What they liked

  • Finely milled texture
  • Mattifies without enlarging pores
  • Keeps concealer from settling

What they flagged

Nothing. None of the experts who reviewed it raised a problem.

    What the gurus are saying

The powder's fine milling and lightweight texture let people target shine without flattening their whole face, keeping concealer in place and pores from looking enlarged even after hours of eating and drinking. The formula is economical, with a little going a long way, though most gurus who weighed in used it sparingly on shine-prone spots rather than all over.

"This is called the Hydra Setting Powder, and this is so good. I don't use a [...] lot of powder, but I prefer this just under the eyes or just around the T-zone because I can get a bit of shine. [...] It's very finely milled. I just go in to these little spots that I want to just get rid of that shine or set the concealer. [...] I still want a bit of glow, and this lets me do that."

"With the Hydra Setting Powder everything is still looking really nice, really mattified, pores aren't extra enlarged, and it seems to be keeping the concealer from settling [...] better than the tinted powder. It looks pretty dang good even after four hours with eating and drinking throughout the day."

"I really like the packaging it has a nice stopper on it. This one feels very lightweight which is nice, very smooth too. I feel like a little goes a long way. I didn't use even half of what I dumped out. It feels really nice though. I like how lightweight it is, it feels very smoothing, feels very soft. Yeah, it feels really nice."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
