What they liked

  • Removes makeup effectively
  • Lathers without stripping skin
  • Well-formulated for sensitive skin

What they flagged

  • Can leave skin feeling tight and dry
  • Pricey for a daily cleanser
  • Exfoliating claim overstated

What the gurus are saying

One expert found it removed makeup thoroughly and left skin feeling good, while another experienced significant dryness despite the formula's hydrating promises, requiring extra toning and serums afterward. That tightness means anyone with dry or sensitive skin may want to patch-test first. The cleanser lathers softly, but those prone to dehydration might find it works better as a body wash for warmer months.

"The pineapple refresh cleanser markets itself as a pineapple enzyme exfoliating formula, but the actual exfoliating ingredient is whole pineapple fruit extract, not isolated bromelain enzyme, and contact time is maybe 60 seconds, so the pineapple exfoliation story is mostly marketing. What this actually is is a gentle non-stripping cleanser, and honestly that's fine, that's what a cleanser should be, and for melanin rich skin that matters because a compromised skin barrier makes hyperpigmentation worse. It also contains poly glutamic acid which is five times more hydrating than hyaluronic acid, and the formula overall is well constructed, though seabuckthorn oil is in here which is high in oleic acid, usually fine but worth knowing if your skin is very reactive. Overall this is a good daily well formulated cleanser, but for $32 for a cleanser, spend your budget somewhere else, there are comparable options out there at a fraction of the price."

"That cleanser got everything off and it feels good. My skin feels good."

"I am convinced people are pretending they like the Rhode cleanser. I was genuinely looking forward to it because Rhode's other products are nice, but I used it solidly for a week and it was so drying that I was breaking out badly with little whiteheads and itchy skin, and that is coming from someone with a very oily T zone. It has an odd silky feel and the whole thing feels a little outdated."

Skincare So Bad, I Had To Stop Using It! Stinging, Stinky, Flakey 😭
"They call this 'A refreshing balm to lather daily cleanser, formulated with polyglutamic acid, green tea extract, and pineapple enzyme.' So it's kind of gently exfoliating, refreshing, soothing, hydrating. It sounds incredible. It says gentle enough to use morning and evening and safe for sensitive skin. However, this dried me out a lot, and I don't know how. It very much reminded me of a Clearasil kind of cleanser, the state that it left my skin in. As a product it seems nice when you use it, and the lather feels kind of soft and bouncy, but then you rinse it away, and my skin has been left tight. It's been left dry, kind of like thirsting for hydration. So whenever I use this, I had to tone a fair few times and use a really nice hydrating serum. This will go in the shower, and I'll be using it on my body absolutely fine, especially in the summer. It's just not for me, unfortunately."

"I bought one for my husband as well. He actually loves Rhode skincare, so I always buy two and we've both been really enjoying it. I specifically really like this for removing my makeup. It does a really good job at lathering up. It lathers a little more than what I was able to show in my swatch demo today because I didn't have running water. It really foams up nicely, but it doesn't strip the skin, which is great. It also removes makeup. I've really been enjoying it. I really, really like it. It's nice to have a lot of product in here too. It's travel friendly with the plastic bottle. I spend heavily on this in my routine, especially at night to help me remove my makeup."

Overcoming Your Fear of Makeup: Part 1
"I'm using this to cleanse the skin. It's actually new from Rhode. I just barely started incorporating it into my routine but so far so good. I feel like it really removes my makeup and it has a really cool texture, so I'm liking it so far. This is their Pineapple Refresh Cleanser, and I went in with that to make sure I had a nice clean canvas."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
