What the gurus are saying

Gurus agree oral minoxidil is highly effective for hair loss, particularly when topical versions haven't worked, and praise its low cost now that the patent has expired. The main draw is its systemic action delivers better results than applying it to the scalp. The catch: it lowers blood pressure (a potential bonus for some) and carries rare but serious risks like fluid around the heart, so medical supervision is essential before starting.

"Another thing that is really was a game changer for hair loss for me was minoxidil. I get this from my dermatologist. So they prescribe minoxidil. You can get minoxidil from any doctor. It's basically the same thing that we used to do topically. I got this in South Korea. It's a roller of minoxidil so you can better roll it on the scalp instead of getting the hair all wet."

"If you've been putting minoxidil topically on your head for a long time, you realize it's way more beneficial when you take it orally. The patent from minoxidil ran out so you get a bottle of oral minoxidil that works better on your hair. The only side effect is it lowers your blood pressure, which a lot of us could use. It helps in terms of if you're on blood pressure medication you might not need to take that anymore if you're taking oral minoxidil. And because the patent ran out, it's $10. It's super super effective."

"A very rare but dangerous side effect is a pericardial effusion, which is fluid collection around the heart. And that is a more serious side effect obviously which would be a contraindication for you to ever take this medication. As with anything you should talk to your doctor to see if you are a good candidate for this medication. And if you're really struggling with hair loss and topicals don't quite seem to cut it, then oral minoxidil might be your next step. It does work very well. It's very effective, but again, side effects."
