What they flagged

  • Operates as an MLM in many locations
  • Formulas can irritate and damage skin

What the gurus are saying

The Body Shop's MLM structure is flagged as predatory by multiple experts, who explain how it requires sellers to buy inventory upfront and rarely generates profit for most participants. Beyond the business model, reviewers note the products can damage skin. The brand itself feels outdated and culturally irrelevant, leaving little reason to choose it over the newer alternatives on offer today.

"The Body Shop is one of those brands where it feels like they haven't caught up with the times. It gives Avon, right? Like, yeah, you're still around and maybe a certain generation of people use you, but that's the same audience that still use Avon. [...] The Body Shop is something where I think if it went, not a lot of us would miss it. A few of us would be like, oh, I remember The Body Shop. And then be like, oh, well, there's other options."

"I hear they're closing down quite a few of their stores which I think is fine. They used to be like iconic right and I think they just kind of lost their way a little bit. And then they become an MLM."

"I don't like them basically body shop or lo body washes and butters icing I'm not a fan of because I feel it can really damage your skin."
Nay
"My biggest issue with them is that they're an MLM. A lot of their branches are, and do some research on MLMs because MLMs are very insidiously evil to the people working for them. Most people at MLMs will never make any money, and most people actually lose money on the MLMs because most of them require you to purchase a base amount of product to sell, and that's how they make the money. It's a very predatory industry."
