What the gurus are saying

This brightener adds a subtle luminous glow that looks fresh and natural rather than cakey, and it layers beautifully over other products without creasing for most people. The serum-like texture means it works on its own if you want a barely-there brightening effect, or it can sit smoothly under concealer for those who prefer more coverage. A few have reported it creases on them, so patch-testing over your usual foundation routine first may help you know if it will play well with your setup.

"For me, typically I use a brightening concealer like the Rare Beauty one underneath my eyes."

"Look at that, do you see how much brighter that is? It's brightening because I want to have juicy bright skin, right? That's what youthful skin looks like. So I'm using makeup to help me deliver on that desire to have that nice healthy happy youthful skin. And I think that looks great. I think it's not too much, it's not cakey, it's very lightweight. I don't think it's going to settle into anything. It's just so lovely."

"I absolutely love this product. This is the Rare Beauty Under Eye Brightener. It's quite unique in that it's not really concealer. It's meant to go either just under your eyes when you're not wearing makeup to add a little bit of brightness, a little bit of light, but without having to use layers and layers of concealer that can sometimes start to look a little bit cakey and a little bit heavy. This just adds a touch of brightness, a touch of light to those areas. I find it serum-like and it really sits beautifully on top of other products. It hasn't added necessarily color. It's added a brightness to that area. Imagine this in small amounts under the eye when you're not wearing makeup and you just want to look a little bit fresher faced. It looks natural."

NEW Rare Beauty Under eye Brightener And Silky Touch Highlighter Review!
"This is a really lightweight texture and it's a very lightweight but at the same time I feel like if I added a bit more it would give me a little bit more coverage. It looks like skin, it looks like healthy skin. I really really like that. It's not as liquidy as concealer, it's not creamy like concealer, it just has a nicer shine to it, it just has a really really beautiful glow. It's a strange texture in a good way. I don't think I've really experienced this kind of formula before. I really love a concealer under the eye that doesn't necessarily have to be full full coverage, it's almost like using a beauty balm or tint but in concealer form. This would be great on an everyday kind of situation. If you want your skin to look like skin beautiful, I think this would be perfect. After wearing it for a while under my eyes they still look nice and glowy, like it has a natural like skin feel. I'm just really healthy today, my skin looks great. I love the glow I'm getting, I love the subtlety of the coverage."

"I'm going to take the under eye brightener, mine is in the shade light. I'm just gonna do a teensy bit under the eyes before going in with concealer. I blend that in with a concealer brush. I love this product, it looks so nice underneath the eyes specifically."

The BEST Makeup TODAY.. According to YOU!
"I really do love the formula. It's just such a nice lightweight brightening glowy type of a product, and you'll see how pretty it looks under the eyes. It doesn't look makeupy at all. You could honestly just stop here and not even go into concealer if this offers the coverage that you're looking for. By itself, it's gorgeous."

"It's a little bit like a very light concealer, it's not a full-blown concealer. It gives you just enough coverage that it can hide some dark circles. If you have just some very light dark circles, it brightens your under eye area. It just makes your skin look really nice and flawless looking in the areas that you use it. I personally like to use it on days where I'm going for a no makeup makeup look because I don't even have to set it. It's so light on my skin, it just barely gives any coverage and it doesn't sink into my fine lines or anything. It just looks like I'm glowing."

"This is really pretty, it's a nice looking concealer, very smooth. I think it's really pretty, really smooth, I hope it lasts a day. The concealer looks okay but it's also looking more luminous and getting into wrinkles a little bit. The concealer is all settled in all my wrinkles including my crow's feet, I never really get settling in my crow's feet and this is a big settler."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
