What the gurus are saying

This gel's standout strength is its ability to plump and brighten the under-eye area through light scattering, making dark circles and fine lines less visible, while also shielding delicate eyelid skin from irritants that can worsen with blinking. Dermatologists praise its lightweight texture, which makes it ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin who want a skin protectant without the heaviness of traditional occlusive balms. One note: some experts found it delivers slightly less under-eye brightening than competing formulas with hyaluronic acid, though it excels at soothing irritation and maintaining moisture in compromised skin, making it excellent for post-procedure recovery or travel.

"I put a little drop like under each eye and then rub it around to my upper eyelids. Amazing for especially the under eye area. The glycerin is very hydrating. So it plumps the surface of the skin through light scattering, dark under eye hollows and dark circles are less obvious. Just kind of brightens up the under eye area, smooths out wrinkles, but importantly it protects the eyelid from irritants which can get there, settle and then get sucked up close to the skin as the muscles contract. The skin protectant to the eyelids helps protect them. I've managed to be able to put a tiny drop of that on my eyelids in the morning and work it in and let it dry down and then put sunscreen on over and not get any peeling around the eyes. And that pairing has worked out really well for my eyelid skin needs. I am kind of intrigued to try that with this 40% much higher than the other one."

"I put up a video comparing Prequel Skin Utility Gel to CeraVe gel which you guys know I really like. This is a great product, it's another glycerin skin protectant gel, great for protecting the skin around your eyes, but I don't get as much of a bang for my buck with this in terms of under eye brightening effect that I do with a La Roche-Posay one. And the only thing that I can think that explains that is the La Roche-Posay one also has hyaluronic acid whereas this one does not. This one's just a touch thinner too in terms of texture, and the Prequel one has a little bit of a fruity aroma to it whereas CeraVe does not."

"It's a skin protectant. It's meant to help heal damaged skin. For example, if you just had a procedure or you have overdone it with your skincare and you're getting a lot of dryness, peeling, god forbid, maybe you had a sunburn and you're in the peeling stages. I'm currently using and almost finished, and when I do finish, I will repurchase this, the Prequel Skin Utility Gel."

Skincare That Got Me To New York | Travel Vlog
"I finished up the La Roche-Posay recently so I'm making my way through this. This one works pretty well, really great for travel purposes. When I get off a plane my skin is a lot more sensitive, probably because of the dry air, and this works well for that."

"This was excellent. One of the main differences is this one, the Prequel Skin Utility Gel, has niacinamide, which is great. I like that. It's a skin protectant, so it protects eyelid skin from irritants. Eyelid skin is really vulnerable to irritants and allergens because of how delicate it is, and when you blink your eye, the muscles contract and kind of suck those irritants and allergens up closer. So having a skin protectant on board really does a lot."
*BEST* Glycerin Gel? | La Roche Posay Vs Prequel Review
"I found the Prequel Skin Utility Gel to be a touch bit more lightweight, I mean barely perceptible. I honestly didn't find it to be as wow in terms of the under eye brightening effect, but in using it around my eyes I did find it to be very effective for reducing eyelid irritation, keep the eyelids skin moisturized, smooth, supple. I just didn't quite get as much bang for my buck in terms of the under eye brightening effect. The ultimate outcome of improving moisture retention, smoothing the skin surface, protecting the skin from irritant is the same. I noticed that the Skin Utility Gel kind of has a bit of a fruity aroma to it."

"I just am putting on some glycerin skin protectant and look, there already, bright eyes. I'm telling you, glycerin under the eyes, it's a game changer. This is the Prequel Skin Utility Gel. It has niacinamide, and it has a fruity aroma. Very similar in terms of ingredient focus, performance, function to another gel I use, but those little details aside, they are adjacent."

"I'm also going to put a layer of the skin utility gel from Prequel. This is kind of like the La Roche-Posay splash gel that I love around my eyes. This also performs well. This in contrast to that has niacinamide. Those of you who are sensitive get the La Roche-Posay one but this one's pretty good. I love niacinamide, it's good for the moisture barrier, dark spots, redness, anti-aging, but some people it bothers and stinks. This one in contrast to the La Roche-Posay one has a grapy sort of fruity ketotic aroma to it but it's really good. It doesn't have like added fragrance or anything. This works pretty well on the lips too. The glycerin and skin protectants help plump and protect the lips and in doing so diminishes little lip lines, the little fine ones."

"I really enjoy this product because I don't want to be going to bed with those heavy slugging petrolatum kind of products, especially with warmer weather coming up. I want to wake up not so greasy and oily because it's going to be hot. I kind of also want those extra added benefits that you get from this product, so not just an emollient kind of layer but skin loving ingredients too. I've only been using this for about two weeks but so far I've used it pretty much every night."

Are Dermatologist Skincare Brands Actually Any Good? 🤔 Remedy, Dr Idriss, Prequel
"I'm obsessed, obsessed with this, the Prequel Skin Utility Gel Multi-Purpose Skin Protectant. This has 60% glycerin, 5% vitamin B complex, and a bioactive soothing complex. I've been using their skin utility ointment religiously as my slugging product, and this is a little bit more elegant than Vaseline with a few more skincare benefits. It's like slugging with benefits, you know, because usually slugging is just that petrolatum layer. This is genius, so this is like a skin slugging gel. It's lightweight, it's moisturizing, hydrating, soothing without being Vaseline, without being suffocating and heavy. This is definitely a summer slugging product versus the ointment which I'll be using in the winter when my skin is a lot drier. I have air on, I use fans in summer as well, so my skin can still get pretty dry during the night, so I will be using this lighter weight slugging kind of product for those times just to keep my skin in check. I've only been using this for like a week so we'll come back to this in a future video."

"I think a gel is really valuable here especially for people who want something lighter on their skin or maybe suffer from oily skin and want something that's not going to weigh them down. This isn't your typical gel cream or watery gel. It starts as a gel but as you work it into the skin it forms this very light veil on the skin that is just special. I have not touched something like this before in the best way. As a skin protectant, the thing that I think is so cool is that this could layer in multiple different places in your routine. You could do it as the first thing on your skin or over your moisturizers. Because of this lightweight texture, this product is so ideal for people who like the idea of slugging or skin protectants in concept but maybe have acne prone skin or oily skin and they've never really been able to get on board with that. This will allow you to still help your skin and heal your skin in that way but with something that feels more comfortable to you. Even though this is a skin protectant and it has some occlusive properties, it's still very breathable and so it's very comfortable on the skin. If you're in the category where you want your skin barrier to be restored but you don't necessarily want to feel the product on your skin, this gel is fantastic."

Introducing Prequel's NEW Skin Utility Balm Multi-Purpose Skin Protectant | Dr. Sam Ellis
"There are people who are going to love that gel because maybe they have more oily skin or they're looking for a really lightweight skin protectant and there are going to be certain times that I reach for that more than I reach for the balm for example in the summer or when I'm traveling to more humid climates"

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
