What the gurus are saying

This serum sparks debate over whether the vitamin C derivative truly works. One camp has found it a genuinely gentle, hydrating serum, some relying on it for years. Another questions the efficacy of the stable form used. It does contain fragrance, so those with sensitive skin may want to patch-test first.

"Vitamin C serum by RoC Reviving Glow, multi-correction. That one is an ethylated ascorbic acid, so a vitamin C derivative. That one's very gentle. It does have a scent that I love, but some people don't like fragrance. But I think it's a great hydrating serum that I have used a lot for the last four years and it's been great."

"Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid work really nicely together. Because vitamin C is such a labile ingredient, especially ascorbic acid, there are different forms. Some vitamin C serums have the active ascorbic acid, others have ascorbic acid derivatives. RoC Revive and Glow Vitamin C Serum will have an ethylated vitamin C, which is a derivative."

"The serum has 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, which is a stable form of vitamin C, whether or not it does anything, question mark, question mark. It also has fragrance and some botanic extracts and a peptide that may help with moisture retention."
