What they liked

  • More affordable than competing 20% niacinamide serums

What they flagged

  • Gets pasty and peels under other products
  • 20% concentration very strong, needs careful spacing
  • Doesn't layer well with other steps

What the gurus are saying

The high 20% niacinamide concentration is potent enough to warrant caution. One expert found it didn't deliver, while another flagged the strength as something best used sparingly (roughly twice weekly with rest days in between) because at that level it can be a lot for skin to handle. This one may suit only those with very resilient, oily skin who've used niacinamide before.

"The Inkey List niacinamide serum combines two basic actives, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, that fit into everybody's routine, since everyone can benefit from both and it is usually fine alongside other treatment serums. A lot of people will say The Ordinary, but The Inkey List has a bit more complete formulations."

"An example I always use is their Niacinamide Serum. It always feels more like a Hyaluronic Acid Niacinamide serum, making us feel like we don't need a separate serum for both those key ingredients. It's more well-rounded, finished formulations, and I feel like they kind of cut back on that urge that we get from The Ordinary to feel like we have to buy everything."

"When I said I'm using it twice in a week with a gap day because twenty percent is very very strong. I'm using it basically to see the impact on large open pores and to see chemistry so I can give you a full review. But for extremely large open pores or extremely extremely oily skin, a twenty percent is recommended. The Paula's Choice is very very pricey, so I do believe The Inkey List is a better, more affordable option."

"Steer clear from this, this is gross. Again, niacinamide is a wonderful ingredient, we absolutely love it, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. [...] This one missed the mark. [...] This product goes on smooth but then it almost gets pasty, it gums up and it peels up underneath my other products. It doesn't play well with any other product in the routine and it leaves like this white niacinamide paste."

"I recommend this if you have very oily skin. [...] This can actually reduce the amount of oil on your skin and it is really one of those skincare ingredients that can do so many things. It can calm down acne, brighten the skin, fade dark marks, and really just help fight signs of aging. If you have acne prone skin, active acne, oily skin, acne scars, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or other signs of aging, a niacinamide serum can be a very nice addition to your routine."

"The Inkey List Niacinamide Serum is $7.99 with 10% niacinamide and 1% hyaluronic acid. The feel of this is pretty similar to The Ordinary one, maybe a teeny bit less tacky feeling on the skin. If you're looking for an affordable product that works and is great for the skin, this is another option for you."
