What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently note that Tazorac works faster than tretinoin but carries a steeper irritation and dryness cost, making it better suited for experienced retinoid users. The consensus leans mixed: results are excellent, but the added expense and irritation profile don't justify switching if tretinoin is already working well. One reviewer highlighted that Tazorac's high protein binding may pose lower pregnancy risk than other retinoids, though topical retinoid safety in pregnancy remains uncertain and should be evaluated case-by-case with a doctor.

"Tazorac has more of a punch and can cause more dryness and irritation than tretinoin."

"It acts faster but the end result is the same. Even though it is more expensive compared to tretinoin, it could also be more irritating. It can work faster in some cases but it is more irritating and it is more expensive. It's good, but I wouldn't just stop my tretinoin if you like it and just jump into Tazorac. At the end, both are giving excellent results."

"The thing about Tazorac is that when it is absorbed in the body it's highly protein bound, like 98 percent of it is bound up to proteins in your plasma. The likelihood of it crossing the placenta to the baby is very, very, very low, and there are numerous case reports of perfectly healthy infants delivered in the setting where Mom was accidentally exposed to topical Tazorac. By and large, it's still uncertain as to the safety of topical retinoids during pregnancy, so while on a case-by-case basis it may be actually recommended depending on if the benefits of the topical retinoid for a given skin condition that the pregnant patient may be experiencing outweigh theoretical risks to the baby."
