What the gurus are saying

Gurus praise this as a standout ectoin product that hydrates effectively and may help defend against visible signs of aging, with particular enthusiasm from those with dehydrated skin who report less irritation and dryness. The consistent knock: the price is steep, though experts suggest watching for Paula's Choice sales to make it more accessible. One guru did rank a competing ectoin product slightly higher for texture and visible results.

"The Paula's Choice one is a favorite of mine but it comes with a high price point."

"Paula's Choice 7% Ectoin Booster may help your skin to defend against environmental aggressors, which ultimately do compromise barrier integrity. It's particularly suitable for people who have very sensitive, redness-prone skin or skin where the barrier is impaired, but also good for general moisturizing purposes. My all-time favorite ectoin product is Paula's Choice Ectoin Booster, which contains a whopping 7%. The Polish Choice product is significantly richer and much more emollient, much more occlusive in comparison to other ectoin products I've tried."

Dermatologist’s Skincare Must-Haves on Sale Right Now! (Black Friday 2025)
"Ectoin is an extremely light antioxidant and skin hydrator. It's a trendy ingredient, but I have to admit, I am finding it to be a great ingredient in moisturizing products, and it may help in defending against oxidative stress that contributes to some of the visible signs of skin aging. This far and away was my all-time favorite ectoin product. But oh my goodness, was it ever painful to buy this because it is so expensive at baseline. It's one of the most expensive products that I have bought, used, and wanted to rebuy over and over again and keep recommending, but it's like, dang, that price point is rough. So, look out for Paula's Choice sales. It's usually pretty good. I would definitely get it during the sale for sure."
Dermatologist Reacts to Your Skincare Questions | Azelaic Acid, Tech Neck, Sensitive Skin
"Ectoin is something that microorganisms make to help them survive in extreme conditions like really high salt, heat, ultraviolet radiation. When applied to our skin, it acts as a humectant and is also an antioxidant. It's a lot more lightweight than the Polish Choice one. It's more watery, but it is pretty emollient. It is just not as rich as the Polish Choice one. It doesn't have that glycerin in it and I'm thinking maybe that contributes to some of the richness of the Polish Choice. I do think it can aid in dry skin, mature skin, where you have somewhat of a delay, a slowing down of epidermal maturation leading to a buildup of dry, rough skin texture coupled with a decline in water retaining abilities of the stratum corneum and a thinning of the stratum corneum. The thing I like about this serum is that it also has urea, which is one of my favorite humectants because it is part of skin's natural moisturizing factors. It's typically pretty well tolerated and depending on the overall formulation, may even help to gently exfoliate the skin. I love the price point and I've continued to use it. I don't love it as much as the Polish Choice."
Neutrogena Invisible Gel Sunscreen SPF 40 Review | Zero White Cast
"This sunscreen layers pretty well under makeup. I did not encounter any issues with makeup products peeling up over the sunscreen, and it did not peel up over products, namely the Paula's Choice Ectoin serum, which yes, I have repurchased that. If a product doesn't peel over that, it's probably not going to peel over whatever you're using. So I love it in that regard. It's very easy to work with and does not conflict with other products. It achieves not only the makeup primer effect, but it's offering you broadspectrum sun protection."
Prequel Multi-Quench vs Paula’s Choice Ectoin: Best Hydrating Serum?
"As far as ectoine standpoint, the Paula's Choice one is good. I would have ranked it very highly, but I still would outrank Paula's Choice on this one. It's better. I see more of a noticeable change with that product, and it's just a richer, nicer, more emollient texture, too."
Dermatologist Skincare Empties: What I’d Actually Buy Again
"This is very emollient, very hydrating. You'll notice that many of the moisturizing serums, the milky toners that I gravitate to, they often have this slippery, hydrating, soothing texture. And I think that is a big factor in what led me to love this so much. Plus, it has the ectoin in there. So you're getting the benefits of that ingredient along with glycerin, which is hydrating. It's just so expensive. I don't know why it costs that much, honestly. Hopefully I can get it again on sale."

"This is Paula's Choice 7% Ectoin Booster. Love this stuff. This is amazing for long lasting hydration. If you are suffering with dehydration, ectoin is an amazing humectant ingredient. It doesn't just make your skin feel hydrated on application. It actually creates a network of hydration within the skin that creates longer lasting hydration throughout hours and hours and hours, like even 24 hours, 36 hours. The studies on ectoin for long lasting hydration are incredibly compelling. It's great for your skin barrier, but it's also very protective for your skin, too. It actually is a potent antioxidant and helps to protect from pollution. There's pollution everywhere, and all of these things in our environment can actually create a lot of damaging inflammation in our skin. That's what speeds up the aging process. So ectoin is protective, very hydrating and particularly special for dehydrated skin. I love it. It's got a milky texture, but it actually thins out and sinks into the skin really quickly."

November Faves | Dr. Reju-all, Paula's Choice, Cerave, Phlur
"Ectoin is fantastic for dehydrated skin. This product is good for dehydrated skin. My skin is dehydrated. And I love this product. It's getting cold and that definitely means drier environment inside, cold, windy, harsh weather outside. My skin is feeling dehydrated for sure, but also dried out as well. And so this is the time of year where my combo skin, especially the T-zone, starts to go really dry. And the irritation from the dehydration can really settle in if it's not balanced out properly. I'm actually waking up with a lot less of that because I've been working this into my skincare routine. 7% ectoine, which I've been obsessed with ectoin for over two years now, and it's really had a moment this year."

"This is the Paula's Choice 7% Ectoin Booster. And this has been a savior for me in November and now in December. It has definitely been fighting the winter induced dehydration. It got real cold and real snowy real quick here and my skin all of a sudden overnight was really starting to feel it. And so this is amazing because ectoin, you know, it provides some long-lasting moisture in my skin and it really helps to fight that dehydrated feeling. And I like this milky texture too because just that kiss of extra moisture really suits my skin."

"Ectoin acts like an antioxidant in that it forms this protective shield or barrier around the skin, protecting it from outside stressors. It's even called the stress protection molecule. But it also reduces moisture loss, keeps hydration in, and this is formulated with seven different forms of hyaluronic acid. This is definitely one of those serums that just make an immediate difference. From the moment I apply it, I can feel the way the skin is just so much smoother, soothed, and just really, really deeply hydrated. But also, it's got a nice kind of dewiness to it as well. That being said, this isn't one of those heavy, greasy formulas that just kind of sit heavily on your skin surface. It plumps everything out. This has been particularly good at dealing with any skin peeling and slight flakiness that I've been getting from using a higher concentration of tretinoin."

"This is the new Paula's Choice 7% Ectoin Booster. This just recently launched, so I haven't been using it for too long, but I have been using this a handful of times, and I've been testing this with different active ingredients just to see how they all pair up together. I have been using this quite a bit with copper peptides, and I've also been using it with other products. This formula already has Ectoin in it. I have paired them up together a couple of times and this pairing is really hydrating and plumping but also repairing to the skin barrier. If you are someone that deals with a compromised barrier a lot, whether it's tight, it's dry, it just feels like it needs some TLC, this would be a great addition to any skincare product that you have in your routine currently. There are no conflicts with this. You can honestly pair this up with anything because ectoin is an ingredient that will hydrate, but it also helps to strengthen and repair your skin barrier. And there's 7% ectoin in it."
