"There's also topical calcineurin inhibitors. So these are the medications called Protopic or Elidel by brand name and they work like corticosteroids but don't have the side effects with long-term use, so that could be skin thinning or causing acne. And those are great medications to use kind of as maintenance or even alternating with your corticosteroids. I often will have my patients use corticosteroids like Monday through Friday and then the topical calcineurin inhibitors on the weekends, or say really hitting hard with the topical steroids and then using the calcineurin inhibitors as maintenance."
