What the gurus are saying

This 4% isn't for active breakouts (the 2% is), but it's well-formulated with soothing ingredients like oat and green tea. If you have active hyperpigmentation or dark marks, skip it. Your barrier needs to stay calm to fade marks, and irritation will set you back. Those who've used the 2% for six months without irritation and plateaued on texture might try it at 2-3 times weekly, watching for dark marks or sensitivity.

"The 4% BHA is a well formulated product, I'm not saying it's not. Paula's Choice knows what they're doing, and the adenosine and glycerin additions show they thought about the irritation potential, that's actually smart formulating. But for melanin rich skin, the risk benefit calculation is different than it is for someone else. Do not touch the 4% if your main concern is active breakouts or acne, the 2% was specifically formulated for that and the 4% wasn't. If you currently have active hyperpigmentation or dark marks, please do not jump to a higher acid concentration, you need your barrier stable and calm to fade existing marks, irritation will set you back, not move you forward. The 4% might be worth considering only if you have sensitive or reactive skin and you've been using the 2% consistently for at least six months with zero irritation, you've genuinely plateaued on texture and congestion, and your concerns are about refinement and anti-aging rather than reactive breakouts, and even then you should ease in two or three times a week and watch for new sensitivity or dark marks."

"This one's worth checking out so it's got the 4% salicylic acid it also contains oat and then green tea both great for soothing so this one is really nice"

"I ran out of the Paula's Choice 4% BHA and I didn't really like the texture, and I don't get pimples that often."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
