What they liked

  • Gentle exfoliation with dissolved rice granules
  • Foams up with a tiny amount
  • Luxurious texture and fragrance

What they flagged

Nothing. None of the experts who reviewed it raised a problem.

    What the gurus are saying

The rice granules dissolve as you work them in, delivering a soft physical exfoliate that gurus found genuinely gentle despite having a bit more texture than a standard cleanser. What stands out is how the enzymes work alongside the granules to lift dead skin without harsh scrubbing, making it feel more like a treatment cleanser than a daily wash. The luxurious texture and packaging earn praise as a shower staple worth coming back to.

"It's definitely a gentle cleanser that will help to deeply cleanse your skin without overly stripping it or drying it out. That being said, this one is $40, which is really expensive for a cleanser. Looking at the ingredient list, I definitely think that it is very overpriced. But a good formula is a good formula as long as it's properly cleansing your skin, which it definitely is."

"The Tatcha Rice Wash Soft Cream Cleanser is still by far my most used cleanser. It has a little bit of exfoliation to it from rice power and enzymes, so it's gentle, and I keep it in my shower to wash my face since I don't use it around the eyes."

"The Tatcha Rice Wash Skin Softening Cleanser is another one of my favorites. [...] I accidentally fell in love with it because I kept it in my shower. [...] The enzymes in here are so incredible. This has a little bit more of a grip so it's beautiful on the skin, but it's a really, really soft, gentle exfoliate. I feel like it really helps get rid of dead skin on the surface and it's just gentle. The [...] little rice granules do dissolve as you work it into the skin and it just feels really nice on the skin. I love it so much. [...] It's nice to have like [...] a little bit more of a treatment cleanser in the shower that I love using."

"This is the cleanser that lives in my shower. It is my favorite gentle exfoliating cleanser. This is from Tatcha - it's the Rice Wash - and it has the most beautiful texture. I've gone through three of these at this point and it is so great. I actually might need to pick up another one myself because this one's almost out. I do like to rotate my skincare, especially cleansers depending on what my skin needs that day. But when it comes to a classic staple that lives in my shower, this is it. I've had this in my shower for about two years now. I love it. It's so good."

"This one is from Tatcha. It is expensive, but you use so little of it. It's such a luxurious experience and your skin feels great. You've got to have a gentle enough cleanser, and this is gentle in such a way that I really feel your skin looks better after using it long term."

    Best & Worst VALUE Skincare!
"This is my best value pick for luxury cleansers. I've always liked Tatcha's cleansers, I don't know what they get so right in cleansing but they get something right, it feels like a fancy ritual. You use the tiniest amount, basically a pea size, it foams up and gives this beautiful light exfoliating experience. It really does smell incredible and it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin, and I feel like I'm never going to finish the bottle because cleansers just last forever. The one thing to keep in mind is that it's still a wash off step, so if you want certain ingredients to actually stay on your skin, this isn't the step to do it in."

"My favorite cleanser brand as a whole of all time. I love love love Tatcha Harper cleansers by far my favorite thing that she makes. I've used them for years to the point now I could say over a decade."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
