What the gurus are saying

This hypochlorous acid spray calms redness and surface irritation across reactive skin, rosacea, breakouts, and even perioral dermatitis, with reviewers praising its fine mist application and reasonable price. The key thing to know: it can deactivate antioxidants like vitamin C and retinoids, so let it dry completely before layering other actives, or use it in the evening away from those products. It works best as a soothing daily support rather than a cure for acne or rosacea.

"I currently am using the Prequel hypochlorous acid spray. [...] One of the reasons I like this one is that it comes in a nice mini size that I can use when I'm flying, on the go, and [...] it has a really nice mister as well. I swear once I started using hypochlorous acid, I never looked back. I use it every single morning and night."

Every Product I’ve Emptied in 2026 (and What I’d Rebuy 👀)
"By this point I've already gone through three of these Prequel sprays as well as three or four of the Tower 28 sprays, so I have a lot of mileage on hypochlorous acid sprays, and honestly, comparing these two, I kind of like them equally. I feel like the formulas are very comparable to each other. However, I kind of hate the Tower 28 packaging and I really like the Prequel packaging instead, so I've literally dumped my Tower 28 formula into the Prequel spray because this one has such a finer mist compared to the Tower 28 one, which is a little bit more of a harsher, more direct, intense spray. This one is a very fine mist. Now the downside of a fine mist is that you end up going through it a lot quicker because more of the mist is kind of lost in the air. So even though this one is more affordable than the Tower 28 spray, I do think they last about the same amount of time, because with the Tower 28 spray it's a little bit harsher, which means you're getting all the formula delivered to your skin, as opposed to the Prequel spray, where half of it is kind of floating through the air. So it really depends on your personal preference. I personally still really enjoy the Prequel packaging, because the Tower 28 one is just a little bit too intense and jarring, especially when I spray it on my face in the morning. But [...] when comparing these two, I really enjoyed both of them, and as far as price point goes, when it comes to how long the product lasts, they're about the same and you'll be spending about the same amount."

"I've been using it every single day for the past 2 weeks, and I've really been liking it so far. One of the main things I love about it is the type of spray packaging nozzle it has. I've tried many facial sprays in my lifetime, and a lot of them have you bracing for impact, spraying so intensely. But this one is so fine. And honestly, the quality feels similar to what I would expect from a $30, $40, or even $50 facial spray to be, but it's only $17. I incorporate hypochlorous acid into my routine as a preventative measure against redness and irritation. For the price point, the ingredients, and the quality of the sprayer, there's no denying it's a really good product. I definitely recommend it."

"The first recommendation is a hypochlorous acid spray, and the one I like a lot is the Prequel Universal Skin Solution. It comes in a 4 oz bottle for around 17 bucks, which is a reasonable price for how long it lasts. It's formulated with a stabilized hypochlorous acid plus electrolyzed water and mineral concentrate, so it's doing a little more than just pure hypochlorous acid. It's also fragrance free and alcohol free, which matters if your skin is already reactive. The texture is basically like water and feels like nothing on the skin, making it accessible even for people with reactive skin or skin types that can't handle most active ingredients. I'd use it post-workout as a quick spray before you can get to the shower, especially if you're prone to body acne, folliculitis, or breakouts on the back, jawline, chest, or shoulders, or a few spritzes in summer when skin is hot and sweaty and inflamed. [...] It's also useful for breakouts along the hairline from hats, helmets, or headbands, [...] irritation around piercings, [...] eczema-prone patches, and razor burn or ingrown hairs after shaving. I don't think it cures acne and it won't replace your actual acne treatment, but as a supportive daily-use product to calm surface irritation and reduce bacteria, I think it's important to keep on your shelf."

"I haven't felt like there's a lot of difference in the hypochlorous acid mists I've tried personally, it's not a complicated product and not one that maybe everyone needs, it's more of a quick spray cleanser. The nozzle and sprayer are great and it's not too expensive, but it is one that I wouldn't go out of my way to buy. It's a great hypochlorous acid mist option, but my favorite is still the one from Pacifica because it's accessible and it's $12."

Prequel & Experiment Skincare: HYPED Brands, Are They Worth It??
"This is a hypochlorous acid spray for face and body, and as someone with acne prone skin I do like it, I like it. I love that a well respected dermatologist came out with a more affordable option compared to Tower 28, same size at four fluid ounces, and I think it's a great option for those of us with acne. All that said, I'm not committing to my own personal view on this just yet, I'm going to do a full trial next month against a tea tree oil product and I think I'm going to prefer that, so I'll decide at the end of February whether this is a product I'm going to stick with or whether I'm going to go for another antibacterial option."

"This one by Prequel, the hypochlorous acid spray, is such a holy grail of mine. [...] I love this one because it's packaged really well. It has a great pH, very simple ingredients, and it's not overpriced. [...] We don't need to be spending like $30 or more on hypochlorous acid, that's insane. [...] It's like a one fix all type of product. It can help acne, rosacea, eczema, sensitive skin, can help fix or repair your skin barrier. It's great to use after the gym to cut down on bacteria on the skin. It's a really, really great addition to any skincare routine."

"I use the one by Prequel. This is called the Universal Skin Solution Dermal Spray. This is a really great formulation at a great pH and a super affordable price, even better than many of the other popular ones out there. I just do a quick spritz over the surface of the skin. Hypochlorous acid is not just a great treatment for acne because it's antimicrobial and can kill that acne-causing bacteria, but it also reduces inflammation on your skin and can help rebuild the microbiome of your skin and strengthen your skin barrier, which are all very important things when you are putting a retinoid, which is irritating, on the skin."

"I'm going to go in with the Prequel Universal Skin Solution Dermal Spray. This is hypochlorous acid. This is, I guess, kind of to rewet it. This isn't really a toner but you guys have heard me talk about how much I love this stuff. It's great for any redness. For me, I was dealing with my perioral dermatitis under here, which you can see is getting better. [...] I like to let that dry down just because it can deactivate some of your other skincare products."

My Updated Skincare Routine for Melasma & Dark Spots
"This is from Prequel, this is the Universal Skin Solution Dermal Spray. This is just a hypochlorous acid spray, and there's a reason for it, it is great for anybody who has skin irritation. For me with peroral dermatitis, and because of my melasma, I have noticed that anytime I get really red, like if I'm irritated, I have redness, or if I spent too much time at the gym, or if I was out in the sun, if I got really hot, I will keep a bottle of this. I also like spraying it on my back so I don't get breakouts. If you're going to use any antioxidants like retinoids or AHA, then you want to let it dry down before you go in with some of your other products. It's essentially like spraying bleach on your skin, so just keep that in mind. But I think this is just such a great type of product to have in your routine and in your bag, and it's like a catchall for so many different skin issues. If you're dealing with any redness like I do, that redness can lead to more melasma."
Pre & Post-Gym Skincare Routine for Clear, Glowing Skin
"This is the hypochlorous acid, they call it Universal Skin Solution Dermal Spray for Face and Body, it's 0.2% hypochlorous acid. I'm obsessed. Every time I'm at Target looking at my own brand and I see Prequel I'm so proud of Dr. Sam Ellis and I have to pick up another bottle because I go through so much of this. I'm putting this on partially for the perioral dermatitis I still have, I'm so red in that area, partially because I get red on my cheeks lately so much more too. There are days where I go to the gym and then I have to run some errands, like maybe I need to go grocery shopping, I need to go pick some stuff up, I have to go to my mailbox to pick up PR packages. I will take my hypochlorous acid spray and I will spray it on my skin just to make sure I don't get breakouts. It is such a lifesaver, I'm obsessed, so obsessed. The only thing to keep in mind is that this is basically like kind of like bleach, so if you don't let it dry down for a second and then you go in with something like your peptide serum or your antioxidant serums, then it might actually make those inactive. So you just want to let it dry down for a second."

"This one's from Prequel, it's my favorite one out there. It's really affordable, I really just love the way it sprays, it's nice and soothing. I love using hypochlorous acid especially after I work out, like right after the gym when I'm not going directly into the shower. I spray this on, it helps you to just not break out. [...] I especially think it's great for post shave and when you cut yourself."

Are Dermatologist Skincare Brands Actually Any Good? 🤔 Remedy, Dr Idriss, Prequel
"Hypochlorous acid is something that Dr Sam Ellis says that she uses on her clients before services like Botox, filler, micro needling. There's also soothing mineral concentrate in here which they say is an optimal magnesium content to help soothe and strengthen the barrier function of the skin. I use this every single day without fail because I've always got rosacea, I'm kind of always breaking out, and it does just calm everything down. [...] It's great for cuts and scrapes, you could use it on your pets if they've got a little cut. [...] There is a little bit of talk how hypochlorous acid can basically render your antioxidants useless, so I personally use this in the evening. I have started using a vitamin C more in the mornings just for its antioxidant benefits, so I would use hypochlorous acid in the evening when I'm not using vitamin C and let that dry down completely before I go into my next steps."

My rosacea has been silent since I've been using it. [...] This is an amazing one from Prequel. It's really affordable compared to other ones on the market. I usually do this before any other skincare and just kind of let it dry down, after cleanse, and go into it. [...] If you're struggling with redness, skin irritation, breakouts, rosacea, give Hypochlorous Acid a try. [...] We're seeing brands like Prequel doing these amazing face and body products that actually work for face and body."
This Is My Best Skincare Routine So Far - Top 10 Favourite Skincare Products
"My new favorite is Prequel's Universal Skin Solution Dermal Spray. Hypochlorous acid, I always say it's like an anti-bacterial for your face. It helps with skin irritation, redness, breakouts, cuts, grazes. If you picked a spot, it's going to help soothe it. This has been my everything for everything. When my rosacea is flaring up, spray on, soothes it. Breakouts, irritated skin, I get really irritated like on my sideburns for some reason. Knowing I have sprays like this, soothing serums, skin barrier repairing moisturizers that are going to help soothe it quicker, I worry about it a lot less. This has hypochlorous acid, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate, disodium phosphate, and electrolyte water. I found this while I was doing my doggy first aid course and they're selling this as antiseptic skincare. It's hypochlorous acid. What I will say though is this isn't available in the UK, it's not available in Europe."

"This is the Prequel Universal Skin Solution, it is hypochlorous acid. [...] It's a very gentle refresher for the skin, it's antimicrobial, it's anti-inflammatory, and it's what I use every day in my own clinic to prepare my patient skin for procedures. It helps cleanse the skin. I found that sometimes people who have very sensitive skin have low-grade irritation going on from their environment or they have an unusual microbiome, so the bacteria and fungi and viruses that sit on their skin sensitize it, and using something like hypochlorous acid in your routine can be so helpful. I love this one in particular because the mist is just so beautifully fine. I often will use this after I work out, but it's also so gorgeous in a nighttime skincare routine and it's so refreshing. We launched this product over a year ago now, and since then so many of my patients have come in and said that this truly saved their skin, whether they were dealing with perioral dermatitis or a little eczema patch. People put this on bug bites and just random rashes."

Dermatologist Explains Hypochlorous Acid: How to Use it in Your Skincare Routine | Dr. Sam Ellis
"I'm such a fan of hypochlorous acid and I've seen so many of my own patients benefit from it over the years, so it was really important to me that when I created my own skincare brand Prequel, we had a hypochlorous acid product as well. The Prequel version [...] is called Universal Skin Solution to denote how universal it can really be. I really love the spray mechanism on this because one issue I found with hypochlorous acid sprays in the past is you don't get a nice fine mist when you spray, it's more of a squirt, and so I really find that this has a beautiful application on the skin. I do want to make it very clear that this is not considered a drug; it is a cosmetic, so we really think of it as calming, soothing, and purifying the skin, but it is not a treatment or cure for things like acne or rosacea."

"Hypochlorous acid is a really gentle topical, but it also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, so if someone has chronic low-grade inflammation of their skin, incorporating a hypochlorous acid spray one to two times a day may help calm some of that inflammation and in turn reduce visible signs of redness. When I was creating Prequel, my skincare brand, I wanted to have a hypochlorous acid spray in there because I recommend it so much and it's something that has done wonders in my own skincare routine."
Introducing Prequel's NEW Hypochlorous Acid Spray, Universal Skin Solution | Dr. Sam Ellis
"You can use it on your face and your body and really get all of the value that you need from it. [...] Dermatologists have understood that hypochlorous acid is incredible, [...] and I want [...] to help you understand how to use hypochlorous acid to be the most beneficial for you. This mist when I tell you it is so fine, you put it on your skin it sits there for a second and then it flashes off so that you're not really sitting there wet or sticky from its application. It just makes it so easy to use on the go. We formulated the skin solution spray to be incredibly stable because hypochlorous acid can be a little bit finicky and it is so important that the processing is correct so that that hypochlorous acid remains effective in solution and can continue to work its magic in the packaging and then when it's on the skin. [...] I like to put it on after the shower, I towel dry after the shower I spritz it on especially in my armpits because I don't love wearing antiperspirant all the time and this is a really nice way for me to control body odor. [...] I spray it on my face, usually one two one two like three spritzes on my face, it dries down in like two seconds and then I go in with my antioxidant usually my vitamin C. A lot of people wonder can you use something like hypochlorous acid and then follow it up with an antioxidant like vitamin C and yes you can, you just have to let this one dry which happens pretty much instantaneously and then you can proceed with the rest of your routine. I also like to have one of these in my to-go bag because it is really nice to refresh the skin midday."
