  • Light texture that applies smoothly

What they flagged

  • Doesn't deliver instant results as advertised
  • Pasty texture may surprise those expecting pure skincare

What the gurus are saying

This primer-skincare hybrid divides reviewers on whether it delivers instant results. One expert praised it as a paste-like primer with genuine skincare benefits (niacinamide and caffeine for redness, zinc for oil control), saying it fills a gap between coverage and treatment. Another found the instant pore-smoothing claim unconvincing, while a third thought it competent but unremarkable next to other primers on the market. Those drawn to a tinted base that does double duty may find it worth trying, though the skincare perks wash away when you cleanse.

"It says instant benefit but I don't actually see the instant benefit of that at all. If anything my nose looks more porous than it was a minute ago. [...] There's no ingredients on this and I don't actually know where the box is but there's not like it doesn't say silicone or dimethicone, there's no ingredients on the actual product itself. [...] It's just really not going to [...] do anything, there's no instant result. It smells funny, the smell is quite strong."

"When I first tried this I really hated it because I was expecting skincare and I got a pasty primer, but then when I look at this as a blend between skincare and makeup I'm like oh my gosh this is the pasty primer with skincare benefits that I've been looking for. It's basically a newer and better version of that discontinued Smashbox primer because it has skincare ingredients."

"It's okay, but it's not my favorite primer. I'm kind of picky about primers. I think Bare Minerals is one of my favorite primers that I actually love. This one is tinted and it's super light. It [...] goes on pretty quickly and is really light. I like it, but there are so many primer options out there and it probably wasn't my favorite one. I don't know if I'll get this one again. But if you're looking for a new primer, it's not bad. It's tinted, rubs in nice and smooth."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
