all The Ordinary products, but the old one used to smell particularly odd. This actually doesn't. It's the same great strength of azelaic acid just in a better base formulation. It just feels so good. This is the product that you can now use with the rest of your serums, your lotions, your moisturizers without it balling up all over the place, whereas before you couldn't. I'm so impressed with how this feels on the skin. It almost acts a bit like a primer. It just gives you a really nice good skin day."

"It is phenomenal and the very best way of boosting your hyperpigmentation routine. It's super gentle, so it'll work for everyone, no matter the level of sensitivity you have. And you can use this as part of your skincare routine to just dial up the results that you see. It's actually clinically proven to be one of the very best over-the-counter hyperpigmentation and dark spot ingredients, and I would never be without it. The Ordinary is super inexpensive. You can use it without breaks. Not with Azelaic Acid. Just continue to use it."

AZELAIC ACID - What We Now Know ( How To Use Azealic Acid )
"A lot of people can start with a 10% azelaic acid and have no issues whatsoever. This is a great strength to go for if you've got very sensitive skin or you're a beginner. It's a great option for people that have acne and are using azelaic acid to really reduce those breakouts. A 10% strength is a great midpoint in the azelaic acid market."
TOP 5 HYPERPIGMENTATION SERUMS 2023 - Glowing Skin Guaranteed
"I tried this expecting to be disappointed. I actually tried it on a patch of discoloration on the body so I could see how it would work. It worked really well. I then started to use it on some areas where I had breakouts and I found that they hyperpigmented a lot less after using this than they did before and they faded a lot quicker. Don't let the fact that it seems super simple really fool you into believing you won't get great results you will, you just have to have a bit of patience. It's certainly not the quickest acting but I think it costs like 12 pounds here in the UK so really affordable. A little goes a long way and you've got a lot of flexibility with this. You can use it twice a day as an all over treatment or you can use it in a hyper localized way just on areas where you have those dark spots, those blemishes, areas you want to fade. The good thing about it as well is because it is so gentle you can use it alongside all your other active ingredients from your retinoids, your vitamin C's, it's all fine, this is compatible with it. So it's a really easy product to just slot straight into your skincare routine."

"If you like the idea of azelaic acid but don't have a prescription for it, you could try an over-the-counter version, like a 10% azelaic acid. The Ordinary has a great azelaic acid emulsion that layers very beautifully with other products and is incredibly affordable. Azelaic acid is really nice because it inhibits excess pigment production. It's an antioxidant. It helps smooth the skin. And for people who have easily irritated skin, for people who are pregnant, azelaic acid is an incredible option."

"The Ordinary does a really good azelaic acid. What you would do is you do your face wash, your exfoliator, your azelaic acid in the evening and then go in with your moisturizer. That will basically just help with any red marks left behind but also keep all the acne at bay. I haven't had a new pimple or any brand new spot on my face. It's literally kept it under control."

"Azelaic acid is an ingredient that is calming and soothing. Great for those that have sensitive skin. If you have redness, rosacea, azelaic acid is usually prescribed to those that have rosacea. And this is also another ingredient that is great for acne prone skin as well. I have been using azelaic acid all summer long. I actually started late spring and I've been using it ever since in both my morning and nighttime skincare routines because this has really helped to keep my skin clear. Do I still break out with azelaic acid? Yes, I do. Not as much though. This really cuts down on the breakouts, but it just keeps my skin so soft and it gives a brighter complexion. There is a mild exfoliation with azelaic acid, but it's not meant for exfoliation. It's very calming."

"The Ordinary has an Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%, and honestly those 10% concentrations are just as good as higher percentages. Azelaic acid can be very soothing and calming for those that have sensitive skin, it can also be great for those that have rosacea and acne prone skin. If you're using azelaic acid on its own and you are consistent with this ingredient, your skin is super bright and it really helps to address that uneven skin tone and it can help to reduce on rosiness as well."

"The Ordinary has the Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% and it has a cream base. I like a lot of different types of azelaic acids and you can find a lot of options over the counter. Azelaic acid really is great for all of those skin concerns. Since being consistent with azelaic acid, I have seen the biggest difference with my skin. I am somebody that has a little bit of redness to my skin naturally and azelaic acid has really reduced a lot of that rosiness that I was experiencing on my cheeks and my chin. I am breakout prone and azelaic acid has really decreased my breakouts. This ingredient is going to really help soften those dark spots and it's going to give you that brighter complexion in time."

AZELAIC ACID IS UNDERRATED! THIS SKINCARE INGREDIENT HAS REALLY IMPROVED MY REDNESS & ACNE!
"The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% is just your azelaic acid, so if you don't care about additional ingredients and just want something that is right to the point and gives you that azelaic acid ingredient, then I would say go with this one. This one really does help to prevent breakouts as well as reduce redness and fade discoloration. This is great to use every day twice a day. I've never had irritation with this one either. I would put about a pea-sized amount, maybe a little bit more, to the entire face. Because this is more of a cream texture, you really don't need to put a moisturizer on top of this if you don't want to. If you are using this in your morning routine, make sure that you are putting sunscreen on after."
RESULTS GUARANTEED! 10 PRO TRETINOIN/RETINAL PAIRINGS TO LIMIT SKIN IRRITATION AND SIGNS OF AGING
"The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% has a creamy formulation. The more consistent you are with azelaic acid, especially if you're acne prone, this along with your tretinoin will really help to prevent breakouts. Before using tretinoin I was always breaking out, and just tretinoin alone has improved my skin, but especially more so now that I've incorporated azelaic acid. The redness that I had to my skin naturally has really subsided as well. If you are dealing with acne, rosacea, and redness, this with your tretinoin or with a retinoid is game-changing."
THE ORDINARY'S BEST PRODUCTS FOR OILY/COMBO & ACNE PRONE SKIN!
"This is a wonderful ingredient for redness if you have rosacea, texture, or uneven skin tone from post-acne marks. Azelaic acid can help to even out your skin tone in time, giving your complexion that brighter look, and it can also help prevent acne at the same time. I like this one from The Ordinary because it's in a creamy base, so it's very moisturizing and very gentle as well, suited for all skin types, and you can use this on an everyday basis. I like using azelaic acid with my prescription tretinoin at nighttime, and ever since I started using azelaic acid with tretinoin, I have seen a huge difference in the way my skin looks. I don't break out as much anymore. You can use this with tretinoin and with your retinol, just be cautious because we all have different skin and this could lead to further irritation and dryness for some skin types, so maybe start slow and work your way up to see how your skin adjusts. But you can use this on its own or pair it up with other types of serums as well."

"Azelaic acid helps for acne, it helps for hyperpigmentation. I think it's a supporting ingredient. I love azelaic acid, I think it's great. Do I think you should use only azelaic acid absolutely not unless you for some reason can only use that one ingredient. I think it's a supporting ingredient it shines best when combined with something like tretinoin. You can use azelaic acid once a day in the morning, you can use it twice a day, and then you tretinoin at night, either way whatever your skin tolerates is a good thing for hyperpigmentation, that is absolutely fine."

Then of course you want to apply sunscreen, super important when it comes to healing your acne marks and scars. "I really like the Azelaic Acid Suspension by The Ordinary. They have a great suspension formula. Azelaic acid is an ingredient which has a lot of benefits. If you are suffering from active acne it helps work down the inflammation. If your skin has irritation, redness, it can work all of that down. Azelaic acid is also very good because you can get it in a lot of different formats across different price points. It's such a multi-faceted product. For the longest time I have always carried The Ordinary Azelaic Acid. This time I carried Anuva and to my surprise this product worked really really well on me. When I was in India I realized that even though I was not breaking out I was getting small bumps, and this handled it."

"If you're getting acne, it's going to make sure you don't get acne, so it controls acne. It is going to exfoliate your skin and it is going to work on your hyperpigmentation. Azelaic acid is one of the most underrated ingredients in skincare for the last couple of years including now. Azelaic acid is a game changer. If your skin is super, super sensitive, opt for the plum azelaic acid in serica, which is just like applied base serum on your face, it is super gentle and it works. But if your skin isn't that sensitive, then for better results I recommend The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension. Take a little more than a pea-size amount, like a coin-size amount."

"Azelaic Acid is very non-irritating, very gentle. You can use The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension. As a beginner, you will use it three to four times a week spaced out, and when your skin tolerates it well, then you can use it daily. Azelaic Acid is one of those serums that you cannot jump straight to daily use with because that is going to irritate your skin. You have to start slowly, you have to start in a very calm way, and as your skin adjusts you can use it accordingly. If your face has acne or your face is acne-prone, which causes acne marks as well, you can opt in for azelaic acid serum and you can get very good results if you choose your serum correctly."

It's like a little tingling sensation that you feel when you use azelaic acid, and within two minutes it settles down, so it's nothing to worry about. If your skin is hypersensitive and you cannot really tolerate it, then I would recommend the Plum Azelaic Acid in Serum, which is a fabulous product. But The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension is a very good option and very affordable."

"This is the most underrated hero for pigmentation in the skincare world. It is a mild exfoliating serum, but not the kind of exfoliation like lactic, glycolic, or mandelic. You can use it in the morning comfortably. You can use it seven days a week. It is mild, mild, mild. And this is something that will just work on your overall complexion. It brightens your skin, treats your marks. It takes a little long but works 100%. It contains azelaic acid, so it is hydrating, but what a lot of people don't know is that azelaic acid is also a great depigmenting ingredient. It has the ability to brighten the skin. So it is a very amazing ingredient. You just have to apply one serum in the morning on a clean dry face, half a dropper full, which contains three to four drops. Apply it all over the face, avoid the under-eye area. After this, moisturizer and sunscreen. If your skin becomes very oily, skip your moisturizer and just go in with your sunscreen. Otherwise, if you have dry skin, then moisturizer and sunscreen."

"The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% really offers more calming and soothing benefits. If you're looking for anti-pigmentation and helping with hyperpigmentation, it's really prescription strength of 15 to 20% that's shown to have the best evidence. But 10% offers probably more calming and soothing benefits. This one is affordable, helps to target maybe helping with some uneven skin tone, dullness, but really has antioxidant benefits as well and also has squalane and the 10% azelaic acid that may offer some barrier support along with glycerin."

"Azelaic acid is a great ingredient with many potential benefits for the skin: hyperpigmentation, redness. It is good for people who have rosacea, it's also good for imparting some acne control. It's great too if you're someone whose acne heals with either redness or hyperpigmentation because not only does it offer a little bit of acne control potentially, it also helps address those things. So it's a really useful ingredient, generally well tolerated."

"The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension is good but it is kind of thick and viscous. Some people don't like the consistency of it. If you want something more lightweight, I would suggest a different option."

"I love the Ordinary's azelaic acid suspension, great for redness, dark spots. The azelaic acid is also good not only for redness but for hyperpigmentation, a bit of acne control, and rosacea."

"Azelaic acid kills them and helps get rid of them and that's why it helps with rosacea. Azelaic acid kind of sinks down into your skin into your pores and things like that which also is why it makes it so effective for acne. Some of these are much more affordable which is nice."

Dr Sam's Flawless Neutralizing Gel with Azelaic Acid and Salicylic Acid Review, How to, and Dupes
"In terms of performance I'm really impressed with this. I love the combination of azelaic acid and salicylic acid. For troubled acne-prone skin it could be a total winner. For people that are able to find benefits from a small amount of azelaic acid and BHA it's great. It certainly helps with clogged pores, also helps calm skin down a bit. I also found this helps brighten my skin up. For acne-prone skin there's only two ingredients of note: squalene and glycerol stearate, so it's pretty friendly for all skin types, dry, oily, sensitive, and acne-prone. I love the two-for-one. It retails for 39 bucks so it's a little pricey. It's super nice, super wonderful product, something I definitely would consider repurchasing."
Theramid 15% Azelaic Acid Treatment Review, How to Use, and Dupes
"The one from The Ordinary is thick and pilled. I fell in love with azelaic acid because it's such an amazing ingredient for so many different things, different types of skin that you would never think would benefit from the same ingredient all kind of come together with this ingredient."

It was finally when I added it into my routine it became a game changer for me, how much it helped with redness and hyperpigmentation and prevents breakouts and things like that. So it's amazing."

All About Azelaic Acid + Product Recs!
"This product is one of the more affordable ones and I think it's one of the more accessible brands depending on where you live. If you want to try azelaic acid but you don't want to break the bank and spend $40 on Polish Choice, or you're not ready to commit to a dermatologist or an online service, this is a great formula. It's especially great for those who do have skin sensitivities because there's no fragrance, essential oils, or drying forms of alcohol. This formula sidesteps a lot of other ingredients, so if you have sensitivities to hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, plant extracts, anything like that, it's not in here. It's just azelaic acid and a bunch of texture enhancers and silicone and things that help to deliver the azelaic acid into your skin. It absolutely can stand up to being mixed with a little bit of moisturizer without deactivating it or compromising the formula or the effectiveness of it."

Layering The Ordinary: Pigmentation Magic or Just Marketing?
"The Ordinary does an azelaic acid 10% suspension which is fantastic because it improves redness and if you look at pigmentation it's got slight reddish tones within there as well, so it reduces redness, it'll reduce sensitivity, but it'll also help with pigmentation. It has an effect on that enzyme tyrosinase and it's fantastic for reducing things like breakouts or skin sensitivities. It's a great all-round skin ingredient that should be part of essentially most people's routines to be quite honest."
The Ultimate Acne Treatment Azelaic Acid | What Causes Acne and How To Treat It?
"The Ordinary 10 percent, I had a look at the formulation and it's quite nice for azelaic acid. Simple preparation and you can put on the skin, not too thick of a formula either, and actually very very useful to put into your regime. I would use it first thing on the skin and then moisturize afterwards because of this decreasing the keratin nature it can dry out the skin a little bit, so you've got to be a bit careful about maybe not damaging your skin barrier."

"The Ordinary, this one's great at night when you have nowhere to go and you don't care who you're seeing. It is a 10% azelaic acid suspension. You do kind of sometimes have to shake it, I feel, but it appears nice and elegant. But it does pill after a while, so do not be fooled by the first impression with this. It's 11 bucks though, so you're not really going to go wrong."

"This azelaic acid suspension is so good for the price it's under $10 and for anyone who has rosacea that is diagnosed by a doctor or a Derm, anyone who has redness in the skin, anyone who wants a pregnancy safe acne option, this is so good. It kind of feels like a moisturizer on the skin, so this is one that's not a serum but you can layer this with other serums or you could put this on first as a serum step and then use a really thick moisturizer over the top. If you are someone who has dry skin or if you're working with someone who has dry skin, this is so good. It is a 10%, so it's a decent amount, and the best part is that you can use this little skin hero morning or evening, very versatile, absolutely phenomenal. This is definitely very close to the top of the list. I would say that this is in the top five."

"I have The Ordinary's azelaic acid, which I haven't talked about yet. Azelaic acid can also be good for skin brightening and lightening. This one is a 10% suspension and it's a little bit gritty and a little bit irritating, so use this with that in mind. Just try it a couple days a week, it'll be a little bit irritating."
