    What the gurus are saying

This serum's fermented plant extracts and peptide blend earn praise for delivering visible hydration and bouncy skin feel that absorbs quickly despite a rich texture. Gurus note the formula supports skin renewal, collagen synthesis, and even skin tone over time, backed by Shiseido's clinical studies. The refillable packaging appeals to those looking to reduce waste, though the serum is quite concentrated, so two pumps may be all most people need to start with.

"This is a lovely, beautifully elegantly packaged line. The serum is beautiful, the moisturizer is wonderful as well. I personally really love the serum, and not only because I've used it myself, it's also really lovely to gift to a mom, a friend, a relative during holiday times or when you feel like it. This is probably Shiseido's bestselling product from all the lines that they have. This line itself really utilizes plant-derived extracts in helping to add radiance to the skin, support collagen synthesis, improve skin renewal, skin tone, evenness, and hydration. And definitely Shiseido has done clinical studies to back up these claims. I believe the numbers are crazy but this bottle serum is sold every seven seconds around the world globally, so definitely a wonderful product that is worth exploring and worth trying if you haven't. It contains fermented roselle extract that increases skin's ability to hold on to water. There's heartleaf extract, another really popular ingredient that again helps to soothe and hydrate the skin, support the skin moisture barrier. There's reishi mushroom, but we know mushroom is very beneficial."

"The Shiseido Ultimune line, they have a serum and a moisturizer I really love. The Ultimune Power Infusing Serum is made with a blend of plant-derived extracts along with a peptide complex that really helps to hydrate the skin, add radiance over time, improve skin texture and skin tone. Shiseido, even though it is a very popular and considered maybe like a luxury brand, they actually have over 150 years of research and great clinical studies backing their products. The serum and the moisturizer now both come with refills that can hopefully reduce some of that packaging waste, so not only is it beautifully packaged with wonderful ingredients but it's also more environmentally friendly at the same time."

"The Ultimune line is all about slowing down the aging process and just boosting skin immunity, making your skin barrier strong and healthy to resist any of the environmental forces that are trying to age your skin. The key ingredient here is their fermented chameleia plant. Chameleia is one of the foremost plant ingredients very widely used in Japanese beauty for anti-aging and not just in skincare. It's widely used in hair care as well. It's a luxury ingredient and in Ultimune the entire plant is utilized from the seeds to the flowers to the leaves and fermented to make everything even more potent. I find this to be quite a hard worker. If you're using this consistently every single day for a few weeks, you will already begin to see the difference in the texture of your skin and how refined it looks. Smoother, more even toned and brighter. This definitely brings out an inner skin glow. It's different from very hydrated skin glow. This is not dewiness. This is like radiance from within coming out."

"The Ultimune line is all about disrupting and slowing down the skin's aging cycle by strengthening skin immunity so that it can deal with damage, stress, aging environment. This formula is the result of 30 years of research on skin immunity and fully utilizes the whole chameleia plant from seeds to petals to leaves which goes through a proprietary biofermentation process to really harness its potency and to bring out 14 amino acids that are super beneficial for well-aging. This has other medicinal plants in it as well such as heart leaf rayi mushroom. Clinical tests have shown improvements in pretty much all the different markers of signs of aging such as fine lines, firmness, even skin tone. The texture is so comforting when you're applying. It does absorb, but the immediate results are quite surprisingly intense. And I only used two pumps of this serum, yet it feels like it's got that same potency as seven skins. This is next level hydration and bounciness."

"This antioxidant serum has been shown to boost skin's radiance in just three days as well as increase skin hydration and fortify the skin barrier. It's recently been reformulated to include fermented roselle extract and heartleaf extract which are two powerhouse ingredients that have been shown to increase skin's water retention as well as strengthen the skin and soothe it. I love the texture of this product, it feels silky as I apply it and it absorbs into the skin quickly so that you can then easily move on with the other steps in your skincare routine. I like to use this product in the morning and at night after I cleanse my skin and while my skin is still damp, I use about two pumps and smooth it over my face and neck. I always follow that with moisturizer and of course sunscreen during the daytime. I've been using this antioxidant serum now for definitely over a month and it's just something I'm excited to incorporate into my routine. It goes on lightweight, it layers well with my other products, it smells amazing."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
