What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently praise tazarotene's targeted mechanism and faster results compared to tretinoin, especially for photoaging and inflammatory acne. The core split is tolerability: some reviewers report it is less irritating and allows better consistency, while dermatologists note studies show mixed results, with tazarotene sometimes more irritating despite higher efficacy. Cost and access are recurring friction points, it runs 20-30% more than tretinoin and is harder to obtain outside the US. The consensus is that tazarotene is genuinely effective for specific skin concerns, but the choice between it and tretinoin hinges on individual tolerance, budget, and whether someone is already happy with their current retinoid.

"Tazarotene works by regulating gene expression and it also helps to reduce inflammation. Tazarotene is FDA approved for melasma pigmentation, sun damage, and fine lines. Studies show that it can significantly reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, including from post acne dark marks. And in some trials, it actually performed better than another topical retinoid."

Do Retinoids Cause Skin Darkening? Dermatologist Explains

Should You Use Tretinoin or Tazarotene? A Dermatologist Answers
"Tazarotene has been associated with a higher rate of burning and stinging during the first week of treatment, though this tends to be temporary. Overall, the data suggests that tazarotene and tinianoan are both equally effective. The decision between them really isn't about which one is stronger or more potent. Instead, it's more about which one a patient is more likely to be able to tolerate, taking into account factors like a patient's prior experience with topical retinoids, skin sensitivity, if they have a condition like acne that requires faster clearance, cost, and insurance coverage. Your background skin type also matters. Higher percentages of topical retinoids can be more irritating, and if a patient develops irritation and they have a deeper skin tone, that can lead to hyperpigmentation. So if you have a patient with a deeper skin tone, you may be more inclined to prescribe them a lower percentage, because it's less likely to be irritating and aggravate their hyperpigmentation."

THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene has been held by a lot of the online dermatologists as a new generation elevated anti-aging option."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene is a third generation retinoid, meaning it's one of the newest to hit the market. Whilst it's a newcomer, it does have quite a bit of studies and data to sit behind it to show how effective it is. Tazarotene works in a similar way to tretinoin to boost collagen and elastin production, to increase cellular turnover and help smooth out the skin, but it does so in a subtly different way which can lead to quicker results and in some cases enhance results on certain forms of aging."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene actually works a lot quicker than tretinoin. The reason for this is it actually attaches itself to certain receptors in the skin whereas tretinoin will be a more universal ingredient. Tazarotene works in a more targeted way on specific receptors, which is why it delivers in a much shorter time space than tretinoin. The speed of delivery is really important particularly for people that are new to prescription retinoids. This is probably going to make a difference and it has a significant quicker mechanism of action than tretinoin. Tazarotene is also proven to deliver greater results on specific forms of aging. I'm talking mainly about photoaging. Aging comes in many different forms but exposure to sunlight photoaging is one of the primary reasons we see hyperpigmentation dark spots and of course the emergence of fine lines and wrinkles. Tazarotene and the studies done into it actually proved that it's much more effective against photoaging than tretinoin is."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene is proven to deliver greater results on specific forms of aging, mainly photoaging. Exposure to sunlight is one of the primary reasons we see hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and fine lines and wrinkles. Studies have actually proved that tazarotene is much more effective against photoaging than tretinoin. This is backed up by the FDA, who have approved both tretinoin and tazarotene but for subtly different outcomes and therapeutic uses. The FDA recommends tazarotene specifically for photoaging because these studies show how effective it is. If your aging is primarily triggered by sun exposure and sun damage, tazarotene is going to be delivering you far greater results than tretinoin. Tazarotene is also proven to deliver enhanced benefits when it comes to tackling psoriasis and acne. When it comes to tackling psoriasis and inflammatory acne, tazarotene works far more effectively than tretinoin. If your primary focus is tackling photoaging, then tazarotene is going to be the ingredient for you."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene is proven to deliver enhanced benefits when it comes to tackling psoriasis and acne. When it comes to tackling psoriasis and inflammatory acne, tazarotene just works far more effectively than tretinoin. This has become a bit of a game changer because lots of people were using tretinoin to treat their acne suffering all those side effects and irritation and not always getting the results they wanted. You can get far greater results from tazarotene and that's backed up by the data. If you're using your tretinoin for psoriasis or for acne, particularly inflammatory acne, it's probably worth speaking to your prescriber and shifting over to tazarotene if they approve of that switch."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene evens out the rate of cellular turnover. Yes, it does speed it up, but it also helps to even it out across the skin. This is why it's so effective against psoriasis, which is obviously areas where you have that increased cell turnover. It can help even all of that out. This for me has been a little bit of a game changer because I could never get on top of the shedding and the peeling from tretinoin. However, using tazarotene, I found that those patches of peeling just don't exist anymore. With tretinoin, I was getting peeling relentlessly. It doesn't matter how I used it or how long I was on it, it just never seemed to obey. I haven't had that issue with tazarotene. I find when it comes to increasing cellular turnover, tazarotene is much more strategic in the way it delivers that, and I certainly definitely appreciate it. The benefits of tazarotene are proven and they've been endorsed by the FDA and if you've got specific targeted needs like inflammatory acne, psoriasis or photoaging, it makes sense to make the switch."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"The benefits of Tazarotene are proven and they've been endorsed by the FDA, and if you've got specific targeted needs like inflammatory acne, psoriasis, or photoaging, it makes sense to make the switch. But if you're already using tretinoin and you're happy with the results that you're getting, then it might be worth just sticking with what you know. It can be a little bit more expensive than tretinoin. You can get tretinoin either free or for around the $10 price point, but you're probably going to be looking at around $30 for Tazarotene. If you're buying it outside of the US, then you're looking at around 20% more for the equivalent amount of Tazarotene compared to tretinoin. If you're on a very limited budget, then that's something you're going to want to factor in. It's also quite difficult to access in Europe, though that's improving. If you can't get your hands on Tazarotene, then it really doesn't matter whether it might be the better option for you."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Tazarotene is more expensive. If you're buying it outside of the US, then you're looking at around 20% more for the equivalent amount of tazarotene of what you'll get for tretinoin. So there is a price differential. For me, I don't think it's that significant, but it is definitely there. And if you're on a very limited budget, then that's something you're going to want to factor in. You're also going to look at accessibility. Really easy to access both tretinoin and tazarotene in the US. However, if you're in Europe, it's actually quite difficult to get your hands on. If you can't get your hands on tazarotene, then it really doesn't matter whether it might be the better option for you. It's not an option and that's definitely something you need to bear in mind."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"Before I gave up on prescription retinoids altogether, I spoke to my prescriber. They said try Tazarotene, you might be surprised. And I genuinely was. I feel like I've got advanced results versus using Tretinoin and I'm certainly able to use it more frequently, which is why I'm getting those better results, and it's much less sensitizing on the skin. For me at least, I found Tazarotene to be much less sensitizing than Tretinoin."
THE END OF TRETINOIN - Why Tazarotene Is Taking Over
"For me, moving from tretinoin to tazarotene was the best decision I ever made. It now allows me to be consistent with my high strength retinoids in a way that I wasn't able to be before, which means I'm getting far greater results. Some of that is because I think genuinely tazarotene works better, but a lot of it is because I can now be consistent and consistency is key in skincare, which is why I'm getting those elevated anti-aging results. I'm really happy. I personally am delighted that I made the switch."

"Tazarotene is a third generation retinoid and it binds to the retinoid receptors in your skin with more affinity than tretinoin and it's a little more specific in terms of which receptors it binds to and we have great data when it comes to how it helps with photoaging and acne. The tradeoff is that tazarotene in studies has consistently shown to be more irritating than tretinoin. So it's not that it's ineffective, it's very effective, but often times it is more poorly tolerated. For that reason, it is the general practice of dermatologists to start patients on tretinoin first. But there are going to be a subset of patients who tolerate tazarotene more successfully. If someone is not able to tolerate tretinoin or has a particular interest in starting with tazarotene, I have no qualms about that. You start it the exact same way you start tretinoin. You're looking out for all of the same side effects and sometimes insurance covers one better than the other."

"Tazarotene is more irritating in general than tretinoin. When I start a patient on it, I usually get more complaints of flaking, purging, and irritation starting on tazarotene than I do with tretinoin. I almost never would start someone on tazarotene. It would always be a lower strength tretinoin or something like that, which is another newer specific retinoid. There is some nuance here especially when it comes to pregnancy. It is one of the few, if not the only one, that's category X."

TRETINOIN VS. TAZAROTENE? Which is the most POWERFUL retinoid on earth? | Doctorly Investigates
"Tazarotene is outside of that conversion model. Once you get to the active form of any of these retinoids it works on specific receptors, either RAR receptors or RXR receptors. Tazarotene is very similar and a little bit more balanced in the receptors that it binds to. Both are acting on these nuclear receptors that exist in the nucleus of our cell and they're specifically made for retinoids."

"Tazarotene is very effective. High strength Tazarotene is more effective than low strength tretinoin. When you compare them head to head, Tazarotene was significantly more effective than tretinoin in treating acne, and they had equal or equivalent tolerability. When I do switch to Tazarotene after tretinoin, I generally see an improvement over the tretinoin. I don't know if that's because it's binding to different receptors and your skin has gotten used to the tretinoin or whatever, but there seems to be in my clinical experience a breakthrough when switching to Tazarotene."

"I do find that in some people who say hey I've been on Tretinoin for 5 years and I'm not seeing improvement, I find that switching them to Tazarotene they're generally pretty happy because they'll undergo that peeling process again and they'll start to notice oh wait maybe this thing is starting to work for me again. In the studies it's hard to know whether or not one is more effective than the other when it comes to photoaging, but I do think that Tazarotene is stronger in some ways and can be more effective in some cases, but otherwise the studies aren't really clear. When it comes to tolerability, they've done some tolerability studies comparing Tazarotene to Tretinoin and Tazarotene to Adapalene, and you know it really does seem to depend study to study. You'll find some studies that say that Tazarotene is more irritating than Tretinoin, which Tretinoin is then more irritating than Adapalene, and then I've also seen some studies, a specific tolerability study that show that Tazarotene was more tolerable than Tretinoin."

TRETINOIN VS. TAZAROTENE? Which is the most POWERFUL retinoid on earth? | Doctorly Investigates
"Tazarotene seems to be the opposite in terms of photosensitivity. I would say it very clearly does make you more sensitive to the sun. It's even on the package insert. Photo protection and sun protection is paramount when using tazarotene. Although it's always important, this one certainly will make you more likely to get a burn. In the mechanism of tazarotene, there are a few things that happen that make it effective in treating psoriasis. There's a downregulation or an inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase, which leads to a kind of growth of your skin cells, and that's why it's helpful in treating psoriasis. It also downregulates something called epidermal growth factor receptor. Epidermal growth factor receptor is a receptor that once it's triggered, leads to epidermal growth. Tazarotene will actually thicken your epidermis layer of the skin, but it does it in a way that normalizes it so you don't get these abnormal cells like you do in psoriasis. So it's exactly what you want when you're treating acne or you're treating anti-aging. But what I would say is that if you're somebody who's decided to invest a lot of money in a growth factor product, tazarotene and that product could cancel each other out because if it downregulates your epidermal growth factor receptor, there won't be a receptor for these growth factors to bind to."

"With tazarotene there's a bunch of early studies that said it was around as irritating as tretinoin and adapalene but then later studies and like every dermatologist you talk to and everyone who's tried tazarotene they will all tell you that it's more irritating. It's kind of sad to read through the studies in date order and just sort of see all the hope just slowly fade."
