What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists view spironolactone as medically proven and effective for hormonal acne and androgen-related concerns in women, especially those with PCOS, and emphasize a strong safety record despite decades-old cancer concerns. The consistent trade-off is tolerability: while generally well tolerated, it commonly causes breast tenderness and menstrual irregularities, and can lower blood pressure, making it unsuitable for some patients. It pairs well with birth control but is contraindicated in pregnancy and males. Gurus frame the benefits against these side effects as favorable when treating the psychological burden of hormonal skin and hair conditions.

"Spironolactone is a blood pressure medication that can also help with hormonal breakouts to minimize the breakouts along the jawline. And it can be very, very helpful as well. But if your blood pressure runs on the low side, you have to be careful with that. Plus, there are other side effects that some people just don't necessarily want, like breast enlargements, and I have lived that experience as well. Hence why I could not be on spironolactone."

"Spironolactone has been around for decades. If there was a link linking it to cancer, that link would have been shown by now through the data, but that link has never been proven and there has been no increased associated risk with any sort of GYN cancer, meaning breast cancer or uterine cancer. The benefits far outweigh the risks, especially when you're dealing with a patient who is having increased hair growth or unwanted hair loss or even hormonal acne, and you're trying to balance that psychological impact and burden of a disease versus the risk of treating them with a medication."

"Spironolactone is another prescription medication, this one is oral. It is a blood pressure medication as well that has been shown to have anti-androgen effects. It blocks the testosterone receptor on your hair follicles. Women especially benefit from this very much so when they have hormonal acne, but it has been shown to have promising benefits for hair as well. It does decrease your androgen production overall in your body, so you have to be careful again if you're trying to get pregnant. You are not allowed to be on this. They most recently came out with a spironolactone cream also known as Winlevi."

"There's also spironolactone for women. There are medically proven treatments that are safe. They're accessible and often more effective when they're used early."

"Spironolactone is an oral medication that can be particularly effective for acne in general, including acne breakouts on the back. However, it's not something that we prescribe to males because it does have several adverse effects in males, such as breast development."

The Best Supplement For PCOS And Acne | Myo-Inositol
"Spironolactone is an anti-androgen so it helps with the androgen piece of things but it also can help improve insulin responsiveness and it's nice because it kind of complements birth control pills so they can be used together. Spironolactone works as an anti-androgen and it can complement the birth control pills and it will help to improve acne, it helps to improve hirsutism and it also helps to improve androgenetic alopecia as well as reduce oiliness. These are all things that have to do with androgen excess and to a certain extent spironolactone helps with the insulin resistance and cardiometabolic abnormalities in PCOS. Spironolactone is generally well tolerated but it does have some side effects. It can cause breast tenderness and menstrual irregularities, probably the most common, and with PCOS you already have problems with the menstrual cycle so that might not be acceptable for everyone."

Hair Loss Shampoo That Actually Works?
"Spironolactone is an oral medication that can be prescribed to women to help limit androgen signaling at the hair follicle. Especially in women who have PCOS, they often can get some improvement in their androgenetic alopecia with spironolactone. Spironolactone also can target and improve some of the other hair issues that women with PCOS often deal with, namely hirsutism and male pattern hair growth."
