What the gurus are saying

Ivermectin's anti-inflammatory power and ability to kill demodex mites make it remarkably effective for rosacea and perioral dermatitis, especially when other ingredients haven't worked. The major caveat is cost: at $600-plus per tube, most insurance won't cover it, though generic and compounded versions are now available at lower prices. That price barrier can be a real hurdle, so exploring those alternatives may be worth asking your dermatologist about.

"Ivermectin cream, also known as Soolantra, was originally developed for rosacea, but it is very effective for perioral dermatitis. It works because of its anti-inflammatory effects."

"Ivermectin is wild and can work really well because it actually treats the mites and the mites have a pretty prominent role in especially the acne form of rosacea. Some people have tried a lot of other ingredients and they try ivermectin and they're like, 'Wow, it wipes out those demodex mites.' And then the rosacea gets much much better. The problem with this ingredient is the crazy cost. For a tube of cream, it is still $600 plus. No healthcare insurance company wants to cover these things. But there are now some generic forms and you can also get them compounded."

"Soolantra, which is the trade name, the generic name is ivermectin, is an antiparasitic that also kills Demodex. I often times prescribe all three and I tell patients go plop ploop ploop, put three dots, mix mix mix, apply to face twice a day, and it really does help a lot with people with rosacea to help keep all of it at bay. And you can use this long term. You can use this when you're pregnant."
