What the gurus are saying

Mandelic acid earns consistent praise as an underrated choice for acne-prone and darker skin tones, where its larger molecular size means slower, gentler exfoliation than glycolic acid, with real risk of hyperpigmentation. The 8% concentration is meaningful rather than token, and supporting ingredients like licorice root extract and centella asiatica address breakout-related discoloration and irritation alongside the exfoliation. The main split is price: some gurus find the formula thoughtful and the concentration solid, while others say $39 feels steep for what the ingredient list delivers. Start with two or three nights a week if new to acids, and pair with daily SPF since mandelic acid increases sun sensitivity.

"I actually love this product. So it's beautiful packaging, comes in a nice serum dropper. Mandelic acid, functionally a very nice balanced alpha hydroxy acid that is underutilized. A larger molecule so that it doesn't cause as much irritation, but maybe has a lower exfoliating power than its counterpart, glycolic acid. Nice gentle serum, not tacky, absorbs well into the skin, overall feels great. Mandelic acid is one of my favorites."

"It's the star of the line for dark skin, acne prone skin dealing with hyperpigmentation, texture, and uneven tone. If you've tried glycolic or lactic acid and found them too irritating, mandelic acid is your answer. [...] It's one of the most underutilized ingredients for darker skin tones in my opinion, and the eight percent formulation here is doing real work."

"I like the formulation here. It also has licorice root extract in it. It has centella that's good for soothing redness prone skin. It also has some oil reducing ingredients and antioxidants in it as well. Overall, very solid formulation, but $39 is fairly steep for a very basic serum with mandelic acid, which is a very cheap ingredient, and that's really the main ingredient in this product."

"Mandelic acid is a really smart choice for an acne-focused line, and it's not an ingredient a lot of other lines have focused on. It's an alpha hydroxy acid with a larger molecule size than something like glycolic acid, so it penetrates more slowly, which makes it significantly more gentle, especially for sensitive or darker skin tones, where other AHAs can cause irritation or even post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation."

"I think the formula is great and if you are comfortable paying that price point for a serum, go for it. But I feel like this one is just a little bit too expensive for what you're getting. Great formula, love the ingredients, but nothing on the ingredient list that would make me be like, 'Oh my gosh, this is totally worth an essentially $40 price point.' You can find a lot of great mandelic acid formulas, particularly within Korean skincare, for $30 and under."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
