What the gurus are saying

This serum can develop stability issues, reportedly turning brown or orange within a few months. Those without that experience praised the gentle vitamin C derivative and fruit AHAs for brightening sensitive skin, and noted it works quickly despite being a derivative, which typically takes much longer. Vogue Beauty Awards named it runner up in the Skin Tech Wonder category.

"I love it, I absolutely love this formula. [...] This is the Violet-C Brightening Serum by Tatcha, and it's a vitamin C derivative formulation. [...] If you're someone that has sensitive skin and you can't use L-ascorbic acid, the purest form of vitamin C, then this would be a great option to look into because vitamin C derivatives in general [...] are more gentle on the skin. They may take longer to see results, but consistency is key. [...] This one works pretty much right away from my experience with it, and it's probably because of the additional ingredients in here. The vitamin C derivative that is in here is ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, which is going to brighten and help target fine lines and wrinkles and protect the skin from everyday pollution. There's also a lot of different fruit AHAs in here, which are more gentle, they're not glycolic and lactic acid."

"They had a vitamin C serum that I absolutely loved, picked it up the first run it was amazing, then after I finished it a few months later went to repurchase it and it's orange, it's dark brown, it's awful. So that's why I'm paranoid about buying vitamin C serums because their vitamin C is unstable and it goes bad fast. There's only a few brands at this point I really trust to have it fresh and Tatcha isn't one of them. But a lot of people have had very good luck with it. My friend the last couple times she's bought it it's been already oxidized and going bad."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
