What the gurus are saying

The experts who reviewed it find Tazorac works faster than tretinoin and delivers strong results, but with a notable trade-off: it tends to cause more dryness and irritation. That means people with sensitive skin may want to start low and go slow, or stick with tretinoin if it's already working for them. On pregnancy, while the drug is highly protein-bound in the body which theoretically lowers placental crossing, the gurus note that topical retinoid safety in pregnancy remains uncertain overall and calls for a case-by-case conversation with a doctor.

"Tazorac has more of a punch and can cause more dryness and irritation than tretinoin."

"It acts faster but the end result is the same. Even though it is more expensive compared to tretinoin, it could also be more irritating. It can work faster in some cases but it is more irritating and it is more expensive. It's good, but I wouldn't just stop my tretinoin if you like it and just jump into Tazorac. At the end, both are giving excellent results."

"The thing about Tazorac is that when it is absorbed in the body it's highly protein bound, like 98 percent of it is bound up to proteins in your plasma. The likelihood of it crossing the placenta to the baby is very, very, very low, and there are numerous case reports of perfectly healthy infants delivered in the setting where Mom was accidentally exposed to topical Tazorac. By and large, it's still uncertain as to the safety of topical retinoids during pregnancy, so while on a case-by-case basis it may be actually recommended depending on if the benefits of the topical retinoid for a given skin condition that the pregnant patient may be experiencing outweigh theoretical risks to the baby."
