What the gurus are saying

This cream earns praise for its blend of squalane, glycerin, and three types of ceramides that work together to hydrate and soften the skin. However, it contains an ingredient with moderate comedogenic potential and several botanical extracts without much clinical research behind them, so those with oily, acne-prone, or sensitive skin may want to patch-test behind the ear first to see how their skin responds before committing to regular use.

"Sunday Riley has this ICE Ceramide Moisturizing Cream, it's [...] really thick and nice. I love that one. That's more of like a nighttime moisturizer or like deep deep winter moisturizer. For me, I have oily skin that's kind of getting a little drier as I age. But if you have dry skin, that might be like the perfect moisturizer for you."

"The ICE Ceramide Moisturizer is really nice. I could only use it in the winter time, not even during the hot months at night because it's a lot with a big old heavy cream, you know, you're trying to sweat or whatever. But that ICE Ceramide Moisturizer is really nice. With my oily skin it has to be in the winter time when I use that."

"I actually really like this product. The positives are it's got squalane and glycerin in it, which are fantastic emollients. It's got three different ceramides in it: NP, EOP, and AP. So it's a very hydrating product. The only one thing, little tiny thing I'd say, it's got an ingredient called Chondrus crispus in it, which is about five out of ten on the comedogenic scale. So maybe I might avoid this if you've got oily, acne-prone skin. The other thing to note is it has a lot of root extracts. Now, majority of root extracts are very good, but there's actually not much clinical data when it comes to root extracts. So that's why I'm always a little bit cautious. The reason being, we don't really know how you're going to react. And if you have quite sensitive skin and you don't know what you're allergic to, it might be something that you would want to avoid. So always patch test it behind your ear."

"It's very nice but I like their tital moisturizer the best. I don't know what's going on with that brand as a whole, they haven't really released a whole lot lately."

"She says that this is the key to dry skin. Let's take a look at the ingredients and see if they would be great for dry skin. We have an extract blend as our first ingredient, red algae. This is actually good. We have squalane, some sugarcane glycerin, some sunflower. We have coconut fruit extract, ceramide NP and EOP. I'm still not going to be purchasing Sunday Riley for the current time being, but this actually looks really good. Specifically, what I'm seeing are those ceramides. Ceramides are essential to our skin function. Our stratum corneum is like 50 percent ceramides, and sometimes if you have dry skin, it's a little bit less, which is why putting them back in there is great. Red algae is phenomenal. Algae is fantastic for skin care and an antioxidant. This actually looks like a bomb ass ingredients list. I love the melon."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
