What the gurus are saying

This cushion splits reviewers on texture and performance. Some found it heavy and dry with poor blendability, calling it unsuitable for any skin type; others praised its thin, buildable formula and all-day wear without settling into lines. The seaweed extract and manuka honey soothe skin. Those with dry or sensitive skin may find it more successful than people with oily skin. Some feedback here is sponsored.

"The Parnell serum cushion is actually pretty heavy when you tap it on, and combined with the puff it feels dry instantly. I don't recommend it for dry mature skin, this is for nobody, and for oily combo skin it doesn't give you that coverage either, it's a struggle to blend. Parnell did a good job making so many shades and the cushion itself is lightweight, but I don't think it's a good cushion."

"I think I absolutely love this Parnell brand. This cushion makes similar claims to their serum and toner, it's got seaweed extract and manuka honey in it, soothing and hydrating the skin while offering a buildable radiant finish. I absolutely love the texture of this, it's that higher coverage but thin formula that I feel like K beauty cushions do so well, not super high coverage, good coverage, kind of more medium buildable. I'm so excited to find this cushion because this brand has a big shade range, which is so important to me. This one feels like it's more for dry skin types, more for sensitive skin types, you might not like this finish if you have oily skin. I wore it a full day already and it wore so well, it didn't sink into lines and it didn't start to look cakey or drying."

"This is the Parnell Cicamanu Serum Cushion Foundation. One cushion foundation has a whole bottle of serum in this foundation. It is stunning. I wore this for the whole day and it looked so great on my skin all day. It's that semi-matte finish, so if you don't want to be over the top glowy, this is going to be a great one. They actually claim that this is the number one cushion foundation people use in South Korea. The benefits you get from the serum in the foundation is it reduces redness, it soothes the skin, it's nourishing. But even though it's a foundation with a lot of skin care benefits going on, I don't find that's noticeable in wear. It's that mid-matte, so you don't feel like you've just applied your skin care and you've just whacked a foundation on top. It's for all skin types, but I do think this is going to be better for those oilier skin people that really want a glow. I love the Parnell one because it adds hydration to my skin without being over hydrated, so where in those areas where I'm dehydrated, it's just enough."

STOP Believing These Foundation Lies!! | Foundation myths debunked
"Foundation isn't just for coverage. It's about evening out your skin tone, giving your face a more polished look and even adding extra benefits like hydration, like skincare that you can get in cushions like this one from Parnell. If your foundation looks cakey, it's often due to using too much product or not prepping your skin properly. The tools you use can be a big play in this also. This is why I like using either like the flat pads that come with cushion foundations like this or a powder brush, like a very flat, stubby powder brush. Because your fingers or the pressure is closer to the skin, you're almost pushing that product into the face, making it look like part of your skin."
AD Your Foundation Routine Needs An UPGRADE! | With Parnell serum cushion foundation!
"This is a foundation I've been testing on my skin on different days, different places, different time lengths. It is a wonderful foundation, and when I wear it, I feel like a grownup. Parnell is a Korean brand, and they have the number one cushion foundation at Olive Young in Korea. It's the best serum cushion foundation in Korea, full stop. I've been using Parnell for a while. I loved the cushion so much I was using it even though it didn't come in my shade, but recently they have taken their range from three shades to 30. What makes this cushion unique to all the other cushions out there is that this contains a unique ingredient called Cicamanu Biome, which calms dry and sensitive skin while providing a hydrating, soothing finish. And it really is. You can really feel that on the skin. I'm oily, I'm not overly greasy. I just have this beautiful glow."
ANOTHER CELEBRITY MAKEUP BRAND!? | Ranking new makeup releases
"We love Parnell. The Cicamanu Serum Cushion comes in 40 shades. I adore this cushion. I'm so happy they filled in the deeper end of the spectrum. This is such a great foundation to have in general. If you have drier skin or maybe more dehydrated skin, this cushion has a whole bottle of serum in it. So every time you're applying this foundation, you are hydrating. Even on my oily skin, I'm dehydrated in this area. Stunning. One of my absolute favorite cushion foundations. I love that these Korean brands have so much great technology, far more advanced than a lot of the stuff that gets released in the US, and they're coming in with these amazing technologies and how great they do their formulas and giving us the shades we need."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
