What they liked

  • Not drying for a dandruff treatment
  • Works on scalp, ears, beard and body

What they flagged

  • Applicator tip is stiff and hard to push

What the gurus are saying

The applicator tip earns mixed reactions: it delivers the treatment directly to the scalp for better effectiveness, but requires firm pressure to dispense. Gurus found it genuinely helps keep dandruff at bay and works well on related dry skin issues around ears, beard, and nose without the drying harshness typical of dandruff shampoos. Using it twice weekly alongside another shampoo, or rotating it in, appears to be how people get the most from it.

"They do an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo which is amazing. I'm not somebody that gets a lot of dandruff, but I do find I get product buildup and sometimes, particularly in winter, my scalp gets a little flaky. Nothing's ever worked. Most of the dandruff shampoos I've used before just strip and dry, kind of make the whole thing worse. This actually delivers. Doesn't strip, doesn't dry. Your hair still feels lovely after using it. It's phenomenal."

"This is their Anti-Dandruff Shampoo. I'm somebody that has used a lot of anti-dander shampoos over the years to kind of reduce flaking. I don't have a lot of flakes, but I get a couple and I can get an irritated scalp, too. I've tried a lot, and they've all either made the irritation worse, made the flaking worse, or just dried my hair out and made it feel really like straw-like. I hate that. This is the first product that has actually worked to eliminate flakes, has improved my scalp health, and doesn't dry my hair out. It's genuinely amazing. They recommend using it every other day for the first 6 weeks, then that's almost like the treatment phase and then you go into maintenance and you can use it once a week thereafter, which is what I'm now in. That salicylic acid actually works. For me, I like to use salicylic acid on scalp to prevent buildup. This will strip it all back and just give you a really fresh feeling to the scalp, which I love. It's really easy to use. If there's a teen in your life that hates the look of all those overly medical looking dandruff shampoos which are just so off-putting and want something trendy, something that looks nice and makes you want to use it, this is really inexpensive. I absolutely love it and I think props to Remedy for actually treating our scalp as well as our face. It's one of my absolute favorite products."

"This has kind of been designed to be like an all-in-one medicated treatment that targets both dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. It's kind of something that dermatologists have been recommending for years, but never existed in one bottle until now. Traditionally, if you struggle with dandruff, the advice was to rotate between two shampoos, like a salicylic acid one and ketoconazole to address the yeast. The problem is switching back and forth between two shampoos is really annoying. This formula solves that by bringing it all together in one formulation. You get 1.8% salicylic acid in here to gently exfoliate the scalp, dissolve flakes, and encourage healthy cell turnover. And then you get ketoconazole, one of the most effective ingredients for controlling dandruff at its root cause. What makes it stand out even more is the addition of these soothing botanicals. When I think of scalp treatments, I always think of those really strong minty ones that hurt your eyes. This just feels nice and almost calming."

"This does help keep my dandruff under control. I also use it as a face wash. If you ever feel like you get dry skin in your ears, behind your ears, along your nose and your beard, you also can use it as a face wash. You can use it as a body wash. Let it wash your feet. This has so many benefits beyond just the simple dandruff shampoo, and for me leaves my hair feeling extremely clean. Often times now at the end of the day I'm like extremely grungy and I just want to feel very clean and this just leaves my scalp and hair feeling like clean clean. So I love that feeling. Remedy for dandruff has ketoconazole. Extremely unique product, very often sold out. I personally don't use it every day. I use it twice a week when I'm rotating it with my Garnier shampoo. And so you can use it less often, especially if you're using it for dandruff and for hair density support like I am."

6 DERMATOLOGIST CLEANSING HACKS TO IMPROVE YOUR SKIN
"I'll just use Remedy Anti-Dandruff Shampoo in my hair. Find my ears to get this in your ears, your beard, and it really does a great job of keeping it at bay. With Remedy Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, we formulated it to be like a scalp health product. So it's not formulated like a traditional shampoo. So no fragrances, no irritating surfactants, no common preservative allergens. And so it is really kind of scalp and skin friendly in that way. So if you're looking for something that has these ingredients, but isn't going to be just made for hair, which some of those products are really not great for the skin, that is definitely a product there."

"I used this morning and I used it yesterday and I've used it three times already in the last few days. The applicator tip is the unique feature, this is both my most favorite and least favorite thing about this product. The reason I like it is because a dandruff shampoo, the main goal is to get the product to the scalp, and when you have just a traditional shampoo you're going to lose a lot of that product into and on the hair before it actually gets to where it needs to go. The tip helps it get there to be more effective. The reason I don't like the applicator tip is because it's kind of hard to push out. For someone who has short hair like me, I don't have that problem of shampoo getting lost in the weeds and not making it to where it needs to go, and it just makes it a little more difficult because of how thick the product is. But I will say you don't need nearly as much product with this than I do with other shampoos. A little bit of this comes out as a gel, a thick gel, and the lather is really nice, it's like a rich lather, it's really good experience in the shower as you're working it in. The quality of the hair is a question too. This was not nearly as drying as I thought it would be. Dandruff shampoos can be drying, but this I'd say is like kind of middle of the road, and for the strength and the efficacy I would have accepted a much more drying version of this, but it really is not."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.
