What the gurus are saying

Controlling burn depth to avoid scarring is the core concern dermatologists flag, since the plasma pen offers no reliable way to stop the energy once it penetrates the skin. Beyond that, the lack of training standards means untrained people are performing the procedure on themselves and others, which adds real safety risk. One dermatologist noted the device does coagulate tissue and stop bleeding, but stressed that any mole removed this way must be sent for pathology testing to rule out skin cancer, and emphasized this is not a procedure to attempt at home.

"They're using a plasma pen. Now this is not my favorite way to remove a mole. Hopefully this person is numb. This can be done. Cosmetic results probably going to be pretty good. I just hope that they're sending that off for pathology because it's never a good idea to remove something and then throw it in the garbage."

"The plasma pen does coagulate as you cut through the skin it just takes a lot of passes to get there but there's no bleeding. This is not my favorite way to remove moles."

"The problem with the plasma pen is that number one there's no real way to prevent that burn from going too deep and creating scarring and number two there are people who are completely untrained who are doing this not only to themselves but to other people so please please please stay away from the plasma pen."
