What the gurus are saying

The gurus split sharply on this one. Those who favor it (largely skincare experts focused on aging skin) report visible brightening, improved texture, and a refreshed appearance when used once weekly for 5 to 10 minutes, and note it suits most skin types. However, multiple reviewers caution that the high concentration has caused sensitivity and irritation in many people at home, and that gentler exfoliants used consistently deliver similar results with far fewer side effects. Anyone with sensitive or reactive skin, or those prone to irritation, may want to steer clear or patch-test carefully first.

"The one that I like to use a lot for a chemical peel is The Ordinary. This is an AHA BHA combination, which I love. It's the one that's bright red, so you look like a vampire when you put it on. I use it once a week as part of my skin care calendar."

"This is The Ordinary 30% AHA, 2% BHA. It's the one that's red, right? So it looks like it's really striking in social media posts, but I put this on my shoulders. I put this on my chest. I put this on the back of my arms. I'll use this on my knees sometimes. And you follow the directions just like you did for your face. You leave it on, I think it was 3 to 5 minutes, but you leave it on and then you rinse it off. Sometimes before I'll jump in the shower, I'm like, okay, set a timer, I'll put this on and then jump in the shower and rinse it off. Your elbows deserve to look as good as you want them to do. If your face is looking like it's 30, your elbows deserve to look like they're 30 as well. And you can do that with chemical peels."

"The one that I like the best if I can find it is The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. This is the one that's bright red and you leave it on for 5 minutes and then rinse it off. It's not a very strong peel, nor should you be doing a very strong peel at home, but if you're doing a weekly peel, this is great for that."

"My favorite for the chemical peels has been for a long time The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2%. This is great for all skin types. This is the one that turns bright red, you guys, like a crazy person. So you got the bright red, looks like blood's on your face. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse it off. All of that stuff helps to lift hyperpigmentation. Anytime you're increasing cell turnover, you're lifting hyperpigmentation."

"Their AHA 30% BHA 2% peeling solution is also another popular product for the brand. And it's also one that many people complain is far too strong. Like people at home just don't need this. Of course, every skin is different and not everybody needs something as strong as a lot of what The Ordinary products are. But a lot of skincare enthusiasts were still made to feel like these products were suitable for them."

Skincare Products I Thought I’d Love💜…But Ended Up Hating! 😭 & More TikTok Skincare Videos
"The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, I just don't think it's worth the hassle. [...] It was a viral product on YouTube and was kind of being sold as like an at-home chemical peel. My issue isn't that it's too strong or people misuse it, [...] my issue is that I just don't feel like it made a big difference for me. My own personal skincare philosophy stops me using this because I just don't see the point anymore of doing such a strong exfoliation at home once off every so often if I'm just regularly exfoliating. I just don't think it's a necessary product nowadays. When everyone was into their really high actives, I think it was interesting and we were all so obsessed with it and we always felt like we needed those strong percentages in order to get effective results. I just don't think that's the case anymore."
Are The Ordinary's Products Actually Dangerous? The Truth About The Chemical Burn Claims
"At first there were no issues whatsoever. But the day after she used the solution for the first time, she started to notice little bumps all over her chin. Her skin in the area also felt tighter and was starting to burn. By the third day, there were blisters covering my chin. At this point, the pain was probably about a 5. However, as the days went by, the pain got worse. I couldn't eat, I could barely open my mouth and I had to keep a protective gauze on the area."

"This is a great product if your skin can take those high percentages and if you read the instructions and use it properly. It's a great affordable at-home option for you, but I don't necessarily think it's for everyone. I don't think everyone needs to do it, and I don't think everybody needs this crazy percentage of exfoliation. I'm bored of seeing it because it's always been used in the wrong way and in a way to grab attention."

Skincare Brands Are In Trouble - THE END FOR EXFOLIATION?
"The Ordinary Peeling Solution is super high potency. It was the best selling exfoliator in 2022, but cut to 2024, this isn't even in the top 20 best sellers from The Ordinary. Sales have literally fallen off a cliff. [...] A lot of countries have just outright banned this product, it's been banned for a whole long time in Canada, but that ban has extended to Australia and certain European countries. [...] Countries are tightening their restrictions on what's allowed in terms of strength and percentage, and a product of super high strength like this one just isn't allowed anymore."
❌ THE ORDINARY FAILED US - 5 Products I Would Never Use
"A true fail in my book would be the red peel, The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. I [...] think the way we see exfoliation has changed so much in the last couple of years and so far fewer people are reaching for this product. [...] People now see this in a different light. Instead of exfoliating every single day and opting for the highest strength option, we now use exfoliators a lot less frequently and tend to go for more gentle formulations. Consistency is key when it comes to exfoliation. Instead of trying to blast off the skin with a sky-high concentration as in the red peel, something more gentle like The Ordinary Lactic Acid in a 5 or 10% strength used a couple of times a week will give you the same great results but with a lot less sensitivity, irritation, and far fewer side effects."

"I would say be cautious of their peeling solution. I feel like that has messed up so many people's skin because they didn't realize how harsh it was. It's like 30% AHA in there."

"I don't really care for The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, that leave on that vampire purplish red solution. The chemical peel like effect that patients are getting is nice in terms of that deep pore cleaning action. It's really exfoliating the skin, but I've seen patients overuse it and I'd say you would use that like once a week. It's so powerful. Summer time, you got to be very careful with the sun. So, I would say be careful with the strong leave on exfoliants."

"You only need a thin layer. Your skin doesn't have to be super dark red. The first thing that I notice is the brightness of my face. I just feel like my skin looks more refreshed. My forehead has like a sheen to it. It really improved texture right off the bat and I just have this nice refreshed appearance to my skin. I had a little bit of texture on my cheeks prior to applying the serum and it's not as bad. My skin's not red. It's not irritated. It feels really good. It's a little tight but my skin is always like that every time I use some type of chemical exfoliant. It just looks more refreshed and I like how nice and bright my skin looks as well."

"I do love the ordinary that peeling solution which is 2% BHA 30% AHA but it scares me. I don't think it would suit your skin if you're sensitive. I mean, I don't put any, I get my perioral dermatitis here so I just can't put it there."

"I always recommend using a peeling solution not just on your face but also on your body. The Ordinary peeling solution, minimalist dermac Co k branding solution. Now understand winter in general your skin's getting drier, solution based lotion which you should not do, but if you do all of that your skin is going to be super super dry specifically your elbows your knees and toes and the areas between the toes they get extremely dry. So make sure you use a thick layer of Vaseline on these areas, [...] and that is going to help you. By the time the summers come and you're not wearing all of that winter clothing your skin is going to be glowing and beautiful and well hydrated. [...] By making sure that you're using your peeling solutions your body lotions and loading up some Vaseline on your body it is going to make you look soft glowy and beautiful."

"You can use something like the Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution as well as the Paulas Choice one two or three times a week just to help with further exfoliation within the area. You don't want to overdo it because you can increase your chances of sensitivity, but using this two or three times a week is going to be a really good idea. The other thing [...] which you might have seen me on social media using for those blackheads, especially if you're a darker skin type, is not use the AHA BHA because this can increase the amount of pigmentation if you use it too regularly because of the amount of glycolic acid in it."
AHA vs BHA | The Best Skin Exfoliants (Water-based vs Oil-based) | Dr. Somji & Dr. Solomon Explain
"The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution has malic acid, tartaric acid, and citric acid in it, so you get quite a lot. [...] The concentration of those other types of AHAs are a little bit lower. I think if you're going to start off with an AHA for dry, dehydrated skin, your best bet is mandelic acid. If you're a lighter skin type and you've got acne with a little bit more pigmentation associated with it, then glycolic acid is a good one to start with. And if you've got super super sensitive skin, then you can really go through The Ordinary formulations with lactic acid. The Ordinary AHA BHA needs to be used correctly, there is another video on our channel talking about how to use that correctly and also on all of our social media."

Layering The Ordinary: Pigmentation Magic or Just Marketing?
"If you've been using this regime for 2-3 weeks or 3-4 weeks and you're seeing improvement in pigmentation but you want that to move faster, then you need to be [...] using a chemical exfoliant. You can use [...] the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution [...] 2 to 3 times a week after cleansing. You want to use 5 drops of the serum, spread evenly around the face, making sure that you only leave it on initially for a few minutes and then slowly progress to a little bit longer. Then you cleanse that off and continue your routine. [...] You want to do that 2 or 3 times a week because you want to be peeling those layers, especially if your pigmentation is deeper. If you press down on the pigmentation and it doesn't go, that means the pigmentation is deeper and you need to be using these exfoliants so that you can slot it in quite nicely within your regime really easily. Always check for conflicts on The Ordinary website in terms of mixing those things, but you can use it directly after the cleanser and then cleanse it off and then you can continue with your other products."

"It's a very potent product. 30% is a lot. I have absolutely used this and I have absolutely irritated and burned my skin when using this, even with caution. [...] It's a very potent AHA product. [...] There was a lot of misinformation about what it can do and who it's suitable for, and I do still feel like there is a lot of that going around. "This is the 30% glycolic acid peel from The Ordinary. I don't on the whole have a problem with this product. It definitely burned and irritated my skin, right? Absolutely it did. It is so dang potent. It is so strong. This is an aggressive form of AHA. Glycolic acid itself is one of the strongest, fastest acting, most potent version of AHA that you can use. Lactic acid is gentler. [Mandelic] acid is gentler. But it is also one that can cause a lot of sensitivity on the skin. I use glycolic acid products today that are about 15%, so half of the percentage of this product from The Ordinary, and it stings. It feels like little pin pricks on my skin. And that's actually normal. That is common. That is to be expected when you use glycolic acid at high percentages. Even at 15% pin prick sensations are normal. So at 30% double like my goodness, we're getting almost into a professional percentage where things can go wrong very quickly."

THE ORDINARY BARRIER REPAIR SERUM - I'M SHOCKED!
"If you used an AHA BHA The Ordinary exfoliator, that is quite harsh and that can lead to damaged skin barrier. I don't actually recommend that product for skin of color at all. "I use that product, the ordinary red peel mask, about once a month to just bulldoze off the dead skin cells on my face, but it's very strong. DECIEM: THE ORDINARY & NIOD | Innovative Anti-Aging Skincare on a Budget
"The AHA BHA peeling solution [...] does peel. It has 30% AHAs so it has a combination of lactic and glycolic but mostly glycolic. Glycolic is a very small molecule, it's an alpha hydroxy acid but it can penetrate into the skin a little bit more deeply. It's supposed to help with collagen production as well as exfoliation. But this is a very intense formula. I haven't used this in a while to be perfectly honest because my skin's been a little bit irritated and I've had to back off my exfoliation routine a little bit. If you want a great resurfacing treatment and you're very experienced with chemical exfoliants, you know how your skin is going to react to glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid, this could be a great solution for you at a really reasonable price. But quick reminder with all the exfoliants you need to do a patch test and you also need to wear your SPF."

Are You Overdoing It? The Truth About Skin Barrier Repair | Doctor Anne
"No hate for that specific product, it is great when used by the right person in the right frequency. It's merely an example of the common overuse of peelings, since without proper guidance you could see people using it daily for that elusive glow, which strips the skin of everything that made up the barrier."

"This is a very strong product and it is definitely one where a lot of precautions should be taken. It may not feel that harsh for every person out there, but for some of us it can do a lot of damage, you really want to make sure to use this one correctly. It's not okay to leave this on overnight. Its really low price point makes it appealing to just try out for fun, but in my opinion you should take all of the precautions with this, use it as directed and be careful, because I really cannot use this at all and I don't think I'm alone, even though I still do believe the people who say it's not strong for them, everyone has different skin."

"Everyone was obsessed with The Ordinary's BHA and AHA peeling solution, which is 2% BHA married to 30% AHA. This can burn your face off. If you do this way too much, you are going to over strip your skin of its natural oils, making you then have an inflamed barrier, making your inflammation probably worse, and making you then overproduce oils because you're basically stripping your skin of what it naturally produces. Don't overdo this—you don't really want to burn your face off. I don't usually recommend this one on a regular basis at all. Thirty percent is a lot."

"The Ordinary decided to create an AHA 30% BHA 2% solution. The pH of this is correct at 3.6, but this will rip your face off. All of you guys on TikTok out there, please stop doing this every week, several times a week. Your face is getting messed up. Maybe once a week if you want to do a deep one, but you really don't need to be doing it every day by any means."

"I also use the Ordinary AHA 30 Plus BHA 2 as an alternative for my weekly Sunday peel. These are both alpha hydroxy acid-based chemical peels and work very well. The Ordinary is an inexpensive dupe for the Drunk Elephant. This one is a little bit more of an aggressive peel with more skin sloughing and peeling off the next day, which can get in the way of how my makeup looks, but it works very well."

"This is a fragrance-free option that I rely on and share with clients. You can start off with 1 minute before you do all 10. This actually gives you results, skin looks clearer, more fresh, glowy, hydrated. It helps with blackheads and acne because of that BHA, and especially if you do this regularly over time it can really help with skin resurfacing. I struggled with bad acne for so many years, and I do think it's because of treatments I've done including chemical peels including this one for the past 3 years almost non-stop that my acne scars do not look as indented or as obvious as they could be. After I use this peel my skin, my pores, they just all look better and other people have noticed that too. Of course don't use this and go in the sun, use this at night and then sunscreen responsibly the next day. The AHA BHA peeling solution is fantastic because it has that salicylic acid, but sometimes there are people who have dry skin and acne and that's really rough to treat because a lot of acne treatments including BHA can be a little bit more drying. Well, The Ordinary has an anhydrous salicylic acid, this is basically BHA in oil, and I'm so happy they launched this because this is so good. It has no water in it so it's anhydrous."

3 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About The Ordinary
"The Ordinary has actives, don't get me wrong. They've got the AHA BHA peeling solution, they've got these other acids like glycolic acid, they've got retinoids. Yes, The Ordinary can be very potent and yes it has unfortunately caused irritation and burned holes in people's skin barriers literally with the acids. But if you do have sensitive skin, you're not banned from using The Ordinary."

"This is one of the best things that I found over the counter because it is the most potent chemical peel that you can get without a professional license. This is so good it is one of my favorites and I use it on the RS. The acids in this product work by breaking down the bonds between our skin cells as well as help exfoliating off some of those dead skin cells. You can do this maybe once a month maybe once a week if you're super super attuned to it more than that can be a lot."

"The Ordinary is a reputable brand, and if you look at their AHA BHA peel, you know that BHA is the same thing as salicylic acid. So you can say yes, this is something that is worth my money that I should try for my acne and for my skin condition."

3 Alternatives to The Ordinary AHA BHA Peel If You Have Sensitive Skin
"The Ordinary AHA BHA Peeling Solution is the highest percentage of AHA and BHA that you can get over the counter without a medical license. It's a very potent product that can help with acne, fine lines, minimal surface scarring, and some low-level pigmentation, but yes, you can burn yourself. Some people can use this completely fine with no problem, but it does take a little bit of skill and you shouldn't just dive in on day one—you should build up to it. But overall, this is one of my favorite skincare products of all times."
How to STOP Spending Your Money on Expensive Skincare and Appointments Try This At Home First!
"If your skin is resilient, if you got acne scarring, if nothing burns you except for your own emotions, the Ordinary AHA BHA peel baby, this is where it's at, this is my favorite. I look like I murdered somebody, vampire facial, it turns your face red. I have used it on my back and my chest and my body, I use this all over my body and it does help me with my back, my chest and my face acne. AHA, known as alpha hydroxy acids, and BHA, known as beta hydroxy acid, are the same acids that are in chemical peels, they're just at a lower level that are sold over the counter. This is not for the faint of heart but you're still getting some of those benefits, you're getting the exfoliation, the renewed skin, helping with the acne because this has that BHA, helping with scarring potentially, lifting some surface level hyperpigmentation, and AHAs hold on to water so it can also help with plumping up the skin with fine lines and wrinkles."
I used the ordinary peeling solution for 3 years and THIS is what it did to my face...
"I have been using this for over three years now and it has done insane things to my skin. It is literally transformed my facial acne, my body acne, my acne scars, and for eight dollars it has made such a difference in my life and in my skin. This is the most potent peel that you can get over the counter without being a licensed esthetician or medical practitioner. I would say on average for the last three years I have used it about once a week on dry skin, leave it on for 10 minutes, use an acid neutralizer or water to wash it off. It is a powerful thing and it isn't for everyone, but for the right skin type and skin condition I think it makes a huge difference. I do have to say that I have made mistakes with it, and I have done things that I don't recommend, such as keeping it on my face longer than 10 minutes or applying it on wet skin, but it is literally transformed my facial acne, my body acne, my acne scars. This is the one thing I keep coming back to, it keeps me consistent, and I do think it has made a huge difference in my skin and in my routine. For eight dollars it's accessible, it's affordable, it's vegan, cruelty-free, and it's something I recommend to everyone whose skin can handle it. If you do have acne, if you have acne scars, oily skin, and not a huge risk of pigmentation or rosacea, this is fantastic. It has absolutely been like a little best friend of mine, it makes me feel good, it makes my wallet feel good, and it's one of the things that I genuinely don't shut up about because it's made such a difference in my routine."
The Best Products I’ve Ever Used As An Esthetician
"The ordinary's AHA BHA peel is one of the most potent that you can get without a medical aesthetic license and I do have this in clinic and I do use it on some people but I actually don't rely on this as often as people think I do because in clinic we literally have just an peels, we have a TCA peel, like we've got some intense stuff. I usually have this on hand or this on hand and from Paula's Choice for people who are too afraid or who are building up to those larger chemical peels."

FULL BODY AHA BHA Peel From The Ordinary… 🥲 just be careful
"This little puppy from The Ordinary is inexpensive but effective and I have used it for years now on my chest and back. It's a chemical peeling mask with the highest concentration of alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids that you can get over the counter, so there's a lot of room for things to go wrong, but this can make an amazing body exfoliant if you use it properly. I've been doing this for at least a year and nothing has gone wrong, and I'm in love with it. It exfoliates the knees and elbows, helps them glow, and because it has these alpha hydroxy acids it also helps to kind of moisturize those areas. It works so well on the legs if you get ingrown hairs and stubbles. It's fantastic on the back and on the chest if you have sun spots, hyperpigmentation, active acne and scars. I have active acne all down my back and this is fantastic for anyone who struggles with that. When it comes to this bottle it has 30 milliliters or one fluid ounce of product and I can actually do two to three whole body head to toe coverings of this before I run out, and considering that this entire bottle is under ten dollars it's actually a really good bang for your buck when you think about how much a traditional chemical peel would cost elsewhere."

This has the highest percent, thirty percent of AHAs, and the highest percent, two percent of BHA, that you can get over the counter. This little blood bath in a bottle is literally one of my favorites to use. This is best for those skincare nerds who like to live life on the wild side. It's not for everyone, and everyone does have different skin, but it is hands down one of my favorites, especially if you need exfoliation and if you are acne prone."

⭐ Reading 1 Star Reviews Of My Favorite Skincare Products!
"This is a super controversial product because some people put it on for a second and it burns their skin off and for other people like me they can leave it on more than the intended amount of time and it literally does nothing for them. It just goes to show that everybody's skin is different. One person says please make sure that you can handle this, they saw really good reviews and tried it and it was good for about two weeks but the third time they did it, it left their skin raw, red with blister-like bumps on it, and their face was extremely sensitive. This stayed for about a week but the redness somewhat reduced and sensitivity stayed two weeks after the last use. They do not recommend this if you have young or sensitive or dry skin. But then someone else goes and says they felt no tingling sensation at all and no matter how much product they used, they've seen no difference at all in their skin."

"I love this product, but there are some people that this product is simply not for. It can burn some people's skin, it can be overly irritating, but then there are other people who just don't feel it at all. I love putting this cranberry red blood bath on my face, letting it exfoliate to help with my acne. It is amazing—salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, Tasmanian pepper berry. If you're nervous about it, this is the time to get it, but patch test first. They almost had a lawsuit and it could have potentially been a class action, and I was worried they would take it off the market. Let's just hope that the Black Friday craze does not take this product off the market, because if the supply chain impacted this product, I don't know what I would do."
They Said, “This Is The Best Skincare Of 2021” but I Disagree | Critiquing/Correcting Allure Awards
"The Ordinary's AHA 30% BHA 2% Peeling Solution is amazing. I was not expecting to see this in the awards, especially because I feel like this product was more 2020. Everyone says this product is over hyped for seven dollars, it is absolutely overhyped but it is also not overhyped enough. This is one of the most amazing products. It makes me look like I'm bleeding. It does its job well. It is literally the highest percentage of alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids that you can get over the counter, closest you can get to a medical-grade chemical peel. The refined texture and the dewy glow you'll experience can happen after one dose. I absolutely love this. I use it on my chest and my back. Seven dollars to look like a bleeding vampire and have great exfoliated skin, especially if you have acne."
my skincare routine took forever because it's great - Tools & Treatments (Part 2)
"The AHA BHA peeling solution from The Ordinary is one of the main ingredients in my skincare routine. This is effective for my sebaceous filaments, though I feel like my toner in my regular routine is better for that overall."
CHEMICAL PEELS: How To Prepare Your Skin For The ordinary Aha Bha Peeling Solution (Or Other Peels)
"I love this product, people love this product. It's the highest strength of AHA and BHA chemical exfoliants that you can get over the counter. I have very resilient skin and have done lots of peels and treatments, so I don't even feel this when it goes on. It can give you great glowing skin that chemical exfoliation can do, but you need to prepare your skin properly before using it and be smart about timing it away from sun exposure."
OverExfoliation 911 - How to Recover from the Ordinary's AHA BHA Peel / Minor Chemical Burns
"This peeling solution can be too much for some people and not enough for others. For me it doesn't really have any sensation at all, but everyone's skin is different, which is why it's important to know what to do if you do overuse it. This bad boy can burn and sting for some people, and if you overuse it or overdo it, here's the protocol you can use at home to try to take care of and rehab your skin. It probably won't cause your face to blister, burn, or peel, but it's better to know and better to be safe than sorry."

"The Ordinary Peeling Solution is your most affordable option and I recommend this for experienced users only. This is kind of a wild product. It can be very beneficial but you need to be super careful with this and patch test it before using. It has a 30 percent AHA combination. This is not 30 percent glycolic acid, it's an AHA mixture including glycolic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acid, and it has two percent beta hydroxy acid in the form of salicylic acid. You will apply this precisely as recommended on the label."

I recommend this no more than once a week."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Source: DermNet

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Source: NIH, National Library of Medicine

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
