What the gurus are saying

This cream earns consistent praise for feeling rich and nourishing without the greasiness or heaviness that can come with thicker moisturizers, and for soothing redness and strengthening a compromised barrier. The gel-like texture spreads easily and leaves skin with a dewy glow that works equally well under morning makeup or as a nighttime treatment. One thing to keep in mind: the price point is high, though a little product goes a long way, and the gurus suggest watching for holiday sales to stretch your budget further.

"This is my favorite splurge moisturizer of all time. This is the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Serum, and it is divine. If you have redness-prone skin, easily irritated skin, you want something that truly feels luxurious, this is it."

"It is in one of my absolute favorite moisturizers of all time for sensitive skin, the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Serum. I once heard this moisturizer described as a vanilla pudding texture and now I can't unhear and see that. But it is such a calming, beautiful moisturizer that I usually recommend using in a nighttime skincare routine as the name of the product suggests. And it has this beautiful EGCG in there as well."

"I've spoken so much about this on this channel on my Instagram on TikTok because I just think this is such an amazing amazing moisturizer. That texture is divine. If you have sensitive skin, like truly a Goldilocks moisturizer like not so heavy and rich and thick that it feels suffocating on the skin, not so light that it sort of loses its presence. It's like right down the middle. It's amazing for sensitive skin, it's fragrance free. If you pair it with the cleansing balm and you have sensitive skin, oh like such a beautiful match. Tatcha really nails it with textures for me and I'm such a texture person. Of course it has to have good ingredients but it really does have to feel good on the skin and do what it's supposed to, and I just feel like that moisturizer totally nails it."

"I'm obsessed with the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair. I can't even open the jar without being like oh my God it's amazing. It's like vanilla pudding, so beautiful. It's a serum and cream. The one thing I will say is that Tatcha tends to have pretty good sales around the holidays, so I don't know if I would pick this up at the Sephora sale. I might wait till the Tatcha sale because you might be able to get some other goodies with that."

Dermatologist Shares Why Expensive Skincare Might Be Worth It | Dr. Sam Ellis
"The Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Cream is very different than the Skin Better moisturizer. This is much thicker, much more occlusive, really there for that barrier support and repair, but I love this so much. It's one of the few moisturizers I can use when my skin is stinging or irritated from my retinoid, and it doesn't cause any problems for me. I like to leave this on my bedside table and I put it on at night after I've done all of my other skincare. Even if I've put a moisturizer on in my nighttime skincare routine, when I get in bed, if my skin is feeling a little bit finicky or it's hurting, I will go in with this Tatcha cream afterward, and it is beautiful. If you're looking for a thicker, richer moisturizer that doesn't have any type of waxy texture, which to me is kind of a turn-off in some of those thicker moisturizers and creams, I totally recommend you try this."
Best Moisturizers for Dry Skin in Winter According to a Dermatologist (Neutrogena, CeraVe, & More!)
"I was never going to try this because it is a little bit spendy, but I got it sent to me when I made a big purchase order from Sephora, so I had a sample to use for a couple of weeks and it's really good. Out of all the moisturizers I'm talking about today, this one feels the most luxurious on the skin. It goes on so silky and smooth and it doesn't really feel heavy even though it feels incredibly hydrating on the skin. Also, as someone who has sensitive skin and is rosacea prone, I was a little apprehensive to try it, but it said that it had calming properties and I really felt that when I put it on. Like my skin felt soothed. I'm really tempted to buy this because it was great when I was using it, and the product is so beautiful, like you want to use it. It calls to you, and that's important because you have to use a moisturizer regularly to see the best benefits, and some of that is just having a skincare item that inspires you to want to use it. For this Tatcha product, like I'm all in, I want it every day."

"I'm using the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair. This is a beautiful serum and cream. I love it so much she's almost gone and I'm so sad. I heard someone once described this as like vanilla pudding texture. It's a little bit more creamy though when it rubs down and in, and I think this is just so unique, so special. If I could have like one moisturizer, like one really good hydrating moisturizer forever, it would probably be this one. I think the only downside is the price point—it's pricey."
Dermatologist's Favorite Skincare Products of 2022: Cleansers, Moisturizers, Sunscreens, & More!
"This stuff is special. The texture of this is so beautiful. It's a serum in cream, so when you take it out of the package it feels almost like a wetter cream, and it kind of has that feel of a gel cream, but then it smooths into this beautiful thin serum that is still somewhat occlusive but doesn't feel oily in any way. It's so nice to use. I crave it and I look forward to putting it on my face."

"This is my favorite cream from the brand because it does a little bit of everything. It's great for signs of aging, it's hydrating, it's repairing, but also it can help to reduce the look of facial redness. It has ceramics and hyaluronic acid, there's Mondo grassroot extract which helps to balance your skin's microbiome, and there's Japanese Indigo extract which helps to soothe the skin and help to repair a compromised skin barrier. This is very rich and this will give your skin that glow. I do love this for nighttime, and even though they say this is an overnight repair cream, you can still use this in the morning, and I have many times and it does sit nicely underneath sunscreen and makeup. It's even more glowy and I love it in the morning because I just love that finish when it shines through my makeup. I just love that natural glow."

"It's very rich and your skin will have a little bit of that shiny look to it because this is designed to really repair that dry flaky irritated skin. I like to keep this at night time and sometimes I will just use this with other hydrating serums or I will pair this up with some type of active ingredient that could cause some irritation a few days later. It's exceptional. Yes, it's quite expensive but a little bit goes a long way. It does have this gel type of texture so it spreads nicely and it is quite lightweight but again it is very satisfying to use and it's very rich and it does the job really well. So if you're not looking for that rich heavy white cream then you possibly might like this because again it has that gel texture that just keeps your skin so moisturized. I do have a backup already in my linen closet so I will be pulling that out very soon but even if I didn't I would have picked up another one because again this is really nice especially during the winter months."

"The Indigo Overnight Repair Serum in Cream has that serum creamy texture, very lightweight but extremely moisturizing and very rich, so your skin will have a glow. It's best for nighttime because of the texture. [...] I like this because it really helps to tone down on redness, and [...] it also helps to repair and strengthen the skin barrier while keeping it extremely moisturized. A little bit goes a long way, you honestly don't need a lot of this product. It spreads like a dream. I do put this on top of tretinoin and sometimes when I'm using active ingredients, I like using a cream like this on top to really nourish my skin."

"Their Indigo Repair Cream is like an overnight sleeping mask, if you will, that you can layer on over your moisturizer or just use on your own as your moisturizer. It's also fragrance free too, so for those a little bit more sensitive skin looking for a good rich nourishing luxurious nighttime moisturizer, I highly recommend checking that one out."

Sephora Savings Event 2023 Dermatologist Top Picks | Dr Jenny Liu
"This is by far my favorite moisturizer from Tatcha for a few reasons. Number one, you can think of it as like a serum and moisturizer in one, so it's almost like a treatment in a moisturizer. If you want to simplify your routine this is great. It can also work as an overnight repair or sleeping mask, or you can use it like a moisturizer. I also love the fact that it is very elegantly textured and has wonderful ingredients to really calm and soothe dry irritated skin. The texture I think is really suitable for everyone for nighttime use. Ingredient-wise it contains Japanese Lily extract along with Mugwort extract, basically ingredients that are soothing and anti-inflammatory. It also contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and overall it really helps to support the skin microbiome and support a healthy skin barrier. What I love most is just the elegant texture. It's creamy, it's fragrance-free, it's a lightweight cream but it's also very nourishing and supportive without looking and feeling greasy and heavy at the same time. So I really love this when my skin needs a pick-me-upper at night."

"For $81 you can get a 3 oz of the Dewy Skin Cream and a 1.7 oz of the Indigo Overnight Repair. These two can pair together to help restore the skin's barrier and just be all around indulgent. Tatcha's products also work really well for people."

"It's soothing and nourishing, you put it on and it feels slightly richer than the Skin Rocks moisturizer. It's richer but it's not greasy and it's not heavy and it doesn't make me wake up with whiteheads as some richer moisturizers do."

"The Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Cream usually retails for 92 dollars, so it's a good time to test it out. It's a product that I like, especially if you're in a dry climate. I have the old one and I bought their newest one. The old one used to look blue and the newer one looks different. The newer formulation is slightly lighter and more elegant, whereas the old one was a little bit chunkier, but I really did appreciate the old one. It's tried and true."

"I also finished the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Cream. This was sent to me in PR and I finished it. It's not bad. It's a very thick balm. It's really good if you're dealing with very dry skin and you're looking for something almost kind of like slugging. This will get you there. If you're somebody who's interested in doing slugging and you don't get along with petrolatum, you want an alternative, some sort of balm or ointment, try this, although it is ungodly expensive. I don't necessarily think it's worth the price."

"I'm almost finished with the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair. It's really heavy and unwieldy, and when you get down to a third of the product left, it's kind of hard to get out. The weighty packaging makes you feel like you're getting a lot, but in reality you're not getting that much."

"The Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair, which they market as a sleep mask but it's really just a nighttime moisturizer, is insanely overpriced. I typically don't recommend Tatcha products because they mostly have fragrance, but this one does not have fragrance. Objectively speaking, it's actually pretty good. But is it superior to an affordable drugstore moisturizer? No, not at all. But it's not bad."

"Tatcha sent me this - it's their Indigo Overnight Repair. I think it's a sleep mask or night mask or something like that. It's actually fragrance free, so I have been trying it out. So far it's okay, but I don't know, I would not go out and plunk down - I am sure it's really expensive. I would not say it's necessarily any more magical than any other moisturizer. It is a nice thick kind of consistency, so if you have really dry skin or a lot of irritation you might like this."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Source: DermNet

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
