What they flagged

  • Doesn't deliver the promised brightening

What the gurus are saying

Brightening claims don't match real results for most who tried it. Dr Dray ranks it among her favorites this year and highlights its anti-inflammatory promise, but CYoung saw no brightening effect despite the brand's claims it would outperform vitamin C without the irritation, and found it works better as an everyday moisturizing serum for sensitive skin. The consensus leans mixed: it hydrates, but the brightening hype doesn't hold up in practice.

"According to SKIN1004, this brightening ingredient is supposed to work really well, they say it's more effective than vitamin C and [...] not as aggressive, so I agree, if you have sensitive skin and are a little afraid of vitamin C you can try this out. But I didn't see any brightening at all. I think you can try it out as an everyday moisturizing serum, but if you're expecting brightening, I don't think it'll work that much, so I don't think this one is worth the hype."

"I do like it. I think it's a nice [Centella] serum. Is it the very best [Centella] serum in all of the brands in all of K beauty that you could possibly buy? I will be honest with you, dead honest, no, I don't think it's the best."

"Unless you just love centella, when it comes to Skin1004, I wouldn't bother with their Centella Asiatica Serum. I'd buy one of the other serums that has squalane as standard."

"What I like about this ampoule in particular is that it contains polyglutamic acid, which is super hydrating but also creates a lightweight film on the skin to help reduce transepidermal water loss, along with ceramides [...] and niacinamide. It has a variety of peptides that can help with moisture retention, [...] plus glutathione, an interesting topical antioxidant. [...] It's still super, super lightweight, thin, and watery in texture, but there's a little bit of grip to it."

"I've tried out a lot of serums this year and this is one of my favorites from this year so far. [...] I have a lot of them here and I kind of alternate but this is the one that I want to keep using because I really liked it. [...] I really love this paired with the moisturizer cream."

"The Skin1004 Centella Asiatica Serum is still here. $21.99, $2.71 per unit. That's a pretty good deal actually. If you like that product, Centella shows promise for wound healing. It's anti-inflammatory properties."
