What the gurus are saying

The scent is the real standout here, with most gurus praising it as addictive and summery, though a few note it works best as a fragrance layer rather than worn directly on skin. The cream itself moisturises well and suits dry skin, but the lightweight texture means you'll go through it quickly at a high price point, so the value depends on whether the scent and nourishment justify the cost for you. One thing to know: no body cream alone will shift cellulite, despite the marketing.

"This is not my favorite Sol de Janeiro. The Bum Bum Cream is not my favorite scent. It smells good. I like it though. It's very like boom. Like it's not I don't hate it, but I don't love it."

Walmart Really TRIED IT with These Sol de Janeiro DUPES
"I do actually have the Boom Boom Cream. The Boom Boom Cream smells way better than this. The Boom Boom Cream is far far far better smelling than this."

"I got to say this, the longevity on this one definitely hits a lot better even though I like the subtlety of this fragrance more. If we could do like a 62 light then I would like it, but honestly I've been wearing this because I bought this specifically for the video and I was like I'm going to keep it, so I have been wearing this a lot more."

"The brand's new iconic Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is a visibly firming body cream [...] with a unique scent of pistachio, salted caramel, and vanilla. Formulated with guarana extract to help tighten the skin, kapuku butter to lock in moisture, and Brazilian nut oil for antioxidant protection. [...] The combination of the addictive scent, rich texture, and beach body confidence marketing strategy really helped make it an instant hit with skincare enthusiasts. [...] I don't love the smell of this product, but when I pick it up [...] in a shop, I'm going to sniff the tester, and then I always have another sniff. I don't want it on me; I'd have it on a candle."

"For me personally I don't find myself using many of their products, their fragrances are a bit Body Shop circa 2010, but I get why people like them. I do not have a best product from this brand but I will say their body cream does the job it has to do and they smell good in the process."

"Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream. What a gorgeous fragrance. This is beautiful. This is great if you love vanilla. If you like the bright, you know, if you like the vanilla kind of vibes, this is great. And this is very nourishing for the body. Yes, you can use it to layer a vanilla fragrance. It'll last better. But like a nice body butter, this is also great."

"It is not cheap. This product is so expensive and because it's a more lightweight moisturizing cream, you end up using a lot on your body, which means you'll go through this product really quickly. It is very expensive. [...] Unless you want to pay that price point, I would say this product is definitely not worth the hype."

"Sol de Janeiro has a bum bum set and they're not full size, but this is decent. This is $32 for 1.7 fluid ounces of the bum bum cream and some extras. This is good if you're not allergic. I tried their pink spray and I broke out in a rash, and I looked at Amazon reviews and I'm not the only one. So I don't love it, but if you know someone who loves their butt, loves a good bum bum cream, or loves the smell of this, at $30 it's a pretty good deal."

"I have a little Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream and this is literally one of my favorite scents from this brand. I have all three and I alternate every other day or whatever depending on what I feel like wearing and this is what's on my skin pretty much every single day. I love how the scent lingers. I get a lot of compliments when I wear this one. These are very very moisturizing as well, it's like a body butter, so if you have dry skin these really do the job. It really helps to repair the skin and again I just love that scent. These are a little bit pricey, they are pretty pricey, but in my opinion they're worth it."

"The Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is just nice because it comes in a large tub, it's easy to kind of dip your hands into, and it smells really summery and fresh. I imagine Brazil to smell like at the beach. You can use that on your body after you've used a dry brush to really get that fluid moving. No cream alone is going to get rid of your cellulite at all, so just FYI before you go and start wasting a ton of money."

"This is really for the body, it's supposed to help tighten and absorb. It may have a nice consistency. If it's light, it's really light. I feel like I may have wanted it to be a bit creamier, but it feels good."

"I actually like the scent of the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, it's kind of a vanilla amber tropical scent and it's a long lasting scent that lingers. But I don't like it enough that I would incorporate this into my regular routine, I don't like it enough to buy it, this was a free sample. It's also thinner in consistency and quite a bit more expensive than the Costco dupe."

"I was obsessed with the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream years ago. They have these cute little sets on cult that are 30 quid each. Brilliant for any teens or tweens in your house, but also it's not just for young people. The products are so good. I've actually got the body oil of this range right now and I'm loving it. The smells are amazing. You get a little set with the cream, the shower gel, and the body mist. The scent's so good. The shower oil is incredible. Me and Jack have been using it. These little sets are so good. I actually do have this for a young person in my life this Christmas. They're not just a body mist brand and they're not just a bum bum cream brand. The products are so good."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
