What the gurus are saying

The 50% glycerin concentration earns consistent praise for leaving skin soft and hydrated rather than tight or stripped, making it a standout choice for dry, mature, or barrier-compromised skin and those using active ingredients like retinoids. The gentle formula also suits sensitive and eczema-prone skin. One caveat: a few gurus with very dry skin found it surprisingly stripping, and those who dislike foaming cleansers may want to try it as a body wash instead, where it performs beautifully.

"The prequel cleanser is a really gentle glycerin-based cleanser with very low foaming action that actually hydrates your skin. It's a really good gentle alternative to a milk or cream cleanser for hot summer months."

"I'm starting off this morning using the Prequel Non-Drying Glycerin Cleanser to wash my face. I do have some oil buildup and skin care from the night before, so I definitely want to gently cleanse that off. And this one's been really nice. It has this jelly-like texture and it's very gentle."
Break The Dehydration Cycle in 3 Steps! | Skincare Routine for Dehydrated Skin
"This is the Prequel cleanser. This is a very gentle cleanser. And since this is an evening routine, I do suggest using a cleanser that is very gentle like this one. Something that doesn't make your skin feel squeaky clean or really tight right after washing it. That's actually going to make your dehydration worse. Cleansing is definitely something you want to keep your eye on with dehydrated skin because it can actually strip a lot of the essential moisture from your skin. That actually makes the dehydrated feeling a lot worse. So what I would actually suggest is in the evening, use the gentlest cleanser that you can stand."

"This one is from Prequil. This is their cleanser. This is made with mainly glycerin which is a humectant and so it's very hydrating. So in the evening when I have on makeup or tinted sunscreen and I want to get my makeup off, I do a double cleanse."

Best Skincare of 2025 for Mature Skin!
"For my gentle cleanser for my second cleansing step, I've switched over to the Prequel cleanser this year. I love this as a second cleanse. It's so hydrating and so soothing. It doesn't have any hidden irritants in it like fragrance or acids."

Faves + Fails March 2025
"I really really love this as a first step cleanser. It's really mild, it's really soothing. There are some surfactants in here which normally I like a face wash with no surfactants, I don't like anything that foams or strips my skin, but the idea behind this one is that they put in 50% glycerin and glycerin is one of the workhorses of our skincare routine. It's in everything, it's humectant, it keeps the surfactants that are in here from stripping your skin so it keeps your skin more hydrated while it does its work of cleaning your skin. My only complaint about this is that it takes a little bit longer to rinse this away than some of the other cleansers that I'm used to for my second cleanse. I just wish that it rinsed a little bit quicker from the skin, but other than that no complaints about it."

"This is a very affordable gigantic cleanser you can use on your face and your body, and I deeply respect it because cleanser doesn't have to be an expensive step. If I pump it into my hands, add water, foam it up, and then wash my face, there are no issues, it leaves my skin feeling thoroughly cleansed without a film. But if I pump it directly into my hand and put it on wet skin, it leaves a film behind, and because the cleanser I actually need as someone with acne has to be applied on dry skin, I struggle to remember to use it the right way. Otherwise it's a fantastic cleanser, but that's why I'm keeping it in my just okay category."

"One of my favorite cleansers for mature skin is the Prequel cleanser. It's built with 50% glycerin, which is one of the most effective humectants in skincare, meaning it's going to draw water into the skin and keep it there. It also contains inulin, which is a prebiotic that helps support a healthy skin microbiome, and arginine, which is an amino acid that helps protect and repair the skin barrier while also cleansing. The result is a formula that removes makeup, excess oil, and impurities while also leaving your skin actively soft, comfortable, and balanced. Never tight, not stripped, not dry. For mature, dry or sensitive skin, that distinction matters more than most people realize."

Say Goodbye to Dry Winter Skin: Dermatologist-Approved Bodycare Tips
"My next cleanser in this category is the Prequel Non-Drying Glycerin Cleanser. This one's kind of similar to the La Roche-Posay in the sense that it's really foamy, it comes out creamy but it turns into foam really quick. It's suitable for face and body, so if you're one of those people who just wants an all-in-one, this is another great one. It's a non-stripping glycerin cleanser for the face and body. It has 50% glycerin in it and a unique [Aquaphor] stimulating active to boost skin suppleness, soften and humidify. This rich glycerin cleanser effectively removes makeup, excess oil and impurities while maintaining skin's natural moisture barrier and its pH. It's really good for dry, sensitive skin. It's perfect for those looking for minimal yet effective body and face skincare routine. Key ingredients here are 50% glycerin, which is a powerhouse humectant that draws water into the skin, improves hydration and enhances elasticity, as well as supports the skin's barrier. It also contains a little bit of arginine, which is a naturally occurring amino acid in the skin's natural moisturizing factor, and it provides long-lasting hydration and reduces dryness by adhering to the skin with its cationic charge. Another ingredient is oat extract, which is a calming and soothing ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It helps reduce irritation and supports a balanced, healthy skin barrier. It also contains aloe, which is a natural humectant."

"This is a really nice hydrating formula. It leaves your skin really nice and soft. It doesn't foam up. You can use it face and body. The key ingredients here are ceramides, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid. The Prequel cleanser is non-drying. It has tons of glycerin in it. It doesn't strip anything. It's going to leave you really nice and hydrated. It has 50% glycerin and inulin to support that healthy moisture barrier. It's really gentle, humectant-rich formula. It does a really good job removing makeup, excess oil, impurities while leaving your skin really soft, supple, balanced, hydrated. It's really good for dry and very dry skin types or those who are using barrier-compromising actives. If you're somebody using retinoids or AHAs and BHs and your skin is irritated, this is a really good cleanser. It's also suitable for eczema-prone or really reactive skin. The key ingredients here are the 50% glycerin and the inulin. Inulin is a prebiotic that supports that healthy skin microbiome balance. Also contains arginine, which is an amino acid that helps protect and repair the skin barrier, aloe vera, and oat extracts."

"The cleanser from Prequel, 50% glycerin, this stuff is really unique. It comes out almost jelly stringy like, which I know sounds like it doesn't sound very appealing, but it is foaming. It does a fantastic job at clearing out any makeup. It's great for eye makeup removal, good for any body part, again from babies to adults, anyone anywhere on the body. Doesn't have much scent to it. Super hydrating, the glycerin is a hecton. It will help hydrate even if you take hot showers like some of us do."

"My first favorite from them is their cleanser, which is their non-drying glycerin face cleanser for face and body. It's 18 bucks. It comes in a giant bottle and it's fragrance-free. It works as a great morning cleanser to just kind of rinse off all its stuff but not leave your skin feeling dry or tight or anything like that. It really leaves skin feeling supple and soft. I use this on my face and body a little bit during the winter. Typically I've been just using it more on my face, but over the last few weeks my body started a little bit on the drier side and changing this into my body cleanser really helped. This stuff's wonderful."

"I really enjoy it. [...] This one's really nice. The bottle's huge, [...] it's like 13.5 ounces, so this is a face or body or both cleanser and I've been using it kind of on both. There's not much of a lather but a very light lather I would say."

"It's founded by Dr. Samantha Ellis, a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist based in the San Francisco area. The product standout in my opinion for this brand is the facial cleanser which is about 17 bucks. It's a nice gentle fragrance-free glycerin based face and body cleanser. Great for morning cleansing, great for your body, great for dry, sensitive skin, all of that. I keep this in the shower with me because I use this a lot on my body because it's just so gentle. Not super lathery or foamy or anything like that. And it just leaves my skin, in the winter my skin gets very dry, so this one's pretty good at keeping it from getting too too dry. Some super lathery soapy cleansers can just do too much for me."

5 Affordable Skincare Brands Better Than CeraVe & Cetaphil
"Another brand I'm really liking is Prequel, and they've got some really nice, affordable cleansers. This one's 13 ounces and it's really affordable. They tend to be sold at Target, so you can pick it up at the same stores you'd pick up Cetaphil and Cave. They tend to avoid fragrances, which is nice, and they have a nice range of gentle cleansers and moisturizers. This is their cleanser, which is a great morning cleanser. Some people prefer to rinse their skin off in the morning, I'm typically one of those, but some nights if you use a thick sleeping mask or something like that, a nice gentle wash is nice, and this is great for that."

"This is a Non-Drying Glycerin Cleanser. This contains 50% glycerin which I feel like is really underrated. A lot of people, the first thing we think of is hyaluronic acid, but glycerin actually does a great job at hydrating the skin as well. [...] It does a pretty decent job again with removing most basic stuff without overdrying your skin. So really ideal for those that struggle with dry skin too. Aside from the glycerin, it also contains inulin, which is a probiotic that supports our skin barrier along with arginine amino acid that again is also supportive for skin barrier and then aloe and oat extract."

"I really like this cleanser. I finished it up fairly recently, and it's really good and it works well as a body wash too, which is what it's marketed as."
Is Prequel Skincare Worth It?
"This has oat flour which is packed with wonderful hydrating ingredients and helps with cleansing. It also has Arginine, a natural moisturizing factor naturally present in your skin that, like glycerin, can help overall with moisture retention. It's gentle enough to use around my eyes to wash off eye makeup. I do a [...] mascara test where I wash my face with a cleanser in the shower without using any makeup removing balm, oil, or wipe, [...] just the cleanser. If I step out and have raccoon eyes, it fails. This passed the mascara test. They advertise it as having a pH of 4.5, which is great, it's more on the acidic side, which is beneficial for people who have eczema-prone skin or atopic dermatitis. Harsher cleansers with a higher pH can be disruptive to an already impaired skin barrier. The texture is a little bit thick as you spread it over the skin, which I've experienced with other glycerin-based gel cleansers before, but as you spread it over the skin surface it starts to work up into a mild silky lather with a little bit of creamy foam to it. Importantly, it rinses off the skin easily, doesn't leave behind a residue."

"The best thing from that line that I've tried so far has to be the Prequel Non-Drying Glycerin Cleanser. I was using it as both a face wash and a body wash, and then I just used it as a face wash, and I'm using it now as a hand wash. I find that really helps me out a lot because I am prone to eczema on my hands, especially where you get those little itchy blisters, so I avoid any kind of harsh hand washes. It doesn't aggravate my hand eczema."

"One product from the line in particular that I continue to use a lot, I mean on a daily basis and rather enjoy, is the Cleanser. This is their Gel Cleanser. Now I have a tendency to really prefer gel cleansers, just I find the sensory experience of them to be rather enjoyable, so I like the texture of this. I like the ingredients it has glycerin which is hydrating, it has oat which also is hydrating and has a mild cleansing ability to it, and it has this oligosaccharide inulin which is delivered to the skin via liposomes and this can help after you rinse the cleanser off, it can help with sustain hydration of skin's outermost layer. So I've used this as a face wash and I like that I can use it by itself without necessarily needing to use an oil cleanser first to remove water resistant sunscreen or makeup like it passes the mascara test."

"I knew I was going to love this product so much so that I bought two, this is the Cleanser by Prequel, it's a non-drying cleanser that contains 50% glycerin. So this just has my name all over it but as it turns out it's actually not for me. So for some reason, I just assumed a glycerin cleanser was going to feel like a gel cleanser, just the way that it performed on my skin, but as it turns out this is actually a foaming cleanser. I don't like foaming cleansers and I'm sure it's all in my head but I just can't shake the feeling that foam cleansers are stripping my skin. The thing about this product, this is like foam on steroids. I mean it's super fine but super thick and I found it really hard to remove even with the cloth. My skin feels great but it's just not the experience I want and as you all know I choose products partly for the experience because I enjoy the ritual."

I Didn’t Repurchase Most of These
"On paper, this should have been perfect for me. It's packed with glycerin, super nourishing, all the things I would normally love. I was so sure I was going to love it I bought two. [...] I didn't really enjoy this on my face. I just don't love foaming cleansers. I didn't know that this was a foaming cleanser. But as a body cleanser, oh my gosh, fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And it lasted forever and it's a great price. So this became one of those products that shifted categories entirely. Face, no. Body, yes. I can honestly tell you if they sold this here in Ireland, I would repurchase it in an instant to use as a body wash."

"Despite the fact that it contains 50% glycerin, which is why I knew I was going to love it, it was far too foamy for my face. I don't like a foaming face wash. It's just not my jam. And if you do like a foaming face wash, you need to buy this immediately. I mean, it is a huge bottle and it's only $18. I decided to not waste it, to move it into the shower, and I am so glad that I did. It is the perfect body wash. It is super gentle. It is super hydrating. I absolutely love it."

"This cleanser kind of turns into a really lightweight foam that feels like you're moisturizing your face with that foam. It doesn't feel like it's stripping anything. It rinses away with a really really good deep cleanse without the stripping of a deep cleanse. We have oat in here as well, I believe it's oat kernel extract which is lovely and soothing, so you can really take your time with this, and aloe as well, soothing and hydrating. It's just such a nice cleanser. It's quite a unique cleanser in the sense that the texture is a little bit different. There are a few other similar cleansers, but as far as how it then interacts on the skin, how it then foams up, how it then leaves your skin, is fairly unique. The thing about this that just feels a lot more nourishing and moisturizing than any other cleanser I've used."

"This is Prequel's Non-Drying Glycerin Cleanser for face and body with 50% Glycerin. This is huge. This is really, really huge. So Prequel say that this is a non-stripping Glycerin cleanser for the face and body, formulated with 50% Glycerin, inulin, and a unique aquaporin-stimulating active to boost skin suppleness. Along with Arginine, Oat Extract and Aloe to soothe and comfort the skin. Obviously, we know that Glycerin is nice and hydrating, and they say as well as to help repair the epidermal barrier. Arginine is part of the natural moisturizing factor group, helping to promote long lasting hydration. And Aloe, which we know soothes the skin. They say that inulin helps keep the skin nicely moisturized even when you wash it off your face. Combined with lecithin derived lipids to improve hydration. It's an extremely non drying moisturizing cleanser like you've never used before."

"You need half a pump, otherwise you are going to drown in the product. It spreads on so amazingly, spreads so much with the tiniest amount, and even that tiny amount foams up like crazy in this soft lather. It just feels like it's like cushioning your skin. It's the nicest cleanser I think I've ever used. You could use this as a first or second cleanse. This is also a cleanser you can take into the shower and use it on those drier bits of skin. In Winter, my shins, the back of my arms, for some reason get really dry, and this is a product you want to use. People overlook the cleanser stage as something to just get quickly done and over with, but this really puts the joy back into using a cleanser. Even though cleansers nowadays shouldn't be stripping your skin anyway, this really doesn't do it. This makes it feel like you've used a light moisturizer. It's that nourishing. I love it so, so much."

"I have been obsessed with Prequel. [...] The Prequel Cleanser has kind of become a bit of an icon amongst influencers and the skincare community because it is one of the most interesting cleansers I think that's been launched for a while. This contains 50% glycerin which is a huge amount and you can really see that in the kind of jellylike texture of this product. It's a lot softer and kind of fluidy, [...] but still has that thickness to it. And this gives a really nice soft foam that does feel like it's a moisturizer. [...] You foam up and then you just feel like you're rubbing in something so gentle and nourishing. We also have arginine, oat, and aloe so it's super soothing. It leaves your skin feeling untouched, even moisturized to a point. It's weird because I've never used a facial cleanser like this. There have been ones that have been similar but they don't quite leave you with that untouched feeling. I've [...] had this since it launched and there's so much left and I use it every single day, morning cleanse or evening cleanse or both. It's [...] just a cleanser I want to use and really look forward to using."

"This is a glycerin-based cleanser, so it's 50% glycerin. You only need like half a pump, and glycerin is excellent at drawing water to the skin surface and also preventing the other cleansing molecules from overly stripping the skin. It gives the cleanser this super cool texture. I literally designed this cleanser with my sensitive skin patients in mind, also with my patients who have mature skin or have eczema in mind, because I wanted it to be for people who maybe cleanse their face twice a day because they work out or they have to put a lot of creams or ointments on their skin because they have something like eczema. I wanted something that people could use and not feel like they were overdoing it. I feel like this cleanser really does that. I also think though that it was super important that this cleanser actually worked and like actually cleansed the skin, and to me it strikes that perfect balance. My skin feels amazing, like very clean but not tight or dry, which if you have sensitive skin you know this, sometimes after you wash your face you're like my face hurts and I need to get that moisturizer on right away. I don't really feel that when I use that cleanser."
Dermatologist's Favorite Body Skincare Products: Cleanser, Exfoliator, Sunscreen, & More!
"This is actually designed to be a face and body cleanser but I love it so much because it has so much glycerin in it that it really nourishes and protects the skin while it cleanses without feeling sticky or clinging to the skin. We designed this cleanser to be ultra hydrating for the skin but without leaving any type of residue behind. One of my biggest pet peeves with hydrating cleansers is when I can still feel them on my skin afterward and this one washes completely clean. We also had this cleanser clinically tested for its moisturizing capacity and it keeps the skin moisturized for 24 hours after use. I love how much this lathers up. I feel like sometimes people associate a foaming cleanser or a lathering cleanser with something that's stripping but in reality having a nice lather to me is just an amazing sensorial experience."

It is a small molecule that's highly water soluble, and it penetrates the skin very well. It makes it great for things like boosting skin cell turnover, brightening the appearance of dark spots, and doing things like smoothing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. "I'm using such a gentle cleanser, my Prequel cleanser, which is 50% glycerin, it's just a very non-stripping, hydrating cleanser. I find it's a good balance of setting my skin up for success, getting that refresh in the morning, but not making my skin feel dry or tight."
Don't Do Microneedling Until You Watch This - Dermatologist Guide | Dr. Sam Ellis
"When you're doing that first night of skin care after microneedling, I want you to use a really gentle cleanser. I often recommend my Prequel cleanser."
Yay
"This cleanser is based with glycerin and I absolutely love it. I personally use this as a second cleanse because I prefer to use a first cleanse either a balm or an oil cleanser to break up that sunscreen and get rid of all that makeup, so for me this is the perfect second cleanse. It is huge and really affordable. It's a nice gentle cleanser great for all skin types. You can use this head to toe, you can use this on your body, you can use it on your face, so all around a fantastic cleanser."

"They have a high percentage of glycerin in this cleanser which is supposed to be hydrating. Now I actually found this and I got a couple comments from you guys too that it was a little bit too stripping for very very dry skin. For reference I have very very dry skin, not just dry skin. I don't think I have an oil or sebaceous gland in my face so I'm kind of an outlier on this product. Most people love this and it works beautifully. I actually switched it to a body wash."
