  • Gentle enough for sensitive skin

What they flagged

  • Pricey for what cleansing oils do

What the gurus are saying

One expert found it removes waterproof makeup and heavy sunscreen thoroughly without stripping or leaving residue, rinsing cleanly enough to work alone or as a first cleanse. However, another took the view that cleansing oils perform similarly across the board, questioning whether the higher price and fragrance justify the choice over less expensive options.

"The fragrance isn't terribly overwhelming, just depends on how sensitive your skin is and how sensitive your nose is to the scent, but overall it's a pretty nice formula. It's got mineral oil, grape seed oil, vitamin E. It's definitely a fan favorite of a lot of people. I'd call this my Lux pick because it's definitely the most expensive out of all of them, but it does a nice job and it rinses away pretty clean as well. So you don't necessarily feel like you need a second step cleanser."

"I been loving the Shiseido Cleansing Oil. It is a beautiful, elegant oil, definitely worth the splurge, that really cleanses everything, helps to remove all the layers of sunscreen I've applied during the day, my waterproof mascara and everything without stripping the skin. It's a great first step of double cleansing. Or if you're just looking for a good cleanser or cleansing oil in particular, but worried about it either not working well or removing or leaving residue on your skin or breaking out, this one is one that you don't have to worry. Literally rinses out beautifully. It can be used as a standalone just cleanser or if you double cleanse, highly recommend it. It's just such a great product and I think it's a popular one in Japan for a reason. Contains botanical oils and green tea extract to support your skin barrier and effectively cleanse at the same time."

"I was like, cleansing oils all pretty much work the same. Like, is it really that advantageous to have a more expensive scented one? No."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
