    What the gurus are saying

This foaming cleanser earns consistent praise for being surprisingly gentle despite its rich lather, with a lower pH around 5 to 6 that supports the skin's natural barrier. The key to getting the most from it is using very little product, mixing it with water in your hands before applying to your face, which creates a full deep cleanse without leaving skin tight or dry. It contains birch sap with amino acids and minerals that help retain moisture, making it feel more hydrating than many Western cleansers.

"This is the Round Lab Moisturizing Birch Cleanser, one I've tried before. This is a great K beauty cleanser and such a good example of a cleanser that is quite different from Western cleansers. This is a true foaming cleanser, and in big contrast to Western products you need so little of it, just the tiniest amount, mixed in your hands with water before it touches your face, and then you get such rich lather, a full deep cleanse that doesn't dry your skin out. I didn't like K beauty cleansers for the longest time because I was overusing the amount of product and wasn't foaming it up off my skin, so that's a big tip."

"The Birch juice cleanser is also quite nice. It's a really nice cleanser and it does a good job."

"The second cleanser I've been using this summer is also from Round Lab, the Birch Juice Moisturizing Cleanser, and this one might actually be my favorite of the two. It has a lower pH of around 5 to 6, which is perfect for supporting the needs of the acid mantle, and lower pH cleansers tend to be a little bit gentler. It definitely does not leave your skin feeling stripped or squeaky clean. It contains birch sap with amino acids, minerals, antioxidants, vitamins, and naturally occurring sugars that help with retaining moisture, plus natural moisturizing factors and artemisia extract, which is soothing and anti-inflammatory. It feels a bit more hydrating than the other cleanser."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
