What the gurus are saying

This gel feels weightless and hydrating without greasiness or stinging, even though it contains alcohol, and gurus credit the formula for genuinely strengthening barrier function. One note: it's best suited to normal or oily skin rather than very dry types, since its lightweight texture prioritizes feel over heavy moisture.

"This is a Japanese chemical sunscreen with zero white cast and amazing filters, including Tinosorb S and octinoxate. It does have alcohol in it, which terrifies some people, but it's a safe ingredient that helps maintain the formula's stability and creates a gel texture that's fast drying and allows for good evaporation of sweat, which is perfect in humidity. There's zero burning or stinging around the eyes whatsoever."

"Skin Aqua, you outdid yourself with this newest rendition, the Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel. I'm almost out of this. Highly recommend this if you like Japanese sunscreens. If you've never tried a Japanese sunscreen, this would be a great one."
The Best Skincare Of 2024
"It's a chemical sunscreen with octinoxate, Avobenzone, Avobenzone T150, and Tinosorb S. Zero white cast whatsoever. This sunscreen plays so well in humidity and in the heat. I loved it this past summer. Very lightweight, hydrating, not greasy at all. It does have alcohol in it, which scares a lot of people, but the formula is very well balanced and not the least bit drying in my experience. The alcohol probably helps with the sunscreen active ingredient stability and dissolving into the formula in a way that makes them actually functional, but it also plays a role in the overall finish. It's fast drying, non-greasy, lightweight, allows for good evaporation of sweat. If you live somewhere hot and humid, this is a sunscreen that is meant for you. It does not burn or sting around the eyes, unlike a lot of American chemical sunscreens that can give you that blurry vision, watery eye thing. No niacinamide either, which is good if you're sensitive to niacinamide since many sunscreens have it."

"This is that Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel SPF50+ PA4+. I think this is going to be a 2024 sunscreen favorite. I really like this newer formulation, super lightweight, gives the skin a fresh dewy look. It's not really shiny, no white cast, very moisturizing, great around the eyes. I mean, no complaints here. And I like fluid formulas. I feel like they spread on the skin really well and they feel really comfortable."

"I'm coming in with the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel this morning but I reviewed this for you guys a couple of weeks ago in my Japanese sunscreen video. It has a really nice finish to it. It's a little shiny for some but honestly that's sunscreen for you, it almost always has some degree of shininess. In natural lighting it's not as shiny."
Japanese Sunscreens WE NEED TO DISCUSS | 2024
"This is fragrance-free, it does have alcohol denaturant which some people do not like, but I have to tell you this is not the least bit dry whatsoever. It's a really, really lightweight, hydrating, comfortable to apply, zero white cast chemical sunscreen. The new formula has octinoxate, avobenzone, A+ avobenzone T150, and uvinul S. The older formula had parsol SLX, no avobenzone T150, so some different filters in the newer formula. Again, I can't tell the least bit of difference though, so just applying into the skin, unless you're like particularly sensitive to parsol SLX, I doubt you're going to appreciate much of a difference. It has Holly Hawk extract which could offer some anti-inflammatory compounds, antioxidants, may have some soothing, moisturizing properties. It also has hyaluronic acid which helps with water retention in skin's outermost layer. It is a pretty moisturizing formula. This is a great product to use in hair bearing areas as well. It doesn't leave any sort of residue on like your beard hair, your eyebrow hair, so if you're someone or have a loved one with a lot of facial hair and they're like 'I can't be bothered with sunscreens,' you need to have them try a Japanese sunscreen because they tend to go into the skin really nicely."
*BEST* Sunscreen Gels With NO WHITE CAST 2025
"The Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel, SPF 50, PA4 Plus has alcohol, but this is such a pleasure to use. It's even more moisturizing than the Nivea UV Super Water Gel, but not the least bit greasy. Great for addressing the needs of the skin barrier, helping with barrier function ultimately."
Sunscreens I'm Repurchasing: Empties Edition
"This is a Japanese chemical sunscreen with zero white cast and amazing filters, including Tinosorb S and octinoxate. It does have alcohol in it, which terrifies some people, but it's a safe ingredient that helps maintain the formula's stability and creates a gel texture that's fast drying and allows for good evaporation of sweat, which is perfect in humidity. There's zero burning or stinging around the eyes whatsoever."

"If you have a lot of facial hair, try the Skin Aqua UV Super Gel, I think that one would be a better choice for you. That's a chemical sunscreen, and I think it goes into facial hair much better."

"This is a great sunscreen, it's super lightweight, absorbs quickly. It's my go-to summer sunscreen because a sunscreen that is sitting on top of my skin, there is nothing worse than that, especially on my body. If I go to cross my legs and they are sticky, nah. So yeah, it's very good if that's the kind of thing that disgusts you like it does me."

"If you have very dry skin this is going to be a girl or if you're like me you have oily skin but you also live some place where it gets kind of cold and dry you know in other times of year then this might be your cold weather sunscreen. It's also very lightweight but it's a lot more hydrating than this. It's also SPF50 plus and also has a PA with four pluses also water resistant."

"Skin Aqua just recently launched their Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel with an SPF of 50 and PA of 4 plus. It is probably one of the most lightweight sunscreens I've used but it's also super resistant in all the ways that count. I would say this is better for normal to oily skin."
Yay
"The Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel SPF50 PA4+ has the same filters as my favorite one and doesn't include fragrance, but when I tried the older version on my face for a month it did not go well, my skin was drying out and just not thriving. What I ended up discovering is that this is great, this is fantastic for wearing on my body. Skin Aqua also claims they've added ingredients that help protect from pollution. Overall it's a good product, and it's also incredibly affordable, one of the more affordable per ounce options. I will absolutely keep buying this, but for me it is primarily a body sunscreen, specifically the one I choose when I'm doing outdoor activities."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
