What they flagged

  • Flavor is a common irritant in lip balm

What the gurus are saying

Flavor and fragrance are built into this lip balm, they're common irritants and can trigger lip-licking, defeating protection. Some recommend it for those wanting flavored lip protection, but those wary of irritants prefer Sun Bum's fragrance-free mineral option. For those unbothered by fragrance, the 80-minute water resistance and chemical formula without white cast appeal.

"It's water resistant 80 minutes which is a really good feature in an SPF lip balm because it's really being tested to stay on your lips with chewing, talking, licking your lips, all of those things, sipping on drinks. So I value that. This does obviously have fragrance in it because it's watermelon, so that's a possible irritant. It's a chemical sunscreen, it shouldn't leave a white cast. If you're not bothered by fragrance in lip balms, that'd be a good one to try out."

"So yeah, this is really good. Looks like Sun Bum has some new SPF lip balms, or they just repackaged them. They all have flavor, which is a common irritant in lip balm, so be aware of that. Sun Bum makes a fragrance-free, flavorant-free SPF lip balm that's a mineral lip balm. I really, really like it. It comes in a black tube, but I'm not seeing it here."

"Sun Bum has a mineral SPF lip balm that they never have here at Target, it's really good. But here they have the Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30. You know, the fragrance flavorant are common reasons for lip balms to be irritating, but otherwise, you know, this is an option."

"It does smell nice, wow, look how oily it is. I don't like this at all. It tastes like banana, it tastes good, that's a problem. That's a big problem, just like with the sugar lip scrubs it has you licking your lips, it's creating a big problem. I don't like it at all. It's a no for me."

"Sun Bum is one I recommend for those who want flavoring in their lip protection because if you're really bothered by the taste I think you have like banana or coconut flavors so that way it's not as poor tasting."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
