What the gurus are saying

This essence earns consistent praise for its featherweight texture and ability to prep skin without leaving a heavy feel underneath, making it particularly appealing to those wanting gentle hydration before serums and treatments. However, experts genuinely split on whether the price tag delivers: some dermatologists find it genuinely plumping and helpful for perimenopausal skin, while others felt it delivered minimal visible results despite the $110 cost, and a few noted the scent or lack of efficacy as drawbacks. The short, clean ingredient list appeals, but cost-conscious shoppers may want to explore lighter-priced alternatives with similar fermented botanicals.

"It's a wonderful uh essence. It's really expensive. If it were like 30 bucks, I'd probably still buy it. Um but um really nice, really, really lovely, really light texture, but yeah, there's just so many other options"

"I really like this one at first when I was able to get it in sets and not pay so much. It's got rice ferment, green tea, Okinawa algae, and in my opinion today, compared to back in the day when this first came out, I personally don't think this one is as relevant anymore. For me I found an alternative that's $22, and that's way less expensive. The one thing that is nice about the Tatcha is the short ingredient list, but then again we're paying $110, it's a lot of money."

"I've used Tatcha for probably a couple years now and they make some of my favorite hydrating essentials. I like their essence. It's really lightweight, absorbs really quickly. It preps my skin for the serums and treatments that follow. It kind of helps boost your skincare treatment with its 100% hadasei, it's like a trio of fermented Japanese superfoods. They're going to help hydrate, resurface, soften, and plump your skin. It definitely helps me hydrate and plump the skin. I apply my vitamin C on top of it. It really helps prep the skin for my next step. It helps improve some of the absorption of the other products in your routine as well. So if you're somebody who is perimenopausal or postmenopausal, this might be a good one to introduce. The key ingredients here are the Akita rice, the Okinawa algae, and the Uji green tea."

"I love it because it's super lightweight. I feel like it hydrates, but it doesn't leave me that hydrating feeling completely. I can still apply my moisturizer on top without feeling like there's anything underneath. She preps my skin, boosts my hydration, makes my actives almost feel like a little bit better going on. The Tatcha Luminous Skin Softener contains 100% hadi a trio of fermented Japanese superfoods that are proven to hydrate, resurface, soften, and somewhat plump your skin. So it will hydrate, it will plump a little bit. It makes it look kind of radiant, not too dewy, not too shiny, and it helps my subsequent steps absorb and work a little bit better. The key ingredients in this one are the Aikita rice, the Okinawa algae, and the uji green tea."

"Personally for me the essence isn't great, it's one of the more expensive essences on the market but definitely not one of the best, in theory it sounds nice, it's got all those fermented ingredients alongside camellia and green tea, but it falls a bit flat, it didn't do anything for me, and even worse it's got a weird smell to it, it smells like somebody licked you and then you let their saliva dry on your face."

"I use the Tatcha Luminous Skin Softener a lot and I could not literally see any difference anything on my skin. Right now I'm at a point when it fit into a new routine, it's finished and I'm not going to repurchase it because honestly the product is so expensive and I did not see any results from it."

"I like to apply this to a cotton ball on my face. It's a plumping skin softener with a concentration of pure micronutrients that softens and plumps skin with deep hydration while maximizing the performance of the tatcha skincare ritual. This is a 95 dollar essence. It is nice and it does have excellent ingredients such as some ferments, some yeast extracts and some green tea. It is fantastic but I don't think this is worth 95 so I always roll my eyes at Tatcha. They're cruelty free, yes. Do they have vegan options, yes. Are the formulas decent, yes. But to me they're nothing revolutionary."
