What the gurus are saying

This serum's gel texture and blend of ceramides set it apart from typical liquid hyaluronic acid formulas. Dermatologists and professionals use it after microneedling, praising the plumping finish and skin barrier support. The high price and beeswax content may not suit everyone, but the strong professional recommendation makes it a compelling choice for barrier recovery and plumping.

"The hyaluronic serum, I think sometimes people in the skincare community really poo poo hyaluronic acid serums a little too much when in reality you can get some great serums that are hydrating and plumping and nourishing for the skin and feels super light where they call out the main ingredient as hyaluronic acid but it turns out there are so many other ingredients like this."

"This is the serum that doctors and derms have used after medical microneedling. This is one of the best serums to use for a good skin barrier or post micro needling. It's just very expensive. Now I don't currently use it because it does have beeswax and that's not something I put on my face, but we use this all the time in clinic post microneedling treatments. This would fly off the shelves. Everyone literally loves this. And PCA Skin is a really good brand. It is one of the brands that's often sold in dermatology clinics kind of like SkinCeuticals because it's like it's expensive but it does actually work. And it's cruelty free which SkinCeuticals is not. It's even a better version of Obagi."

"This is the hyaluronic acid boosting serum, and I have to give it to PCA Skin. This stuff is actually really, really good. It is insanely expensive, but it does have hyaluronic acid as well as ceramides. It has no synthetic dyes or fragrances. It's not like a liquidy hyaluronic acid serum the way a lot of other ones are. It's actually more of like a moisturizer with a nice kind of gel consistency. After medical micro needling, you want the skin to go through an inflammatory phase, but a lot of people do get dry and itchy after micro needling. Once you make those channels in the skin, you do want them to heal up well. This is so nice because it's not just like a liquidy hyaluronic acid. It actually has glycerin and dimethicone. It actually soothes over the skin. And it has a yeast extract as well as jojoba, which you know that I love. And then it has these ceramides. So yes, it is hyaluronic acid, but it's also ceramides. And this is a really fantastic one. If you have the money, I would actually recommend purchasing this."

"This brings me to PCA Skin's Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum. I like hyaluronic acid for instances where I really want to plump up my skin and hide those fine lines and wrinkles, and it gives you a nice dewy, glassy skin finish. As soon as I apply this to my skin and let it set, my skin feels smoother and I get a nice glassy look. It has a blend of hyaluronic acid, the hyaluronic acid pro complex to support your natural hyaluronic acid levels, as well as ceramides and niacinamide to help repair the skin barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss, and it helps promote brighter, healthier skin."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
