  • Fragrance unsuitable for sensitive skin

  • Azelaic acid ineffective for redness and acne

What the gurus are saying

This lactic acid AHA tonic wins praise from reviewers for its hydrating formula and gentler exfoliating approach compared to stronger glycolic formulas. However, the fragrance can trigger sensitivity or rosacea flare-ups, and while it includes azelaic acid, that ingredient didn't deliver on its brightening or acne-fighting claims.

"You've got the REN Ready Steady Glow Daily which is an AHA tonic, it's got AHAs and BHAs such as salicylic acid in there. You've also got lactic acid which is a great AHA to include for people with sensitive skin, and it's also got salicin in there as well which is great for acne prone skin. Unfortunately, although this toner is good, it's good for most skin types, if you've got sensitivity or if you've got problems with things like rosacea, it's got fragrance and perfume in there."

"This one is an AHA tonic as well but the AHA in here is lactic acid. Lactic acid is a step down from glycolic acid, it has bigger molecules and doesn't penetrate the skin cells as quickly as glycolic, so it's a lot milder, especially on people of color, it's a lot gentler, it's not as harsh, and I love that for us. It has 4.5% lactic acid, so not as high as the one from the ordinary, and it also has a pH between three and four. I personally found it very hydrating. I love the dropper on this one a little bit better, though I wish the dropper was a little different because it kind of squirts out everywhere when you use it, but that still doesn't deter me from picking it. It also has salicylic acid to help refine the skin as well as BHA to help unclog the pores and prevent any potential acne from forming. It's very hydrating, it just really feels amazing on the skin, while the ordinary wasn't doing anything for my skin and my skin felt sticky and dry, with this one my skin felt moisturized. Without question I picked this one because it feels so much better on the skin. This product is definitely a really really awesome product, I think Ren really did a wonderful formulation here."

"This is the Ren Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic, it is an AHA based toner. Usually when you look at an AHA based toner or normal toner, this is just better. I'm not going to be using it under my eyes but I'm just going to do a close-up and show you the sides."

How To Get Glowing Skin! 2-toned Skincare Routine I How to treat dull skin?
"With any AHA-based toner, you can basically use it twice a week to exfoliate. That's going to give your skin a chance to replenish itself. It will boost your skin cell turnover so your skin is going to look brighter. Glycolic acid, whether it's in a toner form or a cream form, is going to gently exfoliate your skin so your dead skin is going to get removed and you're going to get your fresh new baby skin, and that is going to overall brighten your skin. Key ingredients here are glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and niacinamide, which is actually the best friend and complimentary ingredient."

"I do like this as an AHA tonic, but it has azelaic acid in it as well. This is really the only liquid azelaic acid product that I could find. Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up to a lot of those claims. It smells very orange citrusy, and I tend to have more irritation to citrus, so maybe that was another reason that this didn't work for me, but this was just kind of a disappointment from the azelaic acid perspective. For the azelaic acid, I just didn't find this to have the benefits. Again, with azelaic acid we want it to help with that redness, we want it to help with acne, and we want it to help with that brightening. But I found that this not only didn't do that for me, but it really doesn't do that for others. It's more of just like an exfoliating liquid."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
