What the gurus are saying

The experts confirm that sunscreen ranks at the top tier for protecting skin and slowing signs of aging, but with an important caveat: it is not a complete shield. Sunscreen lets some UV through, meaning people can still tan and sustain UV damage while wearing it, so the gurus treat it like a seatbelt, essential, but only effective as part of a broader routine that includes protective clothing, shade-seeking, and limiting time in direct sun. For most people, daily sunscreen use is the right move; wearing it to bed or in very low-UV settings is generally unnecessary.

"Sunscreen is not a complete shield and does not prevent tanning entirely. You can absolutely still tan while wearing sunscreen because it allows some UV through. Sunscreen is not sufficient on its own; you need to combine it with other sun-protective behaviors to fully protect your skin from the sun, including wearing sun-protective clothing, seeking shade, and not laying out for prolonged periods with only sunscreen on. Sunscreens are pretty good at protecting against UVB rays that primarily drive burning, but UVA is intense and you're still getting some of that. The tricky part is that sunscreens can give you a false sense of protection, making you more comfortable and likely to stay out much longer, resulting in more UVA exposure. This is one reason early sunscreens were associated with more skin cancers because they weren't as good at UVA protection and people stayed out longer due to this false sense of security. The messaging around sun protection should be that sunscreen is like a seatbelt: you can't just put it on and behave recklessly because it won't completely protect you."

"I am a very avid, very strict user of sunscreen which is a collagen protecting ingredient, and you know that I don't just stop at sunscreen but I'm also a big advocate for hats, protective clothing, sometimes even sun patches. Those are all good holistic habits for building a routine that is going to keep your progress going with preventing the signs of aging on the skin, for keeping your collagen stimulation up, preventing the fine lines and wrinkles."

"When you start looking at things like dose, how much you're getting, how much UV, how much parabens, then you can start to see what does and doesn't make a difference, and of course this changes depending on your skin as well and your susceptibility to some. But there are very very few people in the world who are sun sensitive enough to have to wear sunscreen to bed. Wearing sunscreen definitely belongs on the top tier."
